It's all Political

Em's in the state capitol this weekend for Youth and Government, which is an event to have kids sit in place of our legislators and go through the process of passing bills into law.  It's a year long process to get them there and this weekend is the culmination of their work on their bill.

It was disappointing to get the call late last night to hear that Em's bill was scheduled last--so her chance to address the Senate will be slim to none.

"It's all about who's friends with who," she says sadly, "not who has a bill that is actually worth anything of merit."  I can hear how frustrated she is with the process.   She continues, "If you have a bill about unicorns or butterflies....it's a winner.  These people are idiots."  Sigh.

Welcome to politics, Em.  It's not always what is best or good...it's about feeling good, being politically correct, and supporting your buddies most of the time.  And it involves lots of wind and hot air--along with some back-patting and schmoozing.   We, Kautz gals aren't so good at accepting that sorta stuff.  Like mother, like daughter.

***Hey, don't forget the big giant GIVE-AWAY that I'm hosting!  Throw your name in on the drawing and see what Tracy can offer you.  Got a wedding to go to this year?  How about a baby shower or graduation?  Tracy makes the BEST cards....seriously.  Go toss your name in the comments, you silly!

And thus Em, at a tender age, learns the reality of all politics.

Reality is harsh sometimes.

Yep, that is politics. Not good in any way. But guess she had to learn. Hope you all have a good week end.

Reality sucks...sometimes.

Oh that stinks that her bill is scheduled last. What was her bill any way. I'm assuming it had nothing to do with unicorns or butterflies

Yep, welcome to politics, Em! I remember when I had government in school, it was just all textbook stuff and extremely boring! This is a much better learning experience for her.

I was about Em's age when I made that same discovery. The capper was an interview with our US Representative. He graciously gave me a lot of time and we had an interesting talk. My eyes were open I set my goals on a career in technology and not politics.

I keep trying to tell you, a lot can be accomplished by a really pretty girl in a pair of hip-waders, and no, I AM NOT GOING TO LET IT GO!

I have to say, I'm still impressed that she's able to go to the capitol and walk through the process in general. The reality is never quite up to snuff (it rarely is) but maybe she'll become the Leslie Knope of her generation.

(Love, love, love that show. If you haven't seen it yet, give it two or three episodes to get into the groove.)

Debbie--Yeah--there are windbags, showboaters and idiots galore. She finally did present her bill and we were there to see it. More on that tomorrow.

Vanilla--It's scary--we went to watch some of this and you can almost pick out the future politicians in the group. Some people were born for it. Blech.

Lisa--She ended up getting her bill presented, passed and made into "law." But, there was a LOT of frustration in the process.

Marg--I don't know how anyone goes into that profession.

Grace--She ended up presenting and finally getting her bill passed into law, so she was happy. But she learned the hard way what a ridiculous process it is.

Ann--Em wanted to lower the age of voter registration to 16. They would still vote at 18, but this would encourage kids in high school in register. After that time, it is harder to get people to register.

Karen--Yeah, I don't remember the process, but she does! I think the reality is much more interesting. We went to watch so I had a little refresher.

Chuck-For the life of me, I can't figure out why people would chose that as their profession. We are in the throws of a very nasty local mayoral battle and I cannot believe how folks behave in all of this. I just don't see how they "like" this stuff. yuck.

Fish--Well, she was a pretty girl in a snappy dress...AND she got her bill passed into law in the end. It's not all about waders, Fish.

CG--IN THE HOUSE!! Welcome back, pally! It's really interesting to see this whole process condensed into a weekend--but gees, is it crazy! You can spot the future politicians sitting there. Criminy, they are blowhards at an early age. (I don't know who Leslie is--what show is that?)

It's called Parks and Recreation and it's on NBC. I always forget to watch it on Thursday nights, so I watch the most recent episode on Hulu.

Anyway, Leslie Knopes (Amy Poehler) is a councilwoman in Pawnee, IN and she's super upbeat and optimistic about government and life in general. Of course she has some of the requisite wacky co-workers but they're all pretty funny and well-utilized in the show.

p.s. Thanks for the warm welcome back!

Welcome to the real world. My hubby ran for office, won a seat on the local council and did some good. When running for his third term the opposition called our house on a regular basis with death threats and shot out the windows of our house.

This was in a town of 1200 people in southern NJ. Over a stupid seat on a town council.

Politics is ridiculous and some people will do anything for what they perceive as "power." It's a shame she had to have her rose colored glasses broken so early in life.

CG--Ooooh, I'm gonna have to look that one up. Well, maybe after this election is over--we have local elections and it's getting NASTY and making my blood boil. FB should be shut down during local elections--I can't believe how petty it is all getting. I don't think my blood pressure could take it on TV too. Unless it's funny. Is it funny?

Patty--Oh my GOSH! We are going through something similar here in Weirdville. We have mayoral elections and it is getting really ugly. I finally had to quit the various village FB pages because it has turn vicious. I go back every now and then...and find MY name on there! :O I'm like "WHAT???!" and then my blood boils and I have to shut the computer off. Ugh. I think we are not far from gun shots and attempted murders. Scary how it drives folks, eh?

Oh yeah, it's funny. You'll get a kick out of it.
