Small Town Politics

While I tell you that I live in Chicago, we more specifically live in a suburb of Chicago--a small suburb.  A suburb that is run by some crooked folks....who are looking to get their crooked friends elected as mayor in April.  And while I am typically a non-political person, local politics have a direct impact on me, so I'm getting more interested and involved than I care to.

There are typically two parties involved in elections and each has their pros and cons.  I have tried to stay open-minded on this whole affair--until the phone calls started.

Seems Candidate A has decided to spend a lot of dough on automated phone calls. Phone calls that call and call and call--always during the evening hours and dinnertime when I don't want phone calls.  And they are automated phone calls which are even more annoying.  Plus, if you have caller I.D. and let them go unanswered, they call you again 3 or 4 times the next day. This goes on and on until you finally snap and call the number that dialed you and request that your number be taken off their list.

Then they ignore your request.  And they call you again the next day.  And the next. And even the day after that.

I may rip the phone out of the wall by the time April comes around. And yes, we still have a house phone--solely because I don't want this sorta stuff on my cell. Can you imagine?

Is this the new "water torture" of elections now?  Criminy.

Now that is annoying. I'd go crazy!
Luckily that type of thing is against the law here (for once it's a good thing)
Our small town is run by a group of octogenarians who will just not budge out of their seats. The next generation of candidates is hoping for them to pass away!

I would be so irritated. I hate phone calls.

Oh I hate those calls. It just isn't right. Don't blame you for being just a little annoyed, well maybe a lot annoyed. Take care.

I think it's legal for political callers to NOT take you off their calling list. Funny how someone made that legal.

I understand your pain and WHY do they have to call during the dinner hour when they must know that it only serves to piss people off?

Crooked politicians in Illinois? I'm shocked!

Grace said...

They didn't do that in the last place I lived but around here - whee-ooh - it's SOP for everything including dogcatcher! And the Do Not Call List excludes political calls...what a surprise, eh?

Those people are either clueless, or they have to know that such calls are annoying. Given that, how is it that they think such calls will motivate you to vote for them? Ditzy, ditzy, dumb, dumb, dumb.

We have the same thing here! Since super storm sandy we are getting so many calls with information on storm recovery and FEMA. Great for those who need it but we don't. I have also been receiving calls for a breast cancer charity, last time I read about them on the Internet, they collected 3 million dollars. With that money, they paid for 3 mamagrophys. I just can't handle any charities any more, the money rarely reaches the people who need it!

I can't stand robocalls. I hope it stops before April. That would be a long time to keep calling.

A call to their political party's local office, with an assurance of not voting for any of their candidates if the robo-calls do not immediately stop, might have some impact. If it doesn't, then you'll have a better idea of just who you should vote for--even if it is for none of the above. Come to think of it, naming names with specific details in a blog article might prove most helpful to everyone in the community--especially if it is picked up by the Tribune or the Sun-Times. After all, if candidates cannot be trusted to take care of something small, they certainly should not be trusted to at least sincerely try to take care of the big problems while in office.

We didn't get any political calls this year so must not be on some list and I sure don't want to be on it. I don't see how annoying people will get anyone elected and one day they'll figure it out but not soon enough for you! :)

That happened out here with the senate election. I finally did call the office and told them that if they didn't stop I would vote for the other guy simply because I couldn't take the phone calls any longer. I didn't care about party, politics or anything else. If the calls didn't stop I was voting the other way.

The calls stopped.

My human cares a LOT about local politics. She always votes, but ESPECIALLY in the local elections. And she hates the robocalls too - but she only picks up the phone when she knows the number anyhow. Yes, we have a land line still, and it's mainly because we use it occasionally as a fax... and it is tax deductible since it is the office phone.

Rebecca Mecomber said...

I ditched my landline for this very reason. Why the heck should I pay $50/mo for a phone that is merely an authors for telemarketers??

You can get a "virtual" landline, via Skype. They give you a number and it's much, much cheaper. Mine is almost $20 every 3 months.

What is it with politicos? They pass a bill that is then enacted into law creating a Do Not Call list. In the process they exempt themselves from that law as they did in more than a few other cases. Aargh!

Do what we do. Turn the ringer and answering machine off. Anyone that I want to talk to will call my cell :)
Those election calls are very annoying

Shauni S said...

That would drive me insane. I have in the past worked for a campaign and yes I made calls.. but I am a person.. I spoke, I listened and then crossed off their names. I guess that could be annoying but at least it gave people the right to respond..

Bossy Betty said...

Yikes! Sorry I don't have a solution for you. I am sort of with Ann there in turning off the ringer!

I think you have to put your number on the do not call list. That's the only way they will stop.

Candy C. said...

"Crooked politicians in Illinois? I'm shocked!" This was my first thought too!! ROTFL!!
We got rid of our land line just to get rid of the robocalls. We get very few on the cell phones, the ones we do get are mostly from the cell phone company!! Grrrr...

Duni--I don't like politicians or politics anyway. I wish it just wouldn't get so ugly.

Lisa--Oh, it's horrible. And the guilty party is not accepting responsibility for the calls. I don't like this stuff.

Marg--I get especially mad when they don't stop after you have asked them to.

Diane--I have called and asked them to remove me from their list--to no avail. I guess I won't be voting for them.

Diana--I hate this town and this state for the politicians we have. Okay, so I know the rest of the world ain't so great, but it's really bad here.

Grace--The DNC list is a joke anyway. It doesn't work even if you constantly call to update.

Vanilla--IF you actually participate in their calls (by pressing #'s to answer the questions), they spew lies about their opponent. I can't imagine that they believe this works. Although there are some really naive and uneducated people who are falling for it.

Debbie--I'm done giving out my number for anything. Literally, I keep the house number so they don't reach my cell!

Anne--No kidding. It's annoying even with caller I.D. and the answering machine. I hate to turn it off, but I'm getting there.

Jerry--I've said too much already, and I don't want to risk anything with posting names. I've been vocal on FB pages and have actually posted a request to please have the calls stop. He deleted my comments on his FB page. He's a real winner. :(

Beaded Tail--They are waging an ugly campaign and will stop at nothing to spew nasty things about the opponent. I hadn't made up my mind until all of this started. Guess who I won't be voting for?

Patty--That is exactly what I did here, except I posted on his election FB page. He deleted my comments.

Sparkle--I keep the house phone so these fools don't find my cell number. It's a major pain in the pooper.

Rebecca--I may have to look into that. THanks for the suggestion.

Chuck--The DNC list doesn't work anyway, even if you routinely call to update. It's a joke.

Ann--We really only get sales calls here now anyway. I hate to ditch the number because I don't want everyone to have my cell #.

Shauni--Oh, these automated calls are so annoying! You can't even tell them to stop calling you!! ARRRRGGH!

Betty--My only concern with that is if someone really needs to get a hold of us--like my mom or Joe's parents/siblings. I keep my cell private so only Joe and the kids call me--which is nice. You can't win, you know?

Silver--All of my phones are on the DNC list--which is a huge joke--it doesn't work. I still get business calls and such even though I update it regularly. It's another government joke.

Candy--See, I just don't want them calling my cell. That's what I'm afraid of. It's a nightmare.

I absolutely hate those calls. And we only have cells now, so I get them wherever I am.
