I don't mind the frogs eating birds all that much, but it's when they catch one and don't finish it off that I have a problem.
I looked out on the pond today to find a floater--a birdie who was meant for dinner, but didn't quite go down as planned. Nuthin' like fishing out floating birdies to make your day. I saved it for Joe--I know how much he loves doing icky stuff. I'm nice like that sometimes.
I haven't quite figured out the frog situation yet--mostly I only see two frogs, but last night I saw four. This may not sound like a big deal to most folks, but frog count is big around this house. It's like a nightly announcement how many frogs we have at any given moment. I'm still curious as to what happened a few weeks ago with "the killing"--the mysterious death of one of the frogs.
A few years ago, I had two female frogs that were beastly. They were swell friends, but they chased off every other frog until it was just the two of them. Then, when spring came, the two hopped off in search of boys....food...or death...whichever came first.
I'm still trying to determine if that is what I have going again--two tough gals dominating the pond. It's hard to sex frogs--IF they stay above water long enough to get a good look at them, it is still very difficult to see if that eardrum is large or small. For some reason, the frogs don't like me staring at them. Sheesh.
Year after year, I wait for grandbabies. In all my years of having the pond, we have never been blessed with eggs....or tadpoles. The fish go nuts--we've had generations of fish, but never frogs. I wonder what is with that? I always think this may be the year.
The pond never ceases to amaze me.

Frogs eat birds??? This I did not know Lin. Well... what disturbing things you don't learn in blogland... ;)
Happy Thursday!
xo Catherine
I am thinking some intensive therapy is in order for the frogs. Get a professional in there, quick!
Hmn...I'm also surprised to hear that frogs eat birds...I thought they stuck to bugs. Yuk. Thought about you today- I went walking in a park here with a large duck pond. I was fortunate enough to a have a few quiet moments where no one else was around to observe a few squabbles, and general going ons. I totally get the appeal ( I mean, I always have) but, don't think I've ever been alone around one before. It was so nice.
Perhaps the frogs are having a party and just forgot to invite you?
I really did not know frogs eat birds; really? that's gross...I think I was better off not knowing...
A carnivore is a carnivore....
Yeah, a floating bird would have pretty much ruined my day too. Yuck!
I didn't know frogs ate birds. EWWWWW.
Sounds like you had a "girls gone wild" frog edition thing going on there
Catherine--You must have missed my posts on this. It's creepy, but they eat what they can...including other frogs. Nature is not pretty. Even in the pond.
Betty--I wish I could figure them out, Betty! They are wacky, those frogs!
Nancy--It IS nice. It is by far the best improvement we have made to this house. Everyone is drawn to it when they come over. And I like to listen to it at night during the summer.
Tracy--Yep, they eat birds. But sometimes, the birds don't get caught the right way and the frog has to drop it. We've cleaned up a lot of non-swimming birdies in the past. It's not pretty.
Patty--You get it. While it is not pretty, we've come to accept the circle of life.
DJ--Yeah, it's not fun. What's worse is walking out to see a frog slowly swallowing a bird. You can see a birdie in this frog's mouth (look at photo)
Ann--Yep. Bullfrogs will eat birds, mice, snakes, other frogs, etc. I used to tell the kids not to get too close to the pond. :)
I can imagine a little Em drawing the food chain and she insists that frogs eat birds and not the other way round!! LOL!
I sure didn't know that frogs eat birds but then I have never paid any attention to the poor frogs. Sure hope you get those grandbabies or at least some tadpoles. Too funny.
As far as the older cat goes, I think it all depends on whether they get along with other cats. Most places will let you know if they do or not. Take care.
Frogs eat birds?!? I never knew that!
You asked about asparagus - you don't harvest it the first year. After 2 years it grows in bigger patches and you can start harvesting. So we'll hopefully enjoy ours next year.
Veronica--Hahaha! Yeah, we don't like that part of the food chain!
Marg--I dunno, I hear those tadpoles can take over. So maybe it is a good thing we don't get them. Thanks for the info on the cats.
Lisa--Yeah, it's kinda creepy/cool. We've come out many times to a frog with birdie legs sticking out of his mouth. It takes a long time going down. Blech.
