We need an intervention...

Oh, deer!
No, not for me and the pain meds.....

for Joe--he is addicted to.....of all things.......

jasmine rice.

Yeah, I know, it's ugly.  It's not easy to talk about either, let me tell you.  Try explaining that to your family and friends--it's embarrassing.

It all started with a vegan recipe book.  He took to the veggies and the tofu alright, but he was completely smitten with the suggested rice.  Raised on white rice, Joe stretched his culinary palate and dabbled in brown rice at one point--but nothing compared to the glory of jasmine rice. Once he tried it, he was hooked.

You gotta see him--all hunched over his plate, humming to himself as he shovels it in.  And after dinner is over, he spoons it out of the pot with the wooden spoon, "Survivor" style, and goes on and on about how much he loves the stuff. It's embarrassing and I don't even want Colin to see his dad like this when he comes home from college.

I dunno, it's good and all, but Joe is addicted.  Seriously addicted.  And being that he does the cooking around here, our meals all suddenly include jasmine rice.  Sigh.

The worse part? He starts asking family and friends if they have tried it too--like its normal conversation. It's an obsession of the weird kind.  Seriously, Em and  I have images of this man hanging outside of grocery stores begging for jasmine rice.  It's not a pretty thought.

"Hi, I'm Joe, and I'm addicted to jasmine rice..."

It's just weird.

I just see an Oliver twist thing going on only with a grown man begging.."Please Sir, can I have some more..jasmine rice?"LOL!

LOL, that is so funny. And ever funnier, I have never heard of Jasmine rice. Guess Joe will immediately send me a recipe. Or I will just google it. Hope he gets his fill of jasmine rice. Take care.

I can practically picture him as he's shoveling it in!

Don't tell him but I have to admit that he's on to something. That stuff is amazing!

I've never tried jasmine rice, but would if given the chance. Around here it's strictly brown rice, and I love that. Reckon can I get a plate of jasmine rice at the local Chinese/Thai restaurant? I'll have to check.

Unfamiliar with jasmine rice. But you, Lin, are addicted to setting people up for sleepless hours. Four a.m., singing (softly) "Something and Coco and Joe." Over and over and I had to get on D&W this morning to get the third character. *grrr*

giggle, tell him to be careful eating all that rice, he may become addict to malox next, LOL. Hugs!!

Jasmine rice is AMAZING!!! I used to hate rice until I got that stuff. It's all I will make.

Tell Joe he MUST try it in a rice cooker! Has he tried it in one yet?!? It is PHENOMENAL in a rice cooker! Let it cook a little drier than that ikky *regular* American rice and the Jasmine is so light and fluffy! Oh, and by the way, if Joe ever decides to stand outside a grocery store to beg for rice, a little bell really gets people's attention! And let him know that sometimes people THROW Jasmine rice -- FOR FREE-- after weddings. Bring a cup to catch them!!!

Melodie--Hahaha! I like that image! He is a scary man, that Joe.

Marg--I think it is just sold in the rice aisle of the grocery store. It's popular with the Asian crowd, that is how I heard of it. Be careful trying it, you may get addicted too!

Violet--It is, but I'm not telling him that!

Chuck--You can buy it in your grocery stores too--it isn't that hard to find. This kind of rice is big with the Asian crowd. Be careful though...

Vanilla--Hahaha! That is FUNNY!! I can see you lying there singing "oh, de ole lady, ole lady i o...." Good to know I got you hooked. Now onto the jasmine rice....

Katherine--Hahaha! Yeah, I don't wanna know about that!

Rebecca--A Rice cooker, eh? Isn't that like buying a needle for the junkie??? I have thought about it though. Merry Christmas, Joe--a RICE COOKER!! :)

I love Jasmine rice - it is the ONLY kind I buy/cook/eat. If this is a new obsession I can tell you from experience he will get over it in about a year or so. That's how long it took me to start taking Jasmine rice for granted. The one PITA thing about it is - you HAVE to soak it first and since I cook on the fly - well, dinner is often late.

My husband loves handmade soaps - I mean he LOVES them - he will stand at the counter and sniff and sniff till he finds one he likes. Needless to say he is getting handmade soaps for Christmas - a soap store just opened in out neighborhood so I guess hubby will have a new hang-out (better there than at the cupcake bakery!)

Give him some basmati....it's even better

Then we should hook him up with my bf. See...I didn't find this post weird because M. is also totally obsessed with jasmine rice. He went so far as to buy a japanese rice maker for us. It's nice, but now we have a rice maker...and we're American. When I give him a choice about dinner he'll say, "Oh, just put on some rice and make some kind of meat." Very odd, yes. I love it too, but to be honest, don't want to eat it 3 times a week!

Okay, now I am going to have to try jasmine rice to see what this is all about!

You totally made that up. There is no such thing as jasmine rice. Jasmine is a perfume and a soap. Not a rice. Geesh. What drugs are you on anyway?

I have never even heard of jasmine rice. I got a good chuckle though picturing Joe hunched over his dish of it

My Mommeh loves the rice that comes in the Chipotle burritos!

LOL! We LOVE Jasmine rice here, too. In fact, it's the only rice I buy typically. I'm not a fan of brown rice, but I will tolerate it. Sorry he's quite addicted though...we aren't that bad. LOL! Hope you're healing well friend!

Dear Joe,
I have never had jasmine rice and don't even know what the hell it is! Think I will Google that.

Grace--Joe starts it before anything else he is cooking for dinner. He says it takes a half hour from start to finish--I wonder if the rice cooker would be faster? That is weird that your husband likes handmade soaps so much. At least he is easy to buy for!

Pricilla--Really? We'll have to try that too.

Nancy--Pretty much that is what Joe does--he makes rice....and then some meat, usually chicken. We eat it a lot--but I like it too.

Beaded Tail--Joe gets in the Asian section of the grocery store--it's not hard to find. He LOVES that stuff!

Kathy--No, really. It's huge with the Asian crowd (they eat it at work). Go check it out in the Asian part of your grocery store and get some. Joe says you will never look back.

Fran's Dad--Hmmmm...never had that. Joe is gonna be a rice connoisseur by the time we are done!

Ann--I like it too, but I'm a little less dramatic about it. Go get some and see if you like it too.

Daisy--I wonder if that is jasmine rice????

Sherrie--I'm doing well--I think it is all that rice I'm eating. Hahaha! Isn't it funny how many people eat that stuff and don't talk about it? Joe is opening doors on jasmine rice.

Jodi--Really?! It's in the Asian aisle at the grocery store. I know it because all the Chinese ladies at work eat it. Go try it--I think you will like it.

Ah, the jasmine rice I buy is from Trader Joe's and it has to be soaked first. There are other brands that you can buy in the grocery store that don't have to be soaked - they work more like "american" rice. I didn't care for them - if Joe gets a taste of the Trader Joe's jasmine rice y'all be eating it 7 days a week!

Sharkbytes (TM) said...

Did that reindeer get fat and yellow from eating jasmine rice?

Lin said...

Grace--Okay, I'll have to try that kind. I'll send him over to Trader Joe's to beg for jasmine rice!

Sharkey--Yeah, me and the reindeer!! :)

Grace said...

But remind him to read the instructions - You have to soak it first - a cup of rice cooks up in less than 20 minutes and you must remember the salt!
