Pin Free in 2012

You know you are pathetic when the one qualification for a rockin' New Year's Eve is that you get the pin out of your toe.  Sigh.  Yeah, sadly, that's me. But I am very excited to be taking FrankinToe into 2012 without stitches, pins, or surgical shoe.  I will be glad to welcome in 2012 with a straight toe and real shoes....on both feet.

I typically do a Dead List right about now to wrap up the past year (you know, a recap of all those we lost this year)--but I'm happy to report I don't have a list this year.  I think there was one escapee frog who spent a few days at the neighbor's pond, but even he got smart and came home.  Leaving = death for the most part--frogs don't get that.  So, anywho, we don't have a Dead List for 2011. I kinda like that. I hope 2012 continues the trend.

We took the family to see "War Horse" last night for a little fun family outing.  Criminy--that is one emotionally exhausting film. Wow.  While it was a good film, I wouldn't advise it if you are on anti-depressants. I guess I never thought about the horses they used in wars, and while this must have been a watered-down portrayal, it was hard to see what they endured.   Em looked at me numerous times in the movie and said "Nice, fun family movie, Mom."  Yeah, whatever. I didn't know.  I guess I owe them a trip to see the Muppet movie to make up for it.

So, what are you doing for New Year's Eve??  Me, I'm taking the tree down, packing up the train, and watching HAPPY movies.

I will be atoning for my sins in Atlantic City this past week and will continue to digest the enormous strip steak I had at Bobby Flay's. The best of the new year is already behind me. I am zipping up my Forever Lazy and digging in. Hope you party for me!

Happy New Year!

New Year's Eve? We'll probably watch a Judy Garland movie--most likely Meet me in St Louis. Then it's off to bed shortly after 10 PM.

Christmas decorations? They stay up through the 12 days of Christmas. That is through January 6, which is Epiphany or 3 Kings Day. That's something we started doing when we were heavily involved in the Hispanic community.

Though I can't dance, I am doing a happy tippety-tap for your toe!

Though the film may have been an emotional downer, I applaud you all for doing things "as a family" as my daughter says. Not enough of that left in this old world, imho.

I've wanted to see this movie! On my must see list. Looking forward to seeing the straightened toe pic. I propose this become your new blog site name. The STRAIGHTENED TOE has a nice ring to it don't ya think? Fran's Dad

I knew from the ads, that I didn't want to see that movie. It looked rough to me. Granted, the horses did have a hard life in the war, but I really don't want to hear about it. Like you, a happy movie is what I like. So I am glad you told us about it. We have a huge dead list here but that is why we are looking forward to 2012. Happy New Year.

I can't stand the commercials for that movie - I don't like movies with animals, or war movies or movies ...oh well there aren't a lot of movies I like and I truly haven't the patience for sitting in one place for 2 hours watching the same thing...

Happy for your pin-lessness; Dec 31st is just another Saturday here (except for the noise - there will be fireworks and guns and shit like that) and Jan. 1 is just another Sunday and just another start of a new month - nothing more, nothing less, nothing special...

Lin, you mind if I weigh in on War Horse? I saw it months ago in a sneak preview. I was a little let down. I know it is a children's book, turned Broadway (Tony winning) play...but I felt it lacked the greatness of Spielberg's ability to portray the realness of war. I wanted blood, and subtitles to read as actors spoke the language of the country war was being fought. I guess on the flip side Spielberg kept true to its children's book foundation. Still!

DG--Gees, it sounds like you are welcoming in that New Year days in advance! Good for you, DG! So glad you've returned! Hope you are back to blogging in 2012.

Chuck--I think I would keep the stuff up longer if I wasn't working. But now, time is a luxury and things have to come down and be put away while I have an extra day off--and the help at home. AND I'm tired of dusting snowmen. ;)

Vanilla--It's a good movie...on the scale of Sophie's Choice or Schindler's list. While it is good, it is just very emotionally draining. We all came home tired. It's hard to have such a heavy topic for entertainment.

Fran's Dad--See above comment. I think it is a good movie--but it is exhausting. Well, I thought so anyway. I like happy, light things for entertainment--I'm shallow like that. I can see this winning awards though. I like the new blog name suggestion, but imagine me explaining THAT one! Duck and Wheel is hard enough!

Diana--Nope. I've kept this boot subtle. It's not funny wearing these things anymore. :(

marg--It is rough. But it is a good movie--if you like Sophie's Choice or Schindler's list. That is the best way to describe it. You have LOTS of suffering with little happys sprinkled in. Still, it is very exhausting to have 2 1/2 hours of it. It is a lovely film and should win many awards, I'm thinking.

Grace--I can handle war movies, but to see it from an animal's perspective--I wasn't comfortable with that. They were never beaten and many, many people were kind, but it was hard to see what he went through. We were all spent at the end of the evening. I'm not a big New Year's gal--I like to welcome it in with my best friend--my pillow.

Jodi--This story is new to me so I didn't expect anything of the movie. I think this will do well with awards--it was lovely cinematography-wise. I just didn't expect it to be so hard to watch--we were all drained at the end of the movie. I think you need to see it, but think of movies like Sophie's Choice or Schindler's List--that is what you are getting, only with horses. I would not bring children--it is just waaayyy too depressing.

I won't be seeing that movie and probably can't even handle "We Bought a Zoo" with Matt Damon since I stay away from anything with animals in it. Glad you don't have a Dead List for 2011 and hope you won't have one for 2012 either!

You don't want to know what they did to horses during war....you REALLY don't want to know.

I'm a little nervous about seeing War Horse and now you made me really nervous. Not sure I can take it. Going to see the new Mission Impossible tonight instead. Yay, no dead list!

I spending Mew Years at home with wonderful friends. Have a very happy new year Lin!

Lin- I still say it was a very watered down portrayal of war and kids aged 9-12 are fine to see it. Exactly the age the book is geared too. I wouldn't even put Schindler's List and War Horse in the same category. Spielberg did a nice job I just wanted more authentic war scenes. But that's just me.

Happy Toe Dance! War Horse was GREAT, but, no, I wouldn't call it a light family fun movie.

I saw the pic of the tree and thought "pin free" meant no more tree needles all over the place. I took care of that problem the day after Xmas but am still finding needles. Yay for you for getting your toes back!

Our dead list went up today, my poor dog died this morning after a week in the ICU. We beat the cancer and he ended up having a complication from a medication and perforating his belly then becoming septic. How's that for over sharing? So we're having a pretty fucking shitty New Years but I'm sure things will look up next year.

Hope you guys are all (alive) and well.

Wow. I'm happy for the toe and uh, you. And thanks for the heads up about the movie. I think we'll do the Muppets now.... ;)

I have never been happier for a toe in my life.

I'm probably going to the Peep Drop tonight. They hold it around dinner time, not midnight. Then fireworks. Should be fun and I can still get to bed at my normal time of 9PM, because you know, I'm a hundred.

Happy Toe Year, Lin!

War Horse is intense--a tear-jerker for both of us but I laughed out loud at "We Bought a Zoo." Try that one!

Woo Hoo, Hooray for matching shoes. Good way to end one year and begin a new.
Me? I won't be doing much besides lounging on the couch. Most likely won't even be awake when the ball drops

Yay! Congrats on the extraction of all hardware! Hope you are enjoying your new toe! And somehow I knew to avoid that movie. I learned my lesson from reading Water for Elephants. Ugh.
