What Talent that Wee Toe Has!
Well, I went to the foot doctor for my surgical consult yesterday and it was very informative. It's sort of creepy what they have to do to straighten your toe, but nobody makes a big deal out of it--kind of reminds me of that darn chemical peel I just had done. (Warning, Will Robinson)
So, my doctor shows me on a boney foot skeleton what they are gonna do and he draws on paper to make it feel like a football play.
"Okay, we are gonna make an incision on the top of the toe--here." He is explaining. "Then we cut the bone off here and put a pin in there--here and here." And he draws a dark spot where my bone is no longer gonna be.
"Then we keep that pin sticking out of your foot for 2 weeks and you have to wear a surgical shoe..." Yeah...I've got one of those already. Good thing I saved mine, eh?
Then he drops the bomb on me, all nonchalantly. And as he did, I died a little death. And the world got a little less bright. My heart sunk and I wasn't so excited about my straight toe anymore.
You see, I am going to lose the middle bend of my toe during this process. Oh, I will be able to bend my toe at the bottom and very top joints, but that middle one will be straight forever. And while I will be able to point my toes for my ballerina career, I will be forced to accept the most terrible thing ever......
I will never be able to pinch anyone with my toes again.
There. I said it. This is the first step of acceptance they say.
While this may seem trivial to some, this is a big deal to me for this is my one and only talent. Like if I was ever in the Mrs. America Pageant, this would guarantee me a win for the talent portion. But after toe surgery, I will be forced to skip the talent portion and rely solely on my platform--which is bringing back cocktail hour--but that is a whole other story. I'm really bummin' about not being able to pinch with my toes--it's just so darn cool.
So, you are probably thinking "who the heck cares about that?", but think of Julie Andrews who had throat surgery and can no longer sing. What if Michelangelo had hand surgery and could no longer paint? Baryshnikov not dancing? See--it's awful when you think of it. An art form lost......forever.
And when I broke the news to my friend, Wendy, she just asked if I can't just do it with my other foot. Sheesh. NO. I am right-footed and that is the only foot I can do it with! This isn't easy, people. That is why it is a talent.
Emma and Joe were just about as thoughtful about my trauma--Em sang "Ding Dong the Pinch is Gone", which I did NOT find humorous. Joe just asked what was for supper. Sigh.
My talent will forever disappear in the near future and nobody cares. And when I'm dead, I can hear my family....
"Lin was great--to think she could pinch people with her toes........" It ranks right up there with "She could make a mean meatloaf". Sigh.
Even the doctor wasn't sympathetic. When I told him why I was horrified, he just looked at me with big eyes like I was nuts. He doesn't get it either. Sheesh.
I'm gonna get in all the toe-pinching I can before my surgery. I mean, it's my last chance, right? And I think my family should have to tolerate it because after a certain date, it's over. For good. Forever. And ever.

After the surgery, you can still touch them with your foot and they will know . . .
Em is a stitch.
Verif. word = quity
Well you had better get to pinching with those toes. You will just have to practice with some of the other toes or the other foot to do some first class pinching. Hobbes, we are sorry we missed your post in the sink. They do need to get you a larger sink. What is the matter with them. Take care.
I've heard of "double jointed" but, sheesh-- there's a unique talent lost to the world. But just think: you'll be able to walk in comfort again! Now there's a talent you can use.
This makes me want to create a long pinching toe bento!
Start practicing with the other foot! You'll be able to figure out the knack before the surgery...I have faith!
I'm trying to figure out how pinching someone with your toes works - completely baffled - can't picture how that would be done.
And seriously - is it really necessary to have metal pins put in your body? Is having a straight toe so important? They wanted to put metal rods and screws and crap in my back and I passed on the opportunity.
I went through this surgery with both of my MIL's feet and after recuperation her feet were marvelous.
Who knows...maybe that toe pinchin' thing is just one of your God given talents!!! heeehehehe!!!
I have no foot problems but yet I can pick up stuff and color with 'em. Talk about talent!
God bless ya and have a fantastic weekend sweetie!!!
Prayin' for ya and sendin' ya some big old healin' hugs!!! :o)
We want a video of this!!!!
I dunno, I think I'd keep a pinching toe over a straight one any day. And I'd use the money for surgery to take my unstraight toe with me to Hawaii! Just sayin!
Why go through all that to get it straightened and lose your talent? I'd just leave it crooked.
Chuck--Yeah. They'll just know. ;) I like that, Chuck.
Marg--I wonder if I will have a physical therapist and if she can help me regain my talent?? Oh, there is hope!
Vanilla--Yeah, the walking part is sorta good. This summer was BEASTLY with it hurting. I have to remember that.
Diana--Oh yeah! I wanna see the second toe all crooked-like too! You are hilarious!
Silverthoughts--I will have to convince the family to let me practice on them with the other foot. Somehow I don't think they are gonna cooperate. Some people just don't appreciate the arts.
Grace--I love that idea--I'm gonna VIDEO me pinching with my toes!!! The pin will come out after 2-3 weeks, Grace. This toe is very painful this way, otherwise I wouldn't do it. Believe me, after that face thing--I'm not risking more pain!
Nezzy--Oh, that is very encouraging. But I want to know: Could she still pinch with her toes when it was all said and done?? Go ahead, ask her. I'll wait..... :B I am jealous that you can color with your toes!!! WOW!
Mary Ann--And I think I shall make one. That is too funny! I'm sure Joe and Em thank you ahead of time for that one.
Beaded Tail--But I can't walk barefoot or in flat sandals/flip flops with this bendy toe. It just hurts too bad. That would not be cool in Hawaii. :( But I do appreciate the idea!
Karen--Well, if it didn't hurt to be crooked, I'd go along with that. Pain just seems to be my theme these days. :(
Think positive Lin. You may just possibly have such talented toes that they will be able to overcome their disability and once again resume pinching
I'm thinking of my college room mate who had talented toes like yours. Her nickname was Crabs 'cos her toe pinching really hurt and you should see her picking up stuff from the floor with her toes!!!
you know Lin the new straight toe could improve your aerodynamics when swimming to the point where your lap times will be so good that you could try out for the USA swim team .
Better post some pics of all the bruises you inflict with that pinch for documentation.
Ann--I hope so! I hope I get physical therapy to regain my talent!
Veronica--Ooooh, I like that nickname! :) I hope she isn't going to be in the Mrs. America contest with me because that would make me sad. Hee! Hee!
Paul--Ooooh, I wonder! Hey, maybe I will ask the doctor to make little webs between my toes so I can have an advantage!! :D
Sharkey--Oh, it's quick and doesn't leave a mark, Sharkey. But it hurts like the dickens--ask Joe!! Hahaha!
My Memaw taught me how to pinch with my toes. And my Gamazee taught me how to pick stuff up with my toes. I can totally relate.
Awwww....I will never have the opportunity to be pinched by yer tootsies. Ummm...not that I want to...or anything.
Lauren--I think we officially have a sisterhood. :)
Mee2--You are missing out. Em says it hurts like the dickens!! :D
