I'm not sure how it happened, but somebody volunteered me for Pit Crew at today's contest. I think it was me who offered to help whenever needed--but I didn't mean it. Sheesh.
Pit Crew is the gang of parents who wheel all of the band equipment onto the field before a performance. It is a crappy job because you can't see the performance from a height--you just see a crowd of marchers and colorguard from ground level. And you have to push marimbas and gongs and stuff--which are on wheels and have minds of their own. Sigh.
It is something that I have avoided for 6 years--until today.
The worst part is that our pit configuration changes with every performance so we have to go "practice" with the band at 8:45 a.m.--which is directly after Colorguard Breakfast at 6:30. I'm gonna need a nap before our 1:45 performance--which is highly unlikely.
Color me crabby.

Fran's Dad
I think it's cool that you get so involved. My parents never volunteered to do anything extra...and they barely came to any of the performances. Well, my dad came to the home football games-but only because he was working security and got paid! ;)
Mike--I opened that video while my kitchen was full of colorguard chatter and laughter--I couldn't finish the song without my eyes welling up. Thanks for the reminder. :)
Silverthoughts--We all do the best we can at the moment and we can't second guess why they were or weren't there. I come from a long line of involved parents--my mom drove to every event, home and away, so I guess that is why I do the same thing. I don't know any different. And besides, I'm having a blast doing it. Make sure you change things by going to your kids events. You don't really realize how much it means to them until later on. :)
"I can help wherever needed." Oh, the bitter after-taste of those words.
Hope you had a great day. And may the judges find the Astro performance pleasing.
Bummer to miss the show - but nice to see it from a different perspective. You're a good Mom...
Well, at least you got away without doing it for 6 years! At least you'll get an up close and personal view of the performance!
You never say I can help wherever needed. That means you end up with whatever no one else wanted. You are a dedicated mom and I am impressed that you started at 6:30 this morning. Go team!
I hope you don't get marimbaed
I'm sorry you got roped into this, but I have to say that pit crew looks totally badass. Like they can crush beer cans on their foreheads. Gotta be a fun group to hang with, at any hour.
just remember Lin your in Mike George's world whatever he says that what you do regardless what any other parent says GOOD LUCK ASTROS have fun !!! your going to sleep great tonight
You just have to have something to crab about. You love doing anything for them!
Vanilla--Yeah, who knew that meant standing on a soggy football field at 8:45 a.m.??! We just got in at 9:00 p.m. after a long day of competition. We took second and won a few caption awards--drum major, colorguard, and music general effect. I'd say it was a good day. I think it was all my marimba pushing. :)
Grace--Yeah, the show looked great--from the back. Wish I could have seen the front--especially Em's solos. Ugh. Oh well, next time...
Beaded Tail--Yeah, it's definitely a different view, but it was fun. I have a lot of butt photos. Hahaha!
Anne--Yeah, thanks for telling me that NOW. Ugh. I was in good company today, so it wasn't too bad. But I did feel bad not seeing Em's solos. :(
Pricilla--I was good on the marimbas, but I was nearly run over by the gong. That darn thing has a mind of its own!
Kathy--You know, you are right. Pit crew is full of the fun people who help all the time. I was lucky to be a part of them today. :)
Paul--I knew you'd love the pit crew photo today. :) Gees, I miss that crowd--you guys were the BEST! We did well today--Second place with wins in drum major, colorguard, and music general effect. I think we were really close to winning.
Sharkey--I am soooo like Lucy Van Pelt, Sharkey, and everyone knows it. You are right--I do love doing it. It was a good day. :)
Sounds like it was totally worth it....congrats to the band and to you for putting time and effort into the kids and their abilities and talents.
Haha ~ hope you made it through your day!!

Ha Ha Ha - You're a "Band-Aid" that's we called 'em, but they weren't parents, they were 7th graders (tiny school, marching band was 8-12 grades)and the younger kids got to be with the band and go on all the trips and stuff.
Color me tired! 5 back to back weeks of marching band has caught up to me. We have house guests this weekend (friends of my hubby from college who came for homecoming) that I am mostly entertaining. I just want a nap!
it looks like the band in going to peak at the perfect time Lin i sure miss marching season it was a fun four years and would do it over again anytime .we got to get out to one of those remaining football games
Our Pastor does this for his kid's high school band too. He seems to like it.
Chocolate--Aw, you know how fun it all is. :) Good times.
Catherine--I'm POOPED! I'm still recovering.
Winnie--That's what our band parents were called in high school!! Hahaha! That's funny!!!
Diana--I'm working on 4 and I'm pooped too. I need a week to finish my yard work and catch up on my blog reading. Yikes. Marching Season is CRAZY, isn't it??! I can' wait for U of I though!! :B
Paul--Hey, Paul, c'mon and help any time! We have a cabillion things to move this season. It's crazy. We only have one more football game--Oct. 21. Hope to see you there!
Karen--Oh, it's addicting, Karen. It's so much fun to see all the talent of the kids and their bands. It's incredibly fun and such a positive experience. I'm lucky to be a part of it with my kids.
EEP...well, I guess you've done your turn, right? Next time someone else can step in maybe??? Congrats on the bands wins too:)
