And the Winner of "Guess the Blob" Contest is........

Do you know who sort of guessed the Mystery Blob in my photo yesterday?  I'll give you a hint:  She is the biggest SmartyPants EVER and she knows like everything about goats and turkeys and stuff. AND she has a farm. And some laughing ducks.

Melodie from Laughing Duck Farm!
(this is not really a photo of Melodie--she wears a bathing suit when she swims)

Maybe it's that Texas heat that fires up her thinkin' skills, but girlfriend figured out what this is:

She originally guessed that it was a praying mantis nest.  And then she guessed again saying it was bug poop or perhaps a bug egg sack.  While the poop was NOT a good guess, the bug egg sack is CORRECT!

This is a praying mantis egg case (or sack) known as an ootheca.  The female praying mantis creates this foamy stuff to surround her eggs for protection.  It  hardens after a bit and you can find them attached to stems of plants. Come spring, this bad boy will release a bunch of little baby praying mantids.  I've heard that these little buggars will eat their siblings to survive--which makes for a great story for your kids--you know, it messes with their wee heads a bit.

I was doing some gardening when I found two of these on our butterfly bush--which is very exciting in my book.  Of course, nobody in my family thinks this is as exciting as I do, but they all humor me and come running over to see it.  Well, except the cats--they don't find anything exciting.

It is small--about the size of a quarter or maybe a 50 cent piece and it is very light--like styrofoam.  It is vulnerable to wasps and so I may be cutting the branch and saving it in the shed for winter.  I'd love to see those little ones hatching come spring time. I'm like that about frogs and bugs and such--it's life and I feel the need to protect it. Once a mom.....you know.

Thanks for all the wacky guesses, pallies. You are definitely some creative guessers!

And if you think she's cute, wait until you see the babies!

Naturally - it's a tree (or something like), it's outside - Ergo - something bug related. Therefore - Ewww!

I don't care how wonderful preying mantis' are - they creep me out. Ok, all bugs creep me out, what can I tell ya...

Good for Melodie guessing the right thing. I'm not sure I am looking forward to seeing the baby praying mantis'. Will they just be teeny weeny of the mother? Or will they hatch as some larva first? Hmmm.....

When you are ready to post their photo ~ give us a big ol' warning if they aren't very cute first before we scroll down to the photo... ;o)

Hope you are having a Happy week Lin!

I am a little bit disappointed that it was not dog-vomit fungus (slime mold sounds even cooler!)

Well that is too cool! I was waiting all night to find out what that was!

Praying mantis are the only bugs I like

Never would have guessed that one! She is a cutie and the egg is much friendlier looking than the black widow eggs I keep smushing around my patio.

I wouldn't have guessed that's what it was either. Your yard is just bursting with life!

Put it in a screened bug house thingy, because the odds of you being around when they hatch is minimal. I've done this before and it works well. Fran's Dad

well so much for finding my brain.

Grace--These guys sort of creep me out too--gees, they stare you DOWN! They don't run away when they see you--they look you right in the eye! EEEK! That said, I thought it was cool to find their egg sack though.

Melodie--YOU ROCK!!! I will send you a baby or two as your prize. Hee! Hee!

Catherine--They are teeny tinies. I found a bunch this spring and it was really cool. I will give you a warning though, you big chicken!

Duni--Me too! I didn't know what the name of that thing was before this post. Ootheca. :D

Veronica Lee--That's 3 of us! Now you have to use that word somewhere today. That ought to be interesting!

Daisy--Aw, bummer. Well, maybe I can find some of that somewhere. Or I may just have to settle for cat vomit. We have LOTS of that here.

Hot Rocks--We used to buy them at the garden center and now I have my OWN! They actually sell these for pest control.

Pricilla--I like caterpillars too. Oh, and hummingbird moths. And ladybugs--but not the bitey kind. And walking sticks. I just don't like centipedes and spiders. BLECH!

Casey--Oh yeah. I do not like spiders. They are VERY icky!

Fran's Dad--GOOD IDEA! Thanks for the idea!!

Ann--Sorry, Ann. But I will keep looking for it.

I like the way a praying mantis can rotate it's head to look at you in back of it. We don't see them often here.

They are interesting but I have a hard time thinking that they are cute. I think it's the eyes or something. I totally learned something new.

Writer Lady--I don't remember seeing these when I was growing up, but we bought some of these egg cases a few years ago at the garden center. I'm thinking these are the result of that. They are cool, aren't they?!

Chocolate--Oh, those things will stare you down!! And they are SCARY! I think the babies are more "cute" because what babies aren't, right?

What a cool guessing game! Sad I missed it, but you know, I would never have gotten it. Although...it does make sense to think back on what you've been finding in your yard lately;)

Well, that just goes to show that you should never assume you know "everything." I've thought they went with the wooly bears since I was a kid.
