Skyping Fools

My favorite question is "How's Colin?"--you know, the kid at school.  Yeah, I dunno. I mean, he's a boy. Away at college. Having fun. Guess how much he calls home?  (cricket. cricket.)

Yeah, not so much. But that's okay, I make him Skype us once a week--it's mandatory. I need to know he is alive at least once a week. The rest of the week I just pretend he's studying for all those A's and working hard to pay for next semester's books.

I love Skype. There is nothing like seeing your kid to know if he is alright or not.  I tell all moms whose kids are going away to college to get Skype on their computer.  There is just something about being able to see your kid as well as talking to them. I think the picture is worth a cabillion words--especially when your kid is Colin, Man of Few Words.

While I'm all happy seeing Col's face and his dorm room decor in the background, I can only imagine what he sees at his end.  There is me, holding up one cat or the other to say "hi" to Col, Em in the background, flitting in and out of the picture.  Joe is typically next to me on a stool, yelling at the computer like an old man.  I'm not sure why he yells, but he does--like Colin can't hear him or something. We look like idiots.

Add to the visual, the ridiculous conversation--How are your classes? Are you working a lot of hours? How are your friends? What have you been doing? Do you have a roommate yet? Do you have a single for the semester?  You know--all those annoying "parent" questions that means we don't know what else to talk to him about--according to him.

Colin is like his dad--doesn't have a whole lot to say most days.  It's funny, with all this technology to help us all communicate on so many levels--Facebook, Skype, texting, land line phones, cell phones, email, etc.--we just don't have a whole lot to say each week.  Oh, we chit-chat, but it's pretty much over in 10 minutes.  And the rest of the time we just end up being silly on that darn webcam.

And it's great to see him roll his eyes at us from so very far away.  It's like he's home again.

You look amazing in the skype pic! I have skype but I always look weird on it, but at least I make sure to point the camera to a nice background ;-)

Duni--Hahaha! You don't like that background??? That's Joe "making lunches"--which means he's got the supplies out, but he's watching TV. No wonder it takes him FOREVER to make lunches each night!

Tell Joe to make Bento lunches! Better yet, I'll Skype him!

How do you enforce the weekly conversations?

I ask because my sister is also away at school and she NEVER calls home. It worries my parents, especially when she is suppose to call and she "forgets".

Fun picture!!

My husband's oldest brother and fam just moved to California (cross country from us) and our nieces and nephews are always texting us asking us to Skype. And most of the time is spent being silly in front of that darn camera!

Happy Wednesday!

Maybe because we're all SO connected, we've exhausted our conversations via 12 places instead of over just one, like a phone? I dunno. I love that you have goofy conversations and that you can check in with him so often.

Also, is Hobbes sticking out his tongue or what? He's a character, just like you :)

If I could look as cute as Hobbes with his little tongue sticking out, I might just try Skype! For now I'm doing everyone a favor and staying off of it! :)

Hobbes looks a bit confuzzled

Wonder what my mom would think of us now-- she who got perhaps a dozen letters from her son during his college years. Phone? It is to laugh.

and how in the dickens did this comment wind up on the Nyad post?

Diana--He would probably like to make those silly things, Diana. It's ME who doesn't want shapes for lunch each day. :B

Silverthoughts--I threaten to disown him. And then I tell him how much I love him and worry about him away at school. You know, the combination of sweet and sour--that, and I have a good kid who still listens to me every once in awhile. Maybe you could call your sister and ask her to throw the p's a bone every now and then by giving them a call.

Chuck--Do you have Skype, Chuck? I could have Hobbes call up Midnight sometime. They might like that. Hahahaha!

Helene--You'd probably have better luck with Grace--she likes to sit on my lap while I'm on the computer. Hobbes--not so much. I think you can see I'm nearly strangling him to get this photo!

Jen--I love Skype. It's fun, isn't it? I like to do the wacky morphing thing with the camera. I get more laughs out of that thing.

Kathy--I think you are right--we are sooo accessible now, it isn't any fun to call once a week. Funny how he calls when he needs something....hmmmmmm. Everyone is a character in our house. :B

Beaded Tail--It's nice for keeping in touch with loved ones. I always feel like I look a mess on that camera. I hope that's not what I really look like!

Pricilla--He's mad. He does not like Skype, that Hobbes.

Daisy--Isn't he silly?! He does not like Skyping. Look at his face--he looks thrilled, doesn't he?! Hahaha!

Vanilla--That was weird how that comment showed up somewhere else. I think it was a ghost or something. EEEK! I love the two word texts I get or a blip on Facebook. Sigh. Well, at least I know he is alive!

Hahaha, that's great. You know he secretly loves it;)

I had no idea what skype was until last december. My daughter said something about it and I had no idea what she was talking about. I guess I'm way behind the times

Lin, You are always up to something. This post is a major chuckle!:)

Skype is indeed a wonderful thing. And I am thankful for the cell phone for when my son started driving. To always have that peace of mind that he had it in case of an emergency. Of course, no cell phone while driving thank you! :)

How can you look so great on skype? I look deformed on the screen which is why I don't skype.

Joe sounds a lot like my hubby! Men of few words!

The best part about it is being able to re-connect and see each other's faces. Skype is cool!

What a great photo! Hobbes looks like he is rolling his eyes at you, too! Lin, HOW do you DO it?! lol

Helene said...

Yeah I almost didn't think it was Hobbes with that look on his face

I totally agree with you, when Ben was going away I got him a laptop and webcam. He thought it was for him but it was really for me :)
