Esther Williams in Lane 2

I still swim a couple of days a week and I'm finding that while the temps are dropping outside, the pool gets emptier.  Either my senior swim pals are not digging being cold and wet or I'm just hitting the pool on Senior Outing days.

I found myself alone with two old guys in the pool the other day.  And while I pounded away at my mile swim, Ichabod Crane sloooowly paced Lane #4 and the male version of Esther Williams swam the sidestroke back and forth, back and forth in the lane next to me.  I wanted to tell him that he should switch sides as he's gonna be all bulked up on the right arm from all that sidestroke--but I didn't. I think he'll figure it out when his shirt doesn't fit........on one arm.

Oh, there are all sorts of funky swim strokes going on at that pool.  And while I try to mind my own breathing, I find myself cracking up at the silly swimming that is going on around me.  Things like the "butterback" where the legs are doing a breaststroke kick, while the person is on their back, flailing both arms at once to move forward. It's sort of like the butterfly--but on their back. I'm surprised they don't drown doing that.

There is a lot of Ester Williams-type swimming--you know, where your hair never gets wet.  There is the sidestroke, the breaststroke, and the noodling along as you hold the lane line marker.  But they look good--not a hair is wet.

Then there is the Jacques Cousteau group, where there is mostly underwater swimming.  And that doesn't bother me so much until the dude with the mask and snorkel does that--it sort of creeps me out wondering what he is looking at with that mask.  Any man I tell that to tells me that he's looking at one thing--so now I'm creeped out by that dude.  EEK.

I had a friend post on FB last night that his gym is all full of wacky Jersey Shore types.  He says they all stare at themselves in the mirror, flex, gel their hair, and parade around trying to impress everyone.  Well, I can say I definitely don't have that.  I guess I count myself lucky that all I have is my senior buddies--who continue to make me laugh.

And  make me feel young and in shape.

I started laughing as soon as I saw the title. I knew it wasn't about bowling.

I prefer to stay high and dry. No, wait . . . that doesn't make sense. I prefer to stay dry. Yes, that's better. :)

I love these post about the Senior swim days! It sounds like such great "people watching"! Too bad you can't sneak in a camera, and get some shots. I can only imagine what snorkel guy, and Esther Williams guy look like! Thanks for some giggles this morning!

You should wear a new suit with painted on erm, attributes to freak diver dude out.

I'm not even sure I'd put a suit on in front of the seniors. I threw all of mine away! But I have to say that the entertainment value at the pool seems to be off the charts. :)

I was just thinking about finding an indoor pool 'cause the kids love swimming and playing in the pool. The one in our complex closes so early in the year for us being in the South.

We provide a useful service; we make the not-quite-so old feel "young and in shape."

Hahah....for some reason it's always the pool where the crazies really come out. I've always wondered why exactly that they find this the place for them....

I think you are much luckier than your friend is. I would rather watch the senior buddies than the jersey shore group.

Helene--I'm just glad you know who Esther Williams is! :)

Chuck--Yeah, that's the downfall with swimming--you gotta get wet. Some days I don't like that part very much.

Hot Rocks--Oh, I would KILL for a camera. Do you think it would be any worse than that snorkel dude? I think not.

Pricilla--Hahaha! I like that idea! Someone told me to stuff a wig in the front of my suit to gross him out. :)

Violet--I have a racing (?) suit that isn't very sexy or anything. I would think I'm grossing them out in that thing so it doesn't bother me to wear it there. I crack up the entire time I'm swimming--it is soooo weird there!

Petula--That would be a great idea for your family! Watch out and try to avoid Senior Hour though.

Vanilla--Oh, and they make me laugh too. You forgot that part.

Nancy--Oh, good! So it's not just my pool that has all the crazies???

Ann--Me too. Everybody just makes me laugh. Just think "Cocoon"--it says it all.

peewee--Oh, he was this tall skinny thing, walking...walking....walking. All hunched over. I give everyone names--have you noticed?

Daisy--I'm gonna bring him to the pool with me. At least he will SWIM in the lane and he might just scare an old geezer outta there for me. :)

Di--Oh, it's hilarious going to that pool Di. I'm having a hard time swimming while laughing.

I was laughing so hard at the one arm being beefed up and then kept laughing so my mom asked me what was so dang funny. I told her about your swimming experiences and when I mentioned the snorkle and mask she asked if you swam at Sun City! I haven't laughed so hard in my life when I realized she swims with the same type of seniors you do and she's one of them! She doesn't wear a mask and snorkle but she knows of those who do. I asked her if she gets her hair wet though and she said "hell no"! She said that's why she doesn't let people under age 55 like you in their pool! Oh my god, my stomach hurts so bad from laughing! Thanks Lin!

I think I'd try to avoid the creepy guy. You're up to a mile! WOw... I hate the pool. My swimming will have to wait till spring to resume.

I think this is why I avoid public pools.

Catherine--Life is funny, Catherine. You just have to appreciate the wackiness around you! That I've got in boatloads. :)

Beaded Tail--I love that you mom doesn't get her hair wet!! That's hilarious! See?? I'm not making this stuff up! I'm glad it's not just me laughing at this wackiness.

Sharkey--I think the first day I did a mile too. I just start swimming and stop after a certain amount of time. Now I swim my mile and promise myself I can get out when I'm done. You should see how fast I do it!! I do a mile in 35 minutes!! I don't mind swimming as exercise for some reason.

Silverthoughts--Yeah, but I can't do laps in the backyard pond. :( You know, the frogs are fussy about stuff like that.
