The Dorkiness Continues....

You know what is worse than vacation photos? Vacation videos. Yep, enjoy:

It is a sad, yet hilarious fact that I square dance on vacation each year. And what's even more pathetic is that I'm damn proud of that too. I mean, how many of you can boast of being able to do a mean "Blue Moon of Kentucky" or a "Grand Square"?

Yeah, I thought so.

Each year, a group of us get together in the Daniel Boone National Forest to relax, breathe a bit, enjoy each others' company and knock back a few traditional line dances and some squares--along with some cocktails. And we pass these dances on to our young--as good parents should, so there will be generations of future dancers to enjoy the thrill of Appalachian entertainment of days gone by.

Don't be sniggering at me and Em hippity hoppin' round the 'ol pavilion floor--the Salty Dog Rag is beastly. I swear that one of these years, I'm gonna have a grabber on my 4th time around the ring. That second musical interlude gets me every year and I honestly don't think I'm gonna make it--but I do. And I don't bail like some of those folks are doing. (Busted, Joan and Pete.)

So, while the rest of the world is going exotic places on their vacations, know that I'm whoopin' it up, Appalachian-style in the hills of Kentucky each summer.

And no, I'm teachin' ya'll how to do it.

Why the hell did I visit your blog before bed? Now I think I will be haunted in my dreams. At least Joe & Colin weren't dancing!

*clapping* You and Em were great! I didn't see any square in that dancing! When the video started I thought the song was "Here Comes Santa Claus" so now I have that song in my head with a Salty Dog thrown in every now and then. I hope I don't hear that song in my dreams!

Hey where was Joe!? He didn't dance!?

Gosh, the last time I did square dancing was.... In 7th grade. I had no idea that adults did this willingly! Lol ;)

Seriously, I like dancing. My kids are ol' fuddy duds and won't do it, tho. It was great to see Em smiling! ... Or did you pay her to do it? Hmmmmmm

;) glad you had a good time. Very cool video!

Cute, I think it looks fun. Though I can't do the Salty Dog Rag - I think that's what he was saying I can do a 16 step!

Laughing out loud at Beaded tails comment. Here comes Santa claus. That looks like great fun to me and such a great thing to do. As Patti says, You go girl. We think it is great.

It's great to see this fun passed on to the next generation. I remember how much fun it was at Cumberland Falls and nice to see Emma carrying on the dancing. Phyl

I love it! Square dancing is not easy or simple; there are some very intricate moves. I learned to square dance in grammar school - gad, we sure had fun in the old days. I'm serious - gym classes included dancing - boys and girls together. Hell in 8th grade we learned to waltz - that's right in 1960 public schools were teaching 13 year olds to waltz - Elvis Presley notwithstanding.

Cool video. I loved it! (whoops I said that already)

Pricilla--It's a lot of fun to do--especially when you have a good square with people who know what they are doing.

Diana--Colin & Joe stay away from The Salty Dog Rag. It's exhausting to do and they know it. Sorry if I gave you nightmares. :)

Beaded Tail--Hahaha! I like the Salty Santa thought. :) This is a couples dance and is actually a really old dance dating back to early days of Appalachia.

Cute--It's fun too, but it is definitely a work out!

Catherine--Back in the day, when we were young and full of energy (and the dance pavilion was bigger), we'd fly around that ring. Now, I'm just a little slower. :)

Chuck--It is a workout to do The Salty Dog Rag. I'm not kidding when I say I swear that's how my life is gonna end--on that last instrumental. You think it is the end of the song....and it isn't. Ugh.

Rebecca--Joe doesn't have much rhythm so he sits this one out. He was filming for us this time. We have a friend who calls all these dances, so we have tons of fun doing this each year. It is a tradition and our kids love it as much as we do fortunately. I think your kids would like it too, under the right conditions. You know--where you don't have to be "cool".

Vanilla--Isn't that a happy song? And dance? You can't be sad and Salty Dog. :)

Katherine--You too, pally!

Winnie--It's actually an easy dance, but you gotta be in shape to last the whole song!

Marg--Most people chuckle when I tell them that we square dance. I guess I'm a dork--but a happy one.

Phyl--I put this up for you--I knew you'd get a kick out of seeing everyone again. That is Tom Ramsay and his daughter behind us. It's hilarious to see our kids doing this now.

Grace--Oh good--you watched it!! :) I do like the more difficult squares and it's a blast when you have people who know what they are doing in their square. I can drag Joe out there, but we need our friend Kim on the sidelines telling him what direction to go. It's pretty funny to watch.

Sharkey--Wouldn't that be fun??! Who's got a barn?

That looks like lots of fun! I would love to put on my sparkly dress and twirl around on the dance floor.

Wow...I'm actually impressed. That looks kinda hard! And I'm also impressed that Em is willing to be your partner no matter how goofy the activity:) What a great sport!
