You know it is going to be a wild summer when parrots show up in your backyard and you are on your second patio umbrella--and it is only June 4. Sigh.
Since when does non-tropical Chicago get wild parrots?? Apparently a lot. G'ma Phyl has them, but we have never seen them here--until this week. And homeboy isn't small by any means--they are bigger and louder than the biggest blackbird. Criminy. I thought I was seeing things when these two showed up.
On another note, I was standing in Target with Em when Col calls on the cell--"Uh, mom, can you pick up a new umbrella while you are out?" he says calmly.
"Yeah. Sure." I was thinking hand-held umbrella. Colin was apparently thinking big 9 foot patio umbrella. Ours snapped in half today for no good reason. Great. And I just bought this one 2 months ago. Swell.
So, it's either a good sign or a bad one that this is gonna be a wild summer. I mean, if tropical birds show up and you live where snow and cold dominates 6 months out of the year......
I think it all started to go downhill with the acquisition of Mr. Cuddles. Sigh. Buckle up and hold on, pallies, I think it's gonna be a good one. Or at the very least a very interesting one.

See "Harold Washington Monk Parakeets"
Since then, they have thrived and spread across Chicago in colonies. They have given phone and power companies fits with their huge weighty nest villages. If they happen to take up residence nearby, you might even live to regret their nasty obnoxious shriek. Fran's Dad
P'haps the parrots know what Algore knows.
Maybe they are lost pets?
I'm a Parrothead so its cool for me.
Stock up on Off! this weekend. I didn't last summer and by the time I went looking they were out and I was begging people in other states to send me some.
Maybe the weight of the parrot poop snapped the old umbrella! (my verification work is craperg)
They look pretty.
We had frost this morning.
June in Montana!
Let the wild rumpus begin!
and all I have to look forward to is the 20-somethings partying in a vacant lot 2 doors down from 4:30 in the afternoon to 2 in the morning - EVERY DAY plus the people behind us who spend the weekends cooking massive quantities of foul smelling food in their yard - big plastic tubs of food - I think perhaps their utilities have been turned off...I'd rather be dealing with escaped parrots and patio umbrellas - way more fun.
You know what I think? Your little plot pf land there in Weirdville is becoming a bird sanctuary. All the "non-burb" birds are visiting you!
You have more interesting things happen to you in a week than we have in a year. Never a dull moment in Weirdville!
Parrots? Where the heck do they spend the winters? In the steam tunnels?
do you ever have any dull moments around your parts? how cool to see parrots flying around
Do you think those birds escaped from somewhere? Strange.
Hope you are having a terrific weekend Lin!
xo Catherine
Wow..I would faint if I saw a pair of parrots here!
It already feels like August here.:(
What the hell? That is just strange, Lin. Sort of like the wild peacocks we have around these parts... took me awhile to get used to them.
Fran's Dad--Thanks for the hint--I did look it up and remembered I had heard about these guys before. I know how loud they are--my mom has them. Hope they don't stay here!!
Vanilla--They have somehow adjusted to the climate here. It sure is funny to see them though!
Helene--Nope. Look up "Harold Washington Park Monk parakeets"--it 'splains it all.
Diana--Hey, that's what I was saying when the umbrella broke! ;)
Pricilla--They are HUGE! I was really surprised to see them here. My mom has them all the time by her house a few miles away. Boy! Are they LOUD! Frost??? Ugh.
Betty--YEAH!!
Grace--Oh yeah. I think you need to be my neighbor, Grace. We have fun here.
Jodi--I think all of these wacky birds and animals come here to get on the blog.
Beaded Tail--No kidding!! Isn't that weird??
Sharkey--No, in big giant nests. Do a search on "Harold Washington Park parakeets".
Ann--Never dull. Ever. I'm thinking these things happen to other people, but they just don't pay any attention.
Catherine--Oh, Catherine, you never know who I'm gonna find in my yard. :P Do a search on "Harold Washington park parakeets"--it explains it all.
Jean--I was so surprised to see them on the line! And they are BIG too!!
Casey--Wow. You have wild peacocks?? Now THAT is big and LOUD!!
