After our vet visit earlier this year, Hobbes has sort of been on a diet--although we aren't really calling it that. It's more of a let's-just-put-out-a-little-less-food-and-hope-he-doesn't-notice-it kinda thing. But in actuality, spring hit and now he's outside and walking off the calories. Plus he has a lot less food in his dish.
So, Hobbes has lost a few pounds and looking good. His ottoman-shaped bod is a little more stream-lined and his sitting on me in the mornings doesn't make me gasp anymore. He's downright slim--hence the new name, Slim Orangey.
It hasn't been easy though, I'll have to admit. I have one kitty (Grace) that needs to up the calories and the wet food because she is aging, and another kitty that can't eat wet food each day. Sneaking treats and canned food to Grace has been....well....interesting. There is an awful lot of code-talking and giving the "high sign" to Grace--which thankfully she gets.
Nothing is ever simple here. Ever.

You and Grace have developed a secret code language? You never cease to amaze.
Yep. We have multiple dishes and multiple foods and its a military operation at feeding time. Our elderly "Kitty" had diabetes and special food ($50 a 10lb bag yeesh). Then there is the one I call Fancy Feast, the white one who has issues when he doesn't eat his special food. Then there is orange Pib who is just plain mean and can eat anything. Kitty however slimmed from his massive body. Now if I can only do the same. I have the ottoman middle :-(
If he ever finds out you're slipping food on the side to Grace, boy are you gonna get it! ;)
Aw yes.... kitty on a diet... I know it well. ;)
Happy Thursday!

My cat is an indoor cat, therefore fairly sedentary, so it is easy for indoor cats to start packing on the pounds. I try to give him his exercise by chasing him around the house, up and down the stairs. He thinks it is fun, but I know it is also good for him. Glad to hear that Hobbs is looking trim!
Have you seen my cat Mabel? I dread taking her to the vet where I learn I am an enabler. It's so hard denying her the food she loves so much. I can't even do that for myself!
Hobbes is looking good!
Good for you, Hobbes!
I'm surprised he didn't notice the reduced food in his bowl.
Sammy does ;-) We are trying very hard to get him to exercise more, but even when he's out on the terrace he doesn't do much. Oh well.
We had the diet problem when we had 3 cats - 2 were the perfect weight and one was rather chubby - we never could figure out a way to feed them...
Nothing is simple with cats.
Its always something isn't it? Hopefully he doesnt get so hungry that he takes to supplimenting from the back yard. sigh
Hobbes is looking very sleek and as handsome as ever! Angel and Isabella need to lose weight but I can't figure out how to do it without being up all night because of a hungry Angel. I did wean her off Temptations finally by substituting cat food - of course it has to be different than what's in their bowl so it's still a "treat" but at least it's grain free and not full of whatever is in that kitty crack called Temptations.
Haha! Go Slim (and you- A for effort). Wish that was happening in our house! Although...we do have the no food fat cat device to keep fatty out of lucy's foodhttp://nfallondesignstudio.blogspot.com/2009/04/no-food-fat-cat.html
Lookin' good, Hobbes!
Slim. *chuckle* That cat is huge, just huge. Good for you guys, keeping the diet. Wow.
I hear ya about nothing being easy. DOn't ask ME about MY diet. :-p
Hobbes doesn't look too slim to me! But it's good for him, so we celebrate. Cats and sign language. There's a book in there.
Just exactly what does a kitty high sign look like? And why doesn't Hobbes recognize it? Lol!
Lola's Diner
Hooray for Hobbes. Glad to hear that you and Grace can communicate. Although I think it's probably not that difficult for 2 females to pull something over on 1 male....lol
Haha, I hear ya, same here with the dogs (and kids). We have one lazy-assed dog who is almost a hundred pounds and needs to move a little and lose a few. The other dog is a high energy hound dog that burns it off instantly. Oh, and did I ever tell you my fucking DOGS are gluten free? They get sick every time they eat food or treats with wheat in it. WTF. Life just can't be easy, can it? How about I send you the fat dog in exchange for Grace and we'll feed the skinnies here in FL?
Vanilla--She gets it when I give her "the wave". I use it to call her when it is our time together--she likes anything that does not involve Hobbes. I don't know why. ;)
Helene--It's a major ordeal to do this with cats, isn't it? Sounds like you have it worse than me!
Violet--I wait until he goes outside in the morning and then Grace gets her wet food. He has NO idea! Mean, eh??
Catherine--It's bad enough with one cat, but TWO? And such different dietary needs. Ugh.
Hot Rocks--Hobbes was eating because he was bored inside. Now he is moving and hanging out in the yard--away from the food. He looks so much better. Try a laser pointer--Hobbes likes that and will play a long time with it.
Betty--I realized that I wasn't doing him any favors. He looks and feels so much better now. Tough love, Betty. Be STRONG!
Duni--Hobbes only notices when he's inside and bored. He eats out of boredom. When he is outside, he rarely comes in for food. It's hard, isn't it?
Grace--It's awful. It's fine now when Hobbes goes out--Grace hangs back because she knows she's gonna get her wet food. She and I are a team. :)
Pricilla--No kidding!
Tracy--No, he's busy sleeping under the hostas and such--with no interest in eating. I think he eats when he is bored--kinda like me!
Beaded Tail--I used a feeder with a timer. But it is hard to distinguish who is eating how much, so it gets hairy. I learned to give just one treat--the kitties don't really know how many they are getting. Try that. Good luck!
Nancy--That's what the vet suggested!! We didn't do that because I think I would feel really bad with him pawing at the box all day. If our plan didn't work--that was our next step. I'm glad it is summer and he can go out to work off the calories.
Daisy--Well, he certainly looks much better now! He is still a big kitty though!
Rebecca--Yeah, my diet isn't so hot either. :( Hobbes is a big boy and will never be thin. He was like a puppy--he had HUGE feet that we knew he would grow into.
Sharkey--He is, believe it or not. He actually has a shape now and it is not "ottoman". :)
Lola--I give Grace a little "c'mere" wave. She totally gets it. Isn't that funny? Hobbes is in a coma most of the time.
Ann--Grace watches me a lot and follows me around. Hobbes does not--he's off watching birds and stuff, so it is easy to ditch him. :)
Casey--How the heck do you get gluten free dogs???? Criminy. We did learn the hard way that Hobbes can't have wet food every day--he scoots his poopy butt on the rug. Ewwwww. It's gross. Yeah, no more wet food for you, Scooter. Uh, I say I send Hobbes to you. Oh, wait, I hate to think of the postage!
Oreo was 200 grams heavy when we first bought her. Now she weighs 670gm!! We are putting her on a diet though she looked so much cuter with her fat butt sticking out of her pigloo!
I only have an overweight dog. We have him on diet dog food (yes there is such a thing). He's losing weight, but it just kills me me when he wants more to eat. I'm a well padded person and I'm telling him he can't eat. It hurts.
But I do it because I love him. Your problem I don't think I could deal with.
Marilynne
Hobbes, we are glad you are losing a little weight. We know what it is like to try and feed different things to different cats. We have a bunch here that get all kinds of different food. Hope you have a great week end.
Plump or svelte, that's one good lookin hunka man cat.
Veronica--I can't imagine a guinea pig fat!
Marilynne--I fed Hobbes a little bit all day--he's much happier and a lot less hungry. I sneak Grace her food when he goes outside in the morning. It works somehow and he is looking good.
Marg--We are managing. Winter may be another story when he doesn't get outside to exercise, but that is another day....
DG--Second only to Spike the Hotness Monster!
