One of the many subjects that Jim and I used to touch on in our "morning meeting" was the subject of getting old. He and I would sit and laugh about things that go wrong with you as you age. Oh, we would cover the typical eyes going bad, the need for medications, and how your teeth just sort of break off in your mouth. But then there is the other fun stuff like aches and pains and mysterious ailments that give no warning.
"Perfectly good parts that worked yesterday, just don't work today," I'd tell him. And he would laugh, knowingly, while Irene just looked at us confused. She's young, you see, and she hasn't woken up stiff--from sleeping. Yeah, getting old isn't easy on the ol' bod.
This week, the top of my right food is swollen and painful--why? Who the hell knows? Joe ran through the litany of questions like a doctor would do: Did you drop something on it? Did you twist it? Did you step on something? Is that a bee sting? Asking a cabillion questions like he knows what is wrong with it. You know, like I'm stupid and I can't remember doing some serious damage to my foot that would cause it to swell up and hurt like the dickens. But I can't, for the life of me. My foot was fine on Friday--and Saturday it hurt. Plain and simple.
So, I hobble around and hope it doesn't get worse and fall off or something, while doing my usual chores like mowing the lawn, watering the gardens and bringing in the garbage cans. Sigh. There is no sympathy here for the wounded. But every so often, someone does say something sweet like "Hey, does your foot still hurt?!"-- I'm touched by the warmth of this family.
And then there was Joe, trying to sink a new post for the gate in the yard. He was whirling and twirling a crowbar, trying to maneuver the post into place when the crowbar flew into the air, did a double-twist back-flip, doopty-doo twirl and landed.....smack on the precise spot on my foot that is all hurty. And while they were all standing there, speechless and afraid to laugh, I just turned and hobbled into the house. Didn't say a damn word.
So, I wait--for the moment when my foot goes back to normal (or not) and the next perfectly good body part decides to act up for attention. And I'm not even that old.

Just wear a clown shoe and no one will notice the swelling!
OMG! It's Top of Right Foot Hurty Week! Mine hurts too! The big toe to be exact. My sneakers are fine, my shoes are fine. I don't know what caused the toe to get sore on me, but yes, it's annoying that stuff suddenly decides to not work as well. It's only then that I think of my age. Otherwise, I'm always 18.
(Laughing about the clown shoe. Good one, Diana!)
Yep, clown shoe it is! (trying to comment for the 5th time already!)
You should be extra careful! :)
Hope your foot feels better now. :)
I HATE BLOGGER. This is my fourth attempt at leaving a comment. I persist only because I love you, Lin. GAH BLOGGER!! *shakes fist*
OK OK... what I *tried* to say several times previously is that MY right foot on the top hurts this week, too!!! ??? WEIRD! No explanation. It's very sore where the big toe joint meets the top foot plate thingy or whatever. WEIRD. What's going on?
I frequently tell folks that growing old is not for sissies. I have had that tooth-break experience. Not fun! Sore feet too. Special shoes are coming soon.
Well, now you have a reason why your foot hurts! Gad, a crowbar to the foot - real ouchies there, babe. If the weather has been damp/humid then it's just some good old fashioned arthritis setting in - Welcome to the club!
The first time it struck me that my parts were falling apart was shortly after my 40th birthday. Things started going a different direction.
This morning I woke up with eyes mere slits from allergies, sore back, and stiff body parts due to working in the garden for the last 2 days.
Nope... these ol' parts sure aren't what they used to be...
Well... what can you do....
xo Catherine
Oh My God. Talk about adding insult to injury. Sheesh! You'd think they'd lay off the crow bar jobs until all is well. Guess not around there!
Sorry for your foot. I hope it gets better soon. Probably a stupid spider. I blame every mysterious swelling on spiders
I hope your foot gets better soon. Not to sound like someone's mother, but have you thought about seeing a doctor?
I had the broken tooth experience but I was in my 20s. Apparently Twizzlers don't agree with my teeth.
Oh, Lin! That crowbar...OUCH! I feel bad for you, pal. I hope everything starts to heal real soon...and stay away from crazy-crowbar-wielding men!
If a crowbar landed on my hurty foot the whole neighborhood would have known it! Hope you get plenty of sympathy for that one!
A Crowbar? OUCH!
I would sigh or shake my head or laugh, but I can't because I totally understand. All I can do is nod. I swear I thought I broke my tooth the other day 'cause I heard something crack as I was chewing. WTH, I thought! So are you seriously telling me I have to be careful with my tea as well. You should see the bruise on the palm of my hand. Yup, the palm! Craziness. ... I'm so proud of you for walking about when the stupid thing hit your hurt foot. I hope you're not limping to day. {snicker}
My Dad used to scold me I was "OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER" In 2011 ...and over the hill, this somehow takes on a whole new meaning. Fran's dad
Did a crowbar really land on it? Or is this truly a mystery? Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I'm only 38 and at my last appointment was given a diagnosis of "gout" which is basically for me pain-free but it causes other people huge amounts of pain, swelling and redness in the foot/big toe joint area. I have high uric acid levels. I take a pill for it every night, but I don't have the pain/red/swelling part. But you should get that checked out! It's a simple blood test.
Okay now at the end of the day I am gonna attempt to say what I tried to say this morning.
You know what will fix that ole' aching foot? A little acupuncture. hehehehe
OMG your poor hurtie foot. They were smart not to laugh, soooo not funny :)
As for the aches and pains and falling apart, I can really relate.
Diana--Oh, thank you for that wonderful suggestion! I will dig out my old pair that I have laying around for occasions such as these! :p
Kathy--Oh, I'm 18 too, but my body doesn't think so anymore. Sheesh. It's a shame one of hurty feet isn't a left one so we could share that pair of clown shoes. Hope you feel better, Kathy!
Helene--I don't think a clown shoe is appropriate for work, do you? I mean, they already think I'm an idiot...
Zach--I thought I was careful and now my foot just hurts for no reason! You'll know what it is when you get old, Zach. It's just really weird the stuff that happens to you.
Rebecca--How come everyone is having problems today??? I'm glad you persisted--thank you. :) What is with the hurty feet this week???
Hope you feel better--watch out for crowbars.
Chuck--Just don't get velcro shoes. They give your age away.
Grace--I think I did something that I don't remember doing. I was working in the yard all day on Friday--I'm sure that is the culprit.
Catherine--Mine was 45. I was good until then. Now I wake up to figure out which part is going haywire today. It's an adventure!!
Nancy--I guess I shouldn't have been watching them, right? Sigh. It was just really funny how far it flew to hit me. Even I had to laugh.
Pricilla--Joe thought it was a bug bite too, but I don't see any bite per se. I think I just pulled something. Well, I hope that is all that it is. I don't want to pay for a doctor to run a cabillion tests. Ugh.
Anne--I will if it lasts much longer. I think I pulled something. Doctors just want to run a cabillion tests these days and I don't have the time, the money, nor the inclination to deal with that. But I appreciate the mom thought. :)
Hot Rocks--It was so weird how far it flew to hit me! I'm surprised they didn't totally crack up over that. It's not getting worse, so maybe I'll get better soon.
Beaded Tail--Typically, I'm a huge curser, but I didn't for some reason on that one. I guess the boys were already crabby with their project and I didn't want to deal with that. I just went in instead. It's not any worse though....
A.Marie--Yep. And it hurt. A lot.
Petula--I can't walk across a room without getting a bruise now. What is with that???! It's just weird how parts just break down for no reason. Ugh.
Fran's Dad--Are we ever really old enough to know better? I don't think so. We may know, but we still do all those wacky things. :)
Lauren--I read about gout, but this is near the little toe and it isn't really red or unbearably painful. It's more of a pulled muscle or tendon. I will get it checked out if it lasts too much longer. Thanks for the suggestion--I thought of that too!
Jodi--Oh, criminy!! I don't think my acupuncture guy wants me to come back!
Ann--If they weren't so darn crabby with that fence, I think they might have laughed. And then stopped when they realized that I was gonna kill them. I love families. You can't even be hurt without them laughing. Ugh.
Ouch! That should be good for dinner out - or he should make you your favorite breakfast.
At least now you have an answer for why it hurts. Take it easy on that poor foot.
Marilynne--Nobody is discussing the incident. I think they are all afraid--very afraid--to bring it up.
It is an interesting process, and often with unexpected twists and turns (puns intended, you fill them in) whereby "perfectly good body parts" become seriously used and worn body parts. May your next forty years be filled with happy adventures, and no misadventures! Crowbar? Foot? Bad combo.
