It snowed here yesterday. Not at my house as much as up north, but still---it snowed. In April. And its spring.
I bought myself some pansies at the Walmart the other day and planted them in the pots by my front door. I love pansies and violas--those flowers have some kahunas. They are the first flowers to bloom after winter and the last to wilt in late fall. They dare the weather to beat them, and it rarely does. I like that about them.
I put away my winter coat on April 1 and have refused to put it on since. Okay, so I'm freaking freezing with the cold and snow, I just won't let go of spring no matter how much winter wants to stick around. And wearing that winter coat tells the world that I have not embraced spring. Or I'm an idiot. A cold idiot.
Whatever.
Me and the pansies--we are sticking together on this one. It's spring, damn it, and we are enjoying it in spite of the cold.

The pansies look a little cold. I think they want their coat.
Hang in there, Lady. Spring will come; and I agree, winter coats in April just look silly. And I admire pansies, too. Didn't get mine in this spring, but next-door neighbor did.
Oh my..we are hitting 90* today and you are getting snow...I dread 90* as much as you do the snow....
Yikes snow. Look at those pretty pansies just keeping on in the snow. Our Mom loves pansies too.In fact, now she has to go get some.
Sorry it is so cold up there but just think how much fun it will be when it gets warm again. Have a great day. Stay warm.
I am buying myself some icicle pansies this year. I think that will fit the weather we seem to be having!! :(
xo Catherine
I feel bad telling you on this side of the river I was wearing bare legs and sandals. Today, although we woke to wicked thunder storms, the temp is to reach 82*
I think that was my evil twin talking hehehe
Good for you! Does this mean I can call you a pansy now and you won't get mad? You both bloom where you are planted!
Your post title made me chuckle.
Pansies are so pretty, I agree. They are a little too subdued for me, though, I like the clamor of Blackeyed Susans and the color of Asian lilies. But they fade all too soon.
Here in NY, we call purple pansies Johnny Jumpups. Do you guys call them that?
Do they make plastic pansies? I haven't tracked down any nice plastic flowers yet - those are the only kind of flowers I can grow!
I don't own a winter coat - I don't go out in the winter!
Tell Melodie to send me her 90....
I love pansies too. But the goats would eat 'em.
Sigh.
We had it ALL yesterday; sun, wind, rain, snow, hail. You name it, we had it.
Its been so uniformly gray and drippy here that I found myself looking at the website of one of my childhood favorite places, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. I was feeling so desperate that I felt like I was on the interwebs hunting for Spring porn.
I am joining you sista! I may be freezing too...but the winter clothes are put away into the basement closet (haven't got the nerve to put shorts on yet)and I too am embracing Spring with 3 feet of snow outside my window! Woopee!!!!
PS..Love the Pansies...nice effect!
So I'm wondering why they are named pansies then! Eh, who wants more snow at this point? That's just miserable. So I'm with ya. Just stay inside and keep that coat put away!
I hope it gets warm soon (for both you and for me). We don't have snow, but it is definitely below 50 degrees. I guess I shouldn't complain.
You are really getting hit with a horrible spring there, aren't you? I heard it's the worst on record in a long, long time! :(
Way to stand tough Lin. We had a little snow yesterday afternoon but at least it didn't stick. Now it's just cold and gloomy. I'm a wimp though, I haven't put away my winter coat yet. I have however stopped wearing the long underwear. :)
Awww-I love pansies.
We're getting pelted with hail here; it's been around 90 degrees yesterday and today. Wanna move south?
And a funny: the word verification is alnewd. I'm not going to be going alnewd anytime soon, though, even if it is 90 degrees.
Pansies are such happy, sunny flowers. I think if I were not named Daisy I might be called a Pansy. Um, that did not come out exactly right...
It was just sleeting here a few minutes ago. I'm going to buy some pansies this year because they are really nice. We get lots of Johnny Jump Ups...I think that's the name...they grow wild at the back end of our garden. They look like mini pansies.
Highway--Criminy. Now you've got me putting coats on flowers?? They can be naked....like the goose.
Vanilla--I went and bought some because I couldn't stand it without them. The violas are coming up in the yard by themselves.
Melodie--Oh, I agree, it is too early for that hot!
Marg--I'm just waiting for some 70 degree weather again. I think we all are.
Catherine--I think you need spring more than me, pally!
Jodi--Really??! Color me envious.
Betty--I'm a pansy, dammit!! Hahaha! They are tough little flowers and how that term came about, I'll never know.
Rebecca--Yep! The violas are called that. I love them. :) They are such determined little flowers.
Grace--No, Grace, there are no plastic pansies. How about silk ones?? I wonder if they do silk pansies? I challenge you to find some on the internet, Grace!
Pricilla--We are getting that same weather. Ugh. It is tiresome, isn't it?
Shieldmaiden--I like that--Spring porn. Ahhh, the colors... the smells..... ;)
Hot Rocks--I will layer 'til the cows come home! There is NO way I am putting on a turtleneck or a winter coat! I'm glad I am not alone in this.
Nancy--Me too! They are so hardy, so why are they used as a wimpy term?? So NOT wimpy!
Anne--I'm just tired of the cold after we had a taste of warm. It just plays with us!
Violet--I don't know how bad it is, but I'm just ready for a bit of warm. 65 or 70 degrees would be nice. See? I'm reasonable.
Ann--I can't wear black, navy or brown anymore! I have a coral coat for spring and I'm wearing that bad boy proudly. Coldly, too.
Faith--Hahahaha! I like that...alnewd. I'm not going alnewd either. Don't want to scare the neighbors!
Daisy--I had a little kitty named Molly and I used to call her "Petunia" sometimes. It was her nickname when she was in the garden. And I think pansies get a bad rap--them is some tough flowers to have a wimpy connotation attached to them.
Mary Ann--Johnny Jump Ups are violas, which are like pansies, but smaller. Mine self-seed in the yard and are coming up on their own like yours are. :) They make me smile.
I Googled "silk pansies" - there are a squillion places to get them but I need them for outdoors. I know, I know there are "outdoor" silk flowers but they look kinda pathetic right quick. I'm looking for the outrageously fake - this neighborhood specializes in tacky :)
Grace--I know the 'hood--ours is pretty tacky too. So, did you find fake outside pansies in your search???
No - I haven't found truly tack plastic flowers yet - I'm gonna try Harriet Carter or some place like that - even the Dollar store doesn't have anything worthy!
Love the yellow- glad there's somewhere without snow!
