I looked out to see a dead robin laying on the sidewalk. Hmmmmm, it's not every day that you find a dead robin in your yard.
I inspected the window to see if he had flown into it. Nope. I looked to see if the hawk had hurt it. Nope. Then I looked at Hobbes--who looked away.
"Hobbes, did you eat this birdie?" I asked him like he was gonna answer me.
He looked down and poked some mulch. His indifference was suspect.
"Hobbes, did you see this birdie?" I re-word the question like a lawyer.
After being ignored each time I asked this question, I finally picked him up and showed him the bird. He sniffed it quickly and walked away. That was too quick--I was thinking that I had me a guilty cat.
So, Em and I had some fond words for our bird friend, thanked him for singing to us each morning and we gave him the traditional garbage bag funeral. Hobbes just ignored us both.
I'm thinking homeboy is guilty as sin, although he'll never tell. A cat never confesses.

I don't have to worry about who killed what in my yard, when the dog kills it she proudly brings to me saying "Look ma, look what I bagged!" to which I take it from her and give it its own baggy for the dumpster.
He is guilty but since he is a cat, he just feels it is his due. He left it on the sidewalk as a gift for you.
Eep. That's always so sad! I know it's just instinct, just what they do, but you kind of still hope that since they're not hungry cats and won't eat the bird that they'd just leave it be!
Oh dear...poor robin! Bad Hobbes!
Hobbes is more complex than we understand. His indifference merely disguised the incredible grief he was feeling.
I am all about Hobbes. I've got his back.
Good Hobbes! Protecting his family from that terrible, evil robin.
No guilt. Hobbes is just being a cat.
That picture is classic!
In defence of Hobbes, I don't quite believe that he makes gazelle-like leaps or cheetah-like bursts of speed. After all it's kinda hard to get all 47lbs of stripeyness into quick action. I may be wrong. Just saying.
BTW, it was so nice to meet you Lin and your lovely daughter Em the other day.
Anita's Mom
Fabulous photo!
Did you find any holes? It could have just died....
Hmmmmm, they usually don't leave it Lin. They usually carry it home. I'm thinking maybe not?
I found a huge pile of nothing but feathers the other morning out in the lawn. We have a Hobbes on the loose over here too!
Hobbes, at least you are not Denver the guilty dog! Have you seen his video?
By the looks of that picture, Hobbes has another victim in his sight.
blueyes--Ewwwww. I guess I'm glad I don't have it delivered.
Anne--Yeah/no. What is it with cats and giving us "gifts". Really?? Just letting me pet him every once in awhile would suffice.
Nancy--No kidding. I like to think that there was something wrong with the bird or he wouldn't have caught it. I never realized how big robins are until I had to "bag" that sucker.
Hot Rocks--I'm not sure it was him, but he was acting so weird....
Betty--Oh, Betty! Do people lick their chops when they are sad????
Chuck--One less singer every morning. Sniff.
Vanilla--He doesn't usually catch anyone intentionally, so I'm hoping it was an "accident". ;)
Anita's Mom--You'd be amazed at how "killer" that ottoman can be, Marie! ;) It was GREAT to meet you too! Finally!
Grace--He's a good model. :)
Pricilla--You know, he didn't have any damage to his body. But I don't recall ever seeing a bird have a heart attack and just die on the spot. I guess there is always a first, right?
Tracy--I gave him the benefit of the doubt because of what you and Pricilla said--it just doesn't add up. I hope not. We can't have him killing birdies.
Violet--Uh oh. We have a hawk in the neighborhood and he leaves such a mess! That said, he at least eats it after he catches it.
Daisy--I have--he is sooo funny! No, Hobbes didn't act like Denver.
Ann--I was on my belly trying to get that shot and he would NOT look me in the eye. Ugh. At least the photo turned out nice.
Didn't we just have this conversation? Or did someone else's cat catch a robin too?
Poor birdie! We think Hobbes was framed though! Love that photo of him too!
Sharky--I think I wrote about it in a comment on your blog. Sorry. No, you are not crazy--I just have few stories!! ;)
Beaded Tail--I have my doubts too, but it is more fun to blame him. I think Grace pointed to him when I asked about the bird.
Nor does the dog who ate a Cardinal in my yard. Tis' the season for a little "poultry".
I have indoor cats that just try to kill each other.
Missed Hobbes yesterday.
Boss came in having a fit just as I sat for lunch Wed. I gave up and went by my desk but I was furious. He takes out everything on me. He was angry at how our temp girl did stuff, angry you can't put pdf info into excel etc. By yesterday morning I was too exhausted to care about anything.
Well... a cat's got to do what a cat's got to do I think....
:)
Such a beautiful shot of Hobbes. Have I mentioned before that you take beautiful pics, pally!?
I'm thinking he's guilty as charged, too. ;)
Poor Hobbes, his mom jumping to conclusions without a fair trial!
