Woodpecker!

We have a small yard in the 'burbs, so there is a utility pole at either end of our property. Most days we don't even notice the conglomeration of wires that encompass our yard, even though they are perching roosts for all types of feathered friends. Yes, they are eyesores, but that is Weirdville--lots of city-living eyesores. It's the price you pay for living in the midst of suburbia.

Grace noticed the utility pole yesterday when a local woodpecker decided that he was gonna make a home out of that beast. Homeboy was drilling for the better part of the afternoon, taking breaks only to visit our suet feeder to fill his fuel tank for more tippy-tapping. It drove the cats NUTS.

And poor Grace spent some time looking like this--looking up like she was gonna scale that pole and make dinner out of that goofy bird.

The woodpecker didn't even notice her down there on the ground--he kept drilling away. Nor did he notice Hobbes who was licking his chops as he swooped down to the suet that was directly above above our Orange Stripey's head. Homeboy was workin' that pole--no time for silly cats.

Sigh.

This is major entertainment at our house--sad, isn't it? Two kitties drooling over some wacky bird pecking away at the utility pole and me, sitting there laughing at them. I'm thinking most other folks wouldn't even notice all of this fun going on.

Not sad at all. I would have found that very entertaining.

Heaps o' fun. Midnight goes nuts over juncos. When he sees them, he gets all kinds of twitchy.

Hilarious!!! Those two look so funny, just sitting there staring up at that bird!! LOL

I had to super enlarge the photo to see Grace - just sayin' And if you're a cat, hells bells that IS major entertainment! And if it weren't for my cats I wouldn't have any entertainment at all - they keep me smiling all day, every day!

When we first moved to the ultra-suburbs (aka Bum-Fark Egypt) I was working in my home office when I heard this tapping coming from the outside wall of the house. I stuck my head out the back door and a woodpecker was drilling away at the cedar shakes. I had to come all the way outside and bang on the wall to get him to fly away; at that point I could have reached up and grabbed him. He was persistent. And possibly a little deaf.

I've always liked bow ties on a man! Liked your guest post too!

Were they making that eheheheheh sound?

We had a woodpecker trying to get into the yurt the other day. Screeching and pecking away. Scared the cats...

I'll have to take some pictures of what a woodpecker has done to my black walnut tree. I just found it when I was raking up some leaves and was floored by the size of it.

When you have cats though, they kind slowly become your best source of entertainment though. They grow up, but they always default to their silly, childish, playful instincts.

I would have found that very entertaining. So Grace and Hobbes didn't try and climb that pole to get the woodpecker?

Your house is a Mecca of entertainment!

I'd be very entertained watching Hobbes and Grace watching the woodpecker! Cats are very fun to watch especially when birds are involved!

Super show, and all right there close by. Your neighbors don't know what they are missing.

Sounds entertaining o me. Last year we had a wood pecker pecking away at the windowsill of our upstairs bedroom. Not so entertaining, a bit annoying,..giggle. Hugs and happy spring!

Vanilla--I haven't seen Grace so engaged since I loaded Hobbes up into the crate to go to the vet!

Chuck--Oh, we had nuthatches too the other day. They are VERY exciting like the juncos.

A.Marie--Big excitement for kitties, A.Maire. BIG excitement.

Grace--Right you are. My kitties provide lots of fun too. :)

Shieldmaiden--Oh, I have heard about that! They can do a LOT of damage to your house. I've heard that you have to hang strips of tinfoil to scare them off.

Pricilla--Was he coming to visit or what???!

blueyes--Wow. I'd like to see that photo. This guy was flinging wood all over town--I'll have to get a closer look to see how far he got.

Nancy--My two are goofy, as I'm sure yours are too. Just give them a new toy or an empty box and you've got plenty of fun.

Ann--No, they didn't try to get him--that would take energy, Ann. And making a fool of themselves.

Katnip--Yeah, pathetic, aren't we??

Beaded Tail--They looked so silly just watching that bird. I sat there laughing at them. I'm thinking the neighbors were probably watching me watch the kitties....

Sharky--They are all in their houses. Thank goodness. :)

Katherine--I would imagine they can cause some damage! I don't think I would be laughing at that guy doing that to the windows. Ugh.

If you had a bug-zapper, I would think that we are related.

At least the cats are being amused! :)

Lin said...

Fish--No zapper, but I do have the pond. There is MAJOR entertainment going on in there.

Catherine--And me too. :) I was cracking up watching their heads going back and forth.

It's very entertaining to watch a cat thinking he's the bigtime jungle beast stalker. They really do take it all so seriously. That might be why it's so funny.

substitute two dogs for your two cats and THIS IS MY LIFE!

DG--I think you are right! She was so intent on that stupid squirrel!!

peewee--They are ALL nuts, aren't they? And I'm watching them. Ugh.
