I was thinking about spring break this morning--from the luxury of my bed, thank you very much. I took today off so that I could clean house and get things ready for Col to come home. I want to just chill with that boy when he comes home, so I do things like cleaning and ironing before he gets in. I hope he appreciates that someday.
While I laid there with my cat on my chest, it got me to thinking about what I call The Phases of Spring Break:
- When you are young, spring break is getting to stay at home for a week.
- When you are a teen, spring break is getting out of school for the week, and getting out of the house with your friends.
- College means getting out of dodge and going someplace warm for a week. And it is usually very far from home.
- When you are married and have small children, spring break is sort of gone--who the hell gets spring break as an adult?
- The kids get into school and you are like "Oh, criminy, the kids are gonna be home for a week!" (Although, I was one of those moms who liked the kids being home. Sick, I know.)
- Then you are glad when they are teens and they are getting out with their friends and you don't have to deal with eye rolls and teeth sucking for a week.
- When the kids are in college, you die a thousand deaths and worry about them if they go away for spring break....or.....
- You can't wait for them to come home to lay around, relax, and eat up all your food for that week.
Happy Weekend, pallies! May you take the time to enjoy the sun (if you can find it), trash-talk the time change, and breathe a bit.

Oh, my. I shudder to think what you have planned for day one of your reign if you can put this critical move off until day two.
Enjoy the week with the boy.
You've described it well. I never did one of those getaways far from home while I was in college.
Vanilla--I'll be workin' the crown and scepter that first day, pally! And checking out the digs. :)
Chuck--I did! Ft. Lauderdale one year--it was a TON of fun! But once was enough for me. :)
You do enjoy your children so much - and they seem to enjoy you - lucky family! (I don't know jack about Spring Break either - huge gaps in my pop culture knowledge)
Hey, you are already queen. Queen of the Duck and Wheel.
So rule on, rule on!
Enjoy your time.
No one every stops coming home.
I know what you mean about having your children home with laundry piling and the refrigerator empty. They still come home but it's never the same once they are married and out on their own. Still wonderful but different. I took your advice about getting out in the woods and it helped. Thanks.
It's hard to believe Spring Break is so close with all this snow still here! :(
And no time change in Saskatchewan ~ woot woot!!! :)
Happy Weekend Lin!

When they're home from college, it's the best thing in the world. THE BEST!
Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder. Fran's Dad
I am back up at the top of the list again. :-) I will be enjoying my week of staying at home. And when I become Queen I will be sure to get you a week off of work every week for life.
I'm in desperate need of spring break but no such luck for me.
If that isn't bad enough, then someone has to go and skim an hour off of my weekend.
Grace--Here's the scoop: You pile a bunch of you pals into the car and drive FOREVER to get somewhere warm. And then you join every other college kid from wherever and you cram into lame hotels for the week and party. Oh, and lay on the beach. I did it once---that was enough for me.
Pricilla--Yeah, but that title doesn't get me to far. Just ask my family.
Nancy--It's just different I think. The relationship is different. I like that he still needs me every now and then.
Mtn. Woman--I thought of you today--I moved some twigs and leaves aside in the garden and found new growth under all the muck! It was gloriously green and lovely. It's coming. IT IS!! I hope you feel better.
Catherine--Lucky you! The time change is nasty in the spring--we lose an hour. Ugh.
Violet--I can't wait. I really enjoyed Christmas break, so I hope this one is just as nice.
Fran's Dad--It does. :) Funny how we have to learn that the hard way.
Jodi--You are killing me. AND you get summers off. Sigh. Think of me getting up early, okay?
Ann--I need a week too. And I just want to sleep in more than anything. That time change KILLS me every year. ugh.
You are in the same phase with your kids as my brother is with his. He can see their time with him coming to a close, and he's trying to keep them close as much as possible.
Back when I went to school, we didn't get spring breaks. We did, however, get the opening day of deer season and the opening day of trout season (if March 1st came on a school day) off.
I am definitely in this phase:
The kids get into school and you are like "Oh, criminy, the kids are gonna be home for a week!"
Although my kids only get two days (Thurs/Fri) for winter break and then they get umpteen days for Easter -- last day is the Wed. before Easter and they go back a week after Easter.
p.s. I assumed Hobbes was the cat on your chest but then I wondered if you'd be able to breathe with the orange ottoman on you so then I wondered if it was Grace. Which one was it?
Last summer I got laid off on the 14th of June. And while finding a new job was a little stressful (but ultimately AWESOME) having the whole summer off (actually, I was off four months) was DELICIOUS...even better than when I was young and didn't now how to appreciate it. I slept in. I volunteered. I did my nails every other day. I think one needs a layoff every 20 years or so.
As Queen, what's on the agenda for Day 1?
Ratty--Although there are those days when it seems to never end, those kids grow up too fast. Like your brother, I'm clinging tightly!
Shane--OMG! How insane is that?! You certainly have more than your share of crud right now, pally. I hope it ends SOON!
Fish--Now they have fall break too! What is with that??!
CG--It was Hobbes--he's my morning man. We do a lot of cuddling in the morning. Did your kids lose any of those days due to snow days? They used to reduce ours for snow.
Shieldmaiden--Wouldn't that be glorious? Especially if you knew you were going back to work after the summer ended. I guess that's how teachers and school personnel feel, right JODI???! (Jodi is bragging about her upcoming week off somewhere in the comments. Sigh)
Rebecca--Oh, checking out the digs and trying out the crown and scepter, of course! I can't be expected to work right off the bat! Maybe I'll even have a parade where I can do that Queen Wave to everyone. :)
For how much I complain you'd think my kids need to earn those snow days back, but really they've only had three or four and I'm pretty sure there are no plans to make them up.
Oy, I need to concentrate on seeing the glass as half full more often.
