So, off we went to the new vet the other night with Hobbes in his giant carrier.
My little buddy did just fine, getting his shots and behaving himself while the vet and the office staff oohed and ahhed our Stripey Goodness. And the vet was gentle when she suggested that homeboy needs to shed a few pounds. Ugh. I guess I knew that was coming.
Things were all swell until I came home from work yesterday and found him all curled in ball, refusing to greet me. Crap.
Hobbes is sick again--like last year. And it just happens that it coincides with his vaccinations. So, off to the new vet we went...again. But this time, she didn't tell me that he had FIP or that he was going to die. She examined him, loaded him with fluids, gave him a shot of cortisone to reduce the inflammation and gave us lots of directions. She doesn't think he's in danger, but we need to watch him carefully. Apparently Hobbes is uber sensitive to his vaccines. Great.
So, our little buddy is not feeling so great. He's eating a bit, but feeling all fevery and cranky. I tucked him in his basket by the fire and hope this passes quickly. In the meantime, I have a team of 6 doctors, a cabillion staff members, a groomer, a boatload of diagnostic equipment and some fresh new opinions on how to get him better.
But a little prayer wouldn't hurt either...
*UPDATE* Hobbes is much better this morning (I post late at night). He is still stiff, but his fever is down and he is eating a bit. I will change the title of the post--sorry for the scare!!

What a turn the headline gave me. We pray that Hobbes is up and about, his normal self STAT.
Sweet Hobbes ~ please get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and take it easy for a few days. We want your orange stripy goodness to be up and feeling like yourself soon!!! Sounds like you have a good team behind you making sure you do well.
Sending you lots of hugs, scritches, scratches and purrs!
xo Catherine & Banjo
Yeah ease the headline :-) We can't pray for our orange stripey if we all have heart failure!!!!
You've got the best prayer team assembled too-Hobbes' fans. He'll pull through.
Talked to my daughter in KY and her 4 year old is still sick. She runs him out to her friends every day and night, she was here 2 1/2 years ago I know she doesn't feed him good or on schedule. Believe it or not, his situation is better than Alex's was. But a mom she is not. Throw an extra prayer his way.
Feel better soon Hobbes. I remember my mom had a toy poodle and we found out he was allergic to his vaccinations. They had to find another brand to use because he ended up having seizures the first go round.
That was some headline, Lin! I stopped short what I was doing and had to hear for myself that the orange guy is ok. I'll start on the Hail Marys.
Vanilla--I'm sorry for the scare! I was worried last night and I guess that played in my posting. He is better this morning!
Catherine--I'm sorry for the scare--I changed the title. I was really worried last night, but this morning he was a lot better. He's even eating and wanting to go outside. Whew!
Helene--I'm sorry for the scare, pally. I posted late last night and I guess my worry translated into my post. He is a bit better this morning and I'm not so worried anymore. Whew! That said, he is a CAT--I am more worried about that child. I'd love to grab all those kids in the world and bring them home with me. I will say prayers for him.
Blueyes--I freaked out because last year the vet told me he was going to die and now here he was, sick again. He is much better this morning and I like the new vet. I'm glad we figured out that he is allergic to his vaccinations--even if it was the hard way. At least he didn't have seizures like your mom's dog. Poor thing.
Veronica--I'm sorry for the scare, pally. I was really worried about him last night and that came out in my heading. He is much better today, pally, so don't worry. I didn't want a replay of when he was so sick last year--it was too scary!
Glad he's better this AM!
I guess that must have been some first headline! I'm glad Hobbes is doing better. Goat hugs
Sending a prayer your way for your little buddy Hobbes. I call Midnight my little buddy or Puss most of the time.
WHEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. OK, OK, my heart rate is back to normal now.
What is FIP?
My orange stripey cat died a few weeks ago. :( He was very old, but I think it was malpractice at the vet's that made him sick, and he was never able to shake it (I think he had a reaction to a super dose of Frontline, vaccines, and a billion other things they gave him). The loss is still pretty raw.
I hate vets. Sorry. They seems to enjoy scaring us, soaking us of our money and keeping in the dark about mysterious illnesses. :( And even after tons of money and tears have been shed, the vets STILL don't know what's going on and can't help.
OK, rant over. sorry. whew.
Get well soon, Hobbes! And next time, run FAST and FAR from that carrier when it comes near! Atta boy!
Oh, you know I am emotionally attached to Hobbes, so you can bet I am sending him (and you) good thoughts!
Oh my goodness Lin, yes, the title startled my heart...poor baby! gosh, the one job I could NOT do because I would have my heart broken everytime a pet was sick!
Prayers are definitely cast in your direction...
take care of that little fellow!
Well,I for one am glad I didn't see the first headline. I'm also happy to see the update that he's feeling better today. Our big orange boy needs to feel good enough to go exploring outside. Let's go, Hobbes!
One of the bad things about not having a car is getting the cats to a good vet - there is one within walking distance to us but he like totally sucks. I dread any of the cats getting sick - have no idea what we will do...Our vets in Alexandria were super but very expensive.
Eep...I'll keep positive thoughts on the brain today for him. Poor little guy- he seems like he takes it like a champ though. Our boy being so fat too, I can't see being sick stopping him from eating, but I'm glad Hobbes has been up and about today.
Sure am glad my Grandkitty is doing better this morning. He's in good hands both with the vet and you guys. What a lucky "little" fellow!
Mom
I am sorry he isn't feeling better and I hope he recovers soon. We used to have a cat who had a bad reaction to his vaccines. It was terrifying. He is going to be most displeased if you place him on a diet.
Poor Hobbes. I hope he is feeling better quickly. He is a special guy.
You can never have too much Stripey Goodness! Hobbes, I'm sorry you are feeling poorly. I am going to send my best healing purrs for you to get all better.
I'm so sorry he's having bad reactions, but very glad that it seems he's taken a turn for the better. :)
Diana--Thanks, me too! He's doing much better even this afternoon. Hooray!
Pricilla--Yeah, I didn't think it was THAT bad! Oops. He's doing a lot better now. Whew!
Chuck--I call Hobbes my "Butter Buddy"--I don't know why. But, he's doing much better this afternoon. Whew!
Rebecca--It's Feline Infectious Peritonitis, which is deadly. That vet told me that every time I went there. Grace is 13 and Hobbes is 2 now--neither is dead. I like that the distemper and rabies vaccine is every 3 years now--I don't like loading them up with that crap either. And yes, like human doctors, they run too many tests, cost too much money, and still don't know enough. It is aggravating.
Betty--He's much, much better, Betty. Sorry for the scare.
Tracy--He's a ton better now, Tracy. I was really worried last night though. I guess that transferred to my title. Eeek!
Kathy--He just went outside, Kathy, so you know he is better. Whew!
Grace--I am happy with the new vet so far--they just have much more technology there to diagnose instead of just guessing. Let's hope I don't need it! Finding a good vet is tough, isn't it?
Nancy--They worry about the chubby guys because they can have severe liver damage should they stop eating when they are sick. But he is much better today and eating again. Whew! Thanks for the good vibes.
Mom--Yeah, he's pretty much his old self, thank goodness! The vet called me today to check on him. It was a refreshing change.
Merry--Yeah, he's better, Merry. It sure is scary when they get sick though. It's like kids--you feel so helpless.
Daisy--Daisy, Hobbes is a moose. The doctor said that she would like to see him lose 5 lbs! Yikes. He is not going to be happy about that. He is much better today--thank you for the healing purrs. :)
Violet--He's much better. I guess he can't have all those shots next time. Yeah....good idea. I can't do this again.
Well, I missed the scare, but I'm glad he is better.
We're glad Hobbes is better and will never think there is too much Stripey Goodness! Hugs to Hobbes!
Oh poor Hobbes! I do hope he gets better very soon. He sounds like he has good doctors and we know that he has an excellent Mommy that is taking good care of him. Spoil him and give him a big cuddle for me! Wishing him a very speedy recovery. Big hugs xx,
Susan
You know what would warm his heart? Weiner dog.
Just a thought. ;-)
Sharky--Yeah, he's up to his old shenanigans. But he's better now. Whew!
Beaded Tail--The vet thinks there is 5 lbs too much of Hobbes. I haven't told Hobbes that yet though.
Hot Rocks--He's better now, pally, but it was scary for a day or so. Whew!
Jodi--Oh yeah! I think it is about time for a visit, don't you?
Aww, not again! Poor Hobbes can't win with those vaccines. I'm glad you found a vet with fancier equipment, it could make all the diff if there is ever an emergency with our fave stripey cat. Now don't get me started on the dangers of vaccines...
(and yes, my kids are vaccinated but don't think I'm not scared shitless every time a needle comes close to them). Grrr.
Well hooray for Hobbes feeling better this morning. I guess I missed the scare since I was slacking last night. Sounds like you found a much better vet for our stripey friend
Casey--Homeboy just needs some excitement every so often apparently. Ugh. I was never big on vaccines either, but my kids still got them. I'm still on the fence about Guardasil for Em--can't find a lick of info on that vaccine that isn't propaganda from the manufacturer.
Ann--Yeah, he's better today, thank goodness. He just took a swipe at Grace, so I guess he is back to normal. Yeah! I think.
That boy needs to stop sending us on an emotional roller coaster. I'm relieved to hear that he's feeling better and that the fever broke.
Man loving him is like loving another kid. When he's happy, I'm happy. When he's under the weather, I'm feeling blue.
