Box 'O Sunshine

Ooooh, I got a nice surprise the other day--I came home and found a box on the front porch sent all the way from sunny Florida.

It seems, Casey, recently moved into a spiffy new abode that came with an orange tree in the backyard! And while they were all busy unpacking and painting and such, that darn orange tree just kept dropping juicy oranges all over the place.

So, she grabbed those two cute kids that she's got and forced them into manual labor--having them pick some oranges for Aunt Lin. Graham proceeded to get himself stuck in the tree, so they had to wrap up the harvest pretty quick, but it was enough to fill a box to ship to me.

Ahhh, and those bad boys were GOOD! Nothing like a sweet box of Florida sunshine and citrusie yumminess. Joe and I had a full week of juicy goodness in our lunches thanks to Casey and her gang.

And do you know what else she sent?

Yep, kid art for my refrigerator so that I could pretend it was the old days when my kids actually brought home stuff to post on my refrigerator.

There were tissue-paper mosaics, a ground hog puppet (which I LOVE), a lovely homage to the Number 1 with a green pom pon strategically placed by Elliot, and Oval Man. *sniff, sniff* It was like the old days again. And now I just miss my kids being little even more.

Thanks, Casey, Graham, Eliot, and Jamie (who didn't know it, but sent me the Mother of All Oranges) for your sweet surprise! Happy New House!!

And Happy New Orange Tree!

Ahhhhhhhhhh my uncle used to have a tree when he lived in Hollywood FL. How I didn't appreciate it then. That picture just oozes Florida sunshine, palm trees, screened in pool in back....

I seem to have sunshine today but if you could find someone to package up some heated temperatures...well warm air is what I long for!!!

Always nice to get an unexpected present. There was some kind of citrus tree blight a few years ago in Florida and the powers that be made everyone dispose of their backyard trees - my brother lost his orange and grapefruit trees - also you can only use "native" plants in your yard/garden.

Ahhh, there is NOTHING like fresh oranges and refridgerator art! What a delight!
I lived in FL. for one year and liked having the produce so readily available anywhere!
Take good care...

Like others have said, "That's sweet." Both the oranges and the kid art. I still carry a small rabbit with a sentiment written on it in my brief case. It was the work of a friend's young daughter who drew and cut out the rabbit and wrote sentiment. That was nearly 25 years ago.

Wow, an orange tree. :| WOW.

Kid art is sweet! I have various assortments stashed in a file cabinet. :)

Yay, glad you loved the oranges and the art! The orange tree is pretty much out of commission but I will keep the art coming your way. Maybe Em will start producing more output in the art department if I provide some friendly competition.

Jamie was all happy to get a mention on your blog so you made his day. Me too! ;)

Helene--Somehow I don't think you'd appreciate it if it was yours. Casey has NO idea how much we needed those oranges this winter. It gave us hope that it would be warm again....someday.

Catherine--WONDERFUL! They were so darn juicy. I think they were even better knowing that someone picked them for us.

Melodie--I forgot how much I love kid art. :) It does warm your heart like the sunshine.

Vanilla--Isn't it?! That was a fun box to get.

Jodi--It was pretty warm here last week--enough that I opened windows to move some air around this place. Okay, so we were freezing--but it felt good to have fresh air anyway.

Grace--Oh, that would be awful to lose those trees! Wasn't he the one who had the frozen lizards falling???

Highway--Me too! Isn't it funny what you miss sometimes?

Pricilla--I LOVE that! Dang. I may have to come over to steal that from your fridge because that is HILARIOUS!

Anne--It's funny because you don't appreciate all that art when you are knee deep in it. Now I love it. :)

Tracy--I would love the fruit and the seafood. Chicago doesn't exactly have great seafood. :(

Hot Rocks--I couldn't believe she sent them! It probably cost her $30 to ship them, but they were worth every single penny!

Betty--The pallies are the BEST! I count myself lucky. :)

Chuck--I have a few pieces that I treasure--one of which is a really lame candy dish that Colin made for me. He is taking pottery at school this semester, and I asked for a new one. But you know I'll always save the old funky one that makes me laugh.

Rebecca--We used to have an apple tree, but I hated the mess from it in the fall when the apples would fall. You had to spray that thing to keep the bugs away and all that--it was a pain. I wonder if orange trees are like that too? Either way, I'm glad I got to share in the bounty with none of the work! ;)

Casey--Em sucks. I'm telling you, all that kid does is spend my money and suck her teeth at me. I think she was secretly jealous that I fussed all over that artwork from your kids. *snicker* Uh oh--I hope Jamie wasn't mad that we snagged the Big Bertha of Oranges!

Nancy--There is nothing like good oranges this time of year--I guess because I just miss good fruit so much in winter. And it was fun to get it in the mail. ;) Hey--that was a nice interview!

Ann--It was such a nice surprise! The pallies are the BEST!

Split Rock--They were GREAT oranges--not like the flavorless ones you pay big money for sometimes. I feel so bad about your Smokey--what a loss! Sounds like he lived a very good life with you, my friend.

Sharky--I dunno how long he'll last--Hobbes has been eyeing his arms and legs!

Now that really is a box of Florida sunshine! How nice of them to send you the oranges and art!

I always thought it would be so fun to have something like an orange tree in my yard. I think it's because I live too far north for it, so things like orange trees or similar warm climate plants. seem like they're out of a fantasy world or something.

Oh you are one very lucky girl!! I could almost taste those oranges and thanks to my talented little niece and nephew...I have a few fridge art masterpieces too....PLUS Rahm Emmanuel won the primary--I want to move back to the city as soon as I can (seriously, so tired of snow shoveling, garden hoeing and all of it!)

I had about 34 tomato plants (by accident cos the bad ones turned out to thrive that we thought had died) last summer so I think you may be right. But I LOVE oranges and it would mean I was living in warmer Florida so you may be wrong...

LOL - Yes, he was. Funny you should remember it - it was about a year ago. He was so pissed about his trees - they didn't have the blight but the state removed them anyway - they were old trees too.
