While I'm used to marching bands and colorguard, Em has started a new adventure on Dance Team this year. And while you think Marching Band competitions are interesting.....
Okay, so I had the giggles. Whenever I'm trying something new--whether it is dance team competitions or acupuncture--I've got to giggle. I just do.
This is what I learned about the world of dance team competitions:
1. There are categories--we were in the "poms" category. This involves the use of poms, needless to say.
2. There are more bump-its than Jersey Shore at these events
3. Apparently spelling things with your poms is a requirement. Really, it is.
4. Deciphering what they spell with their poms is a whole 'nother story.
5. Men can enjoy dance team competitions. Just ask the dude behind me who sang along with the theme from "Speed Racer" that one group used. He was very excited and told me that was his favorite cartoon like 8 times.
6. While we were on bleachers, it was climate controlled. Sweet!
7. The lines for the ladies restroom is ridiculously long. Uh hello? Could we not have figured out that mostly women go to these things? And maybe we should account for that?
8. They can load a football field with marchers, instruments, equipment, and dozens of parent helpers faster than ten chicks with some poms can get out onto a basketball court.
9. Em is really a good dancer. Who knew she could shake it like that??! (She is the tall blond in the back to the right. Then she is in the very front to the right at the end)
10. Another major requirement is the transfer of poms from one girl to another. This got to be really creative with some teams. One group actually pulled poms from the rear ends of their costumes. Not kidding. It was weird and I giggled.
11. I giggle. A lot.

This is a first for me. I admit total rapt fascination. I watched the pom switched from girl to girl, I ooh at the letters being made and by golly I wanted to be a Pom Girl.
Sigh, someone should open up a fitness center for us old girls who want to shake our pompoms.
Uhm...not sure I get it (yes...I want to giggle!) but I better keep an open mind cause Dori will probably end up this route!
You are an ALL STAR!
Giggles are insanely good!
Each school activity has its own drum it beats to. The feel of the parents are different too.
Hey, our school's pom team was in Chicago over the weekend at the Chicagoland UDA Competition. They did very well.
Well it certainly is all very "girly"! Love the dresses and the color combination, of bright green, fuschia and gold! (Mmmm..will have to use that in a bracelet!)
That is some green!
Very entertaining to be sure.
I gotta get me some poms now!
Good for her, trying a new activity. And at least this one is inside in a climate controlled gym. They all look very cute.
You're going to be addicted in no time! I LOVED it!! I went to every game to watch them. :)
I thought the girls did a great job in that routine!
Those are some bright green costumes.
I give them props for just having the courage to use a mash-up of smash mouth songs, including the one from Shrek :P
That was some fancy pom passing! When I was in high school, pom poms were the size of the moon. :) Em did a great job!
Wow...those are some outfits too. Sheesh! I had never heard of different categories of dance team before either...we just had the one in hs. I guess if you don't do it, you don't know. Fun to watch though, I'm sure! Go Em!!
I do remember going to all my children's events. Good or bad, I loved them just for being them. I hope Em just lets go and has a good time with this.
Number 11 for sure.
Highway--Yeah, but the clothes are spandex. Would NOT be a good look for us gals with lumps. ;)
Diana--It was fun to see and experience, but I'll stick to Marching competitions, thank you.
Grace--I love new stuff because I take it all in. I kept yelling "Hey, Joe--look! It's Snookie!" and he got really tired of that after about 10 times. Sigh.
Jodi--We are just building our program so it was a tough competition. But, we have to start somewhere, right?
Hot Rocks--I have to say that we had some great costumes in comparison to the ones we saw. Not a cheap activity by any means! I loved the colors too!
Pricilla--It was cute, but I do admit to leaving after the first category. I don't think I could have lasted for 4 more hours of this stuff.
Betty--Look how small they are! When I was in poms, they were HUGE! They are so cute now.
Anne--I love the climate control compared to marching band competitions, but I sure hate those bleachers.
Violet--I enjoyed our category, but I have to say we left. I wasn't ready of 4 hours of that. I think I have to start slowly. :) I thought they did a nice job too.
Ann--Aren't they cute?! I think we were the most colorful costumes there. Most were black with accessories. Probably to save $$ because that adds up quickly!
Ben--Yeah, they weren't thrilled with the music, but it was cute. There was one group who dressed like the Blackhawks and acted like they were hockey players skating. I think the guys liked that one.
Beaded Tails--Mine too! And we were super lame!! I was a pom gal for about 4 months and hated it.
Nancy--There is Hip hop, kick, poms, open poms (?), half-time, and I can't remember what else. It is a HUGE thing now. Back in our day we just choreographed our own shows and boy, were we LAME!
Marilynne--I like them too. I'm having lots of fun going to these things while I can. They'll be over too quickly. :(
I don't know what to add to this reply list....other than Nice color of green.slight smile.
OK...I am old and out of the loop.Yanking grey hair out.:):(
That was a nice share! Enjoyable! :D
"Em is really a good dancer. Who knew she could shake it like that??!". It runs in the blood, right? I think she got it from you, Lin. Didn't she? :)
