If you think I love Hobbes, you gotta hear Irene talk about her pet turtle, Noelle. Or Noel--she's not sure if it is a boy or a girl turtle. I guess figuring that out is tough or something. I didn't want to ask. While we have had many a discussion over the cubicle walls about such things as Bed Intruders and Eye-Spy Playing Cats, the latest topic is all about Irene's pet turtle. And what a turtle needs in the way of creature comforts. Who knew turtles are so damn fussy about their environment? I had no idea.
Yes, we logged some time on the net searching for the perfect perch and water conditioners. We found a plethora of heating lamps and tanks to keep your turtle happy. Heck, we even found shell conditioners--otherwise known as "turtle wax". Not kidding. Who knew you had to wax your turtle??
Imagine me doing the whole Karate Kid bit--"Wax on. Wax off." I don't know why, but Irene does not find this humorous. I think it may be lost in translation as that may be a bit before her time. Sigh. I hate it when my humor is outdated.
So, when I told her that I was going to post Turtley's (that's what I call him/her because I think "Noelle" is a lame turtle name) photo, she had her mom take some shots with her cell phone of the turtle at home. And while the photos were adorable, imagine her mom trying to capture the turtle's best side. That just cracks me up for some reason.
And this whole turtle thing just reminds me of this:
What is with that kid???
Now, don't be begging me for "I Like Turtle Tuesdays" or anything like that. Irene's mom is busy doing stuff at home and she can't be spending her days photographing the turtle for us.

Hmmm.... I've never understood the joy of a turtle as a pet... chocolate pecan and caramel turtles to eat yea.... but a turtle for a pet... nope...
To each their own! :)
xo Catherine
I fear turtles in the same way that I fear seagulls and chickens.
Noelle or Noel? How great is that?
When I was seven years of age, my best friend had a turtle which he named "Oscar." My Dad laughed for the rest of his life about the day Donald ran into our house yelling, "Come look! Oscar laid an egg!" Dad told him he would need to change the name to "Oscarina."
Mmmm... a turtle seems like a bit dull for a pet, but whatever, to each his own. OH and BTW...I laughed at your Karate kid wax on, wax off bit!
Sylvia's sister loves turtles -- the kind that have pecan and caramel covered with chocolate.
BTW, have you ever seen a post turtle?
Well you know I did a post about my pet turtles, actually one was mine and one was Skip's - they were named George and Herman. And we never did anything special for them - they were rather large box turtles. I like turtles but then I like lizards and snakes as well tho reptiles don't make really great pets - they just don't like to cuddle, ya know. (Tho I suspect constrictor type snakes might be induced to give you a hug now and then).
(ooh, kewl - my word verification is "simper")
"I Love Turtle Tuesdays," BWAHAHAHAHHA!!!! Aw, come on! That would be fun! You're a blogger-- maybe you could go on the road with your raving camera, "snapping" pics of turtles everywhere. Get it, snapping?! BWAHAHAHAHAHA
.... yesssss, me thinks cabin fever is setting in....
I'm inclined to agree with you that Turtley is a much more fitting name!
Never had a thing for turtles. I used to want a bird so I could train it to sit on my finger when I did my homework. Would have been smarter if I trained it to DO my homework.
Well, long story short, I finally got one and the poops smelled so bad, and the seeds it spit out EVERYWHERE was so dirty, I begged the pet store to take it back.
After a stern lecture, they did. SUCKERS!

Turtles are very zen
So...turtles rely on us to wax their shells, then how ever do they survive in the wild?
Bewildered in Baltimore.
I prefer cuddly pets but maybe that's because I was bit by a box turtle as a kid. They sure do have a grip and they don't let go! I laughed at your wax on, wax off bit too! That video was on our stations too since it's from Portland. Pretty odd to me!
I had a turtle when I was a kid and it didn't live very long. I like dogs better anyway
I killed my share of turtle pets as a kid. Best result was a couple of large ones I had in a pen in the yard. I thought you couldn't buy them any more because of salmonella?
Hilarious... "I like turtles" You can never know enough zombie lore.
You had me laughing from the beginning, but then you added that video. Good grief, I can't stop chuckling.
Wax on, wax off! Hilarious! I can just picture you (and even me!) saying that and getting a blank look from some youngster. As if I didn't feel old enough already.
Too funny.
Catherine--I guess some folks could say that about the frogs too, right? So, I cheer her on and invite him over for a swim in the pond in the summer. Now wouldn't that be fun?!
DG--Really??! Turtles scare you?? And how many do you run across in your everyday life?
Vanilla--Hahaha! That is funny, Vanilla. I like Oscarina for a name. :)
Hot Rocks--Thank you for laughing at my Karate Kid reference. I think there is enough drama for Irene with all of her relatives, so the turtle is just right. :)
Chuck--Me too! Love those candy turtles. Don't tell Irene. What is a post turtle?
Grace--I think turtles are nice because they don't make noise or cause a lot of ruckus or anything. And Irene is really excited about him/her, so I'm happy for her. I love that her mom goes along and takes photos of it for us.
Rebecca--Hahaha! Who wound you up today??! You are cracking me up. :0
I don't typically see turtles in my everyday life--do you????
Violet--Yeah, where did the name Noelle come from???! I'm not asking, but I think it has to do with Christmas--when she got him. Her. Whatever.
Nellie--Hahaha! Birds are very dirty and noisy. Tough lesson, eh? We always had hamsters who were just as messy. And they never just died--they always lingered and suffered horribly--and me along with them. Ugh.
Pricilla--I would think so. They don't make noise or move really quick or anything. Maybe that is why Irene loves them so.
Nancy--I don't know! Hmmmmm. I think they probably get eaten before their shells need treatment. Or the pet supply business has us all snookered.
Beaded Tail--What was with that kid??! Weird. I like the furry pets too. I'm not big on reptiles and fish--too hard to fix.
Ann--I think they take more vitamins and such than we can give them in captivity. Irene has spent a fortune in vitamins and treatments for Noelle.
Sharky--You can't buy the little ones that we used to have as kids. There is a minimum size that they can sell now.
Highway--That kid is definitely zombied out. Weird. Very weird. I sure hope Irene doesn't do that at work.
Petula--Oh, and I do the hand gesture that goes with the Wax on, wax off too. Irene just doesn't get it. Bummer. I think she is missing out. Thanks for supporting me, pally.
I love the reporters ever so slight WTF pause before she moves on with the rest of broadcast.
I like tuhtles.
I'm going to use that as a go-to statement when I'm not sure what to say.
We just got a pair of gerbils named Bert and Ernie and my Mommeh is busy shopping for toys, chewing sticks, treats, fancy confetti-colored bedding, etc for them!
We had more than a dozen of them along with our menagerie of fish, hermit crabs, hamsters and guinea pigs.
CG--I love the reporter too! That kid is one weird kid. I'm just glad he's not mine.
Daisy--Oh, that is very exciting and EXPENSIVE! We used to have hamsters and they cost me a fortune each month in supplies. Feeding Hobbes is cheaper, Daisy! Be nice to Bert and Ernie!! NO eating them!!
Veronica--We had turtles too, but I don't remember much about them. Irene is very excited to have Noelle in her new house and I'm happy they found each other.
