Over the River and Thru the Woods

The house is gonna be a little louder, a little dirtier, and a little more crowded as Colin comes home today. It's so funny how the three of us were just waiting for Saturday to come so we could be a family under one roof again. Give us three days and we'll all be on each other's nerves--but it is a good feeling for the moment.

It's odd when you children go off to college--I not only miss him, but I miss his friends as well. I feel the hole in my life where this group of kids used to be--in my home, at school, and in the band. It's the weirdest thing to be missing someone else's kid too.

So, while I can't wait to see my kid, I kinda wanna see the friends too. I miss Ted being in the CYSO this year, going to those concerts without his smiley face (and talents) just isn't the same. Hanging around the house without Taylor and Stephanie in the family room is just too quiet. And while we certainly aren't on the priority list to visit with this quick trip home, I just hope I catch a glimpse of my favorite kids--if not Thanksgiving, then Christmas.

Heck, I'm hoping to just catch a glimpse of my own in the next week.

Oh you're just the ultimate earth mother, aren't you? LOL Whether it's frogs or friends of the family; kids to kitties - You're a good lady, Miss Lin, with a good, and open, heart and hearth.

I think your sentiments are the surest sign you have been a good parent. Congratulations! Fran's Dad

Funny, even though my kids haven't gone to college yet, I know exactly what you mean. My son had a band that used to practice in our den every weekend. These kids would eat dinner with us and sleep over. So the house was always hopping. When the band broke up, I found myself feeling empty and a little sad, but not understanding why. Things were dismal for about six months. Now he has not one but two bands and the house is jumping again. And I'm happy again.

Enjoy the boy! I know you've gotta miss him awful.

Have a lovely weekend with your son. If you see him. I remember when I came home from school the last place I could be found was well, home.

It leaves a big hole in your heart when your family can't be together, a pain that never goes away

I know exactly what you mean! I had a group of boys practically living here during their high school years. I fed them, talked to them, helped them with their papers. What can I say? I miss them!

Have a wonderful weekend with your college boy! I get to see mine on Wednesday.

Well, okay then. And let us know how you feel when Colin drops two overstuffed laundy bags on the floor.

Have a great week! *seriously*

I miss you too Mrs. Kautz!!! Did Colin tell you that we are planning on seeing Harry Potter on Friday? If he can go, and I pick him up, you can see me then!

Cute boys, Lin! Hope you have a great holiday and that you get to do lots of cleaning up after them to last you till Christmas :)

Grace--I just hope I get points for trying, Grace.

Fran's Dad--I try, but that doesn't mean we always succeed. I sure miss those kids, though. I'm sure you know what I mean. ;)

DG--It's too quiet for me. I like when there are things happening here, except I'm not sure I could do the band thing regularly. Yikes!

Pricilla--Yeah, me too. I'm hoping he can spend time with his friends here too. Maybe I'll bribe them with pizza or something.

Anonymous--:( Sometimes it just can't be.

Betty--I really miss the hustle and bustle of teens coming and going. Now it just seems so....QUIET.

Vanilla--I don't mind that--it is the eye rolls and the sucking of the teeth because I breathe that gets me. I know, we'll be itching to get away from him by the end of the week--and vice versa, I'm sure.

Taylor--I can't wait to see ya, Taylor! I think I'm gonna have to schedule a road trip to Ohio one of these days. ;)

Melodie--You never really realize how much you are going to miss them until they are gone. Enjoy every single minute that he's at home, pally. It goes really fast and now my house is really, really quiet. :(

Nellie--They are nice boys too, Nellie. And fun. I love to listen to them laughing in my family room. I think it's gonna be a fun week ahead.

oh the joy of having a child return to the nest for a visit. Whenever mine did they had so many to do and people to see that I was on the bottom of the list

You are much more social than I am. I had no trouble with the end of the endless teens.

I hope u have fun! Aren't u just glad that Hobbes will never abandon you for college?

Have a happy visit from the kids, Lin! I do appreciate your advice on enjoying time with my boys while I still have them in the nest. I think of your advice every time I contemplate shoving them out of the balcony!!

Love ya!

Well, enjoy them! That is kind of a weird concept, missing other kids that aren't yours. But i get it;)

I hope you have a wonderful week with Colin being home and hopefully get to see your other favorite kids too!

Awww!!! You're the ultimate mom. :)

Lin said...

Stephanie--Hey, you've got one coming up too! I'll bet your mom is gonna be happy having you home.

Jodi--Pally, I KNOW you get it!

Ann--I know. But why do I smile as they come and go from HERE for a change?

Sharky--Really??? I love this. I really do. And boy, am I gonna miss it when it is over for good.

peewee--No, but he'll ditch me for the squirrel in the next yard. Aw, but he always comes home for dinner. :)

Veronica--There are some moms who don't miss it, but I like having the kids around. They make me laugh. It's too quiet when they are gone and I dread when it is for good.

Nancy--But they are great kids and funny! I love to hear them talking and laughing in the next room. Good kids--all of them.

Beaded Tail--I can see Taylor is coming over on Friday (see comments) so I'll be able to see him for like 5 minutes before they rush out the door. Sigh.

Rebecca--Or I'm just a big loser. :) Being a mom has been one big adventure and I don't want it to end.

I think this post is wonderful. To not only miss your kids but their friends? Sounds like you've been one cool mom so far and I don't see that changing :)

Happy Monday,
Jen

Jen--I'm never the "cool" mom because I have rules around this place that kids don't like. The "cool" moms kinda let anything go--NOT here! That said, I do love it when the kids come around with their friends. They make me laugh.
