As a special "community service", I'm gonna introduce you all to what's hip and cool in the world today. Okay, so some of you have teens and you know what is hip--but what about the rest of us--you know, like Joe? Somebody's got to clue him in so that he looks like he knows what the kids are talking about. We don't want him to be left out or (gasp!) lookin' uncool.
Here is today's lesson: Willow Smith (daughter of Will Smith and Jayda (?) Pinkett) singing that super annoying "Whip My Hair". Hold on for the ride, Grace.....
Enter my grandpa-0r I should say, me, posing as my grandpa.
Isn't this the most annoying thing ever?? And add to that the kid is nine. NINE. As in nine years old singing about her "swagger". Does she even know what that is?? And should she at that age?
Criminy. Someone wrote in the comments about the video that she is "slappin' where her boobs should be"--yeah, no kidding. I think this poor kid is way too young to be pimped out like this, dancing and singing like she's old enough to have swagger. Don't these two have enough money that now they are pimpin' out their nine year old kid?
And while we are on it--what is with that stupid stomp crap the kids do now? It's lame. They do this at basketball games and pep assemblies at the high school, and I have to admit it totally passes me by. I don't get it. I think we played patty-cake when we were little and then it progressed to the hand-jive, which I think was 4th or 5th grade. Now the black girls dress all slutty and shake their god-given "talents" and do this stomp stuff. Sorry, it's just stupid. And you don't look all that good doing it.
So, now when you go to the grocery store and you hear folks talking about "whipping your hair back and forth", you can jump in because I have officially clued you in to this. You can thank me later.
Or hate me because that over-used chorus is now stuck in your head.
Sorry.

I walked in on my 11 year old dancing along to this video. I guess the kids really do like it.
Okay, you warned me that it was super-annoying and I turned it on anyway. When will I ever learn?
Where are the child abuse monitors when you really need them? "Pimp" is the right word.
I've seen the pictures of Willow on the gossip sites (my hidden pleasure) but this is the first time I've actually watched the video.... wow.
I can't get past the fact that she looks like a tiny Fresh Prince of Bellaire but is dressed like a girl. Uncle Phil would NOT approve.
24 hours later and your Zen has moved back to Kentucky. Oh well.
As annoying as this video is, it's not as bad as the male youth of today walking around with their pants and shorts around their knees emulating prisoners. That is something I will never understand.
Anita's Mom
In my opionion I think Will Smith needs a "whippin" for promoting his NINE year old daughter in this fashion...times sure have changed!
Wen
Pallie, I agree with you. Let me just say after I watched this video last week I tried whipping my hair. Aaaahhh it made me awful dizzy for a bit. No whipping the hair for this gal!
As for the stomping gals...we have the "Flygrlz". Once when Demi was in a grade school and made it to the championship hula-hoop contest-- that played out during the hs basketball game half time, the Flygrlz performed. And, the boy in front of me was waving folded dollar bills. So even the kids think the stomp action is a bit ho.
OK, it is "Jada" and she and her husband should be taken out and shot, or at least charged with being negligent parents. How long before she and her brother hit the tabloids and everyone is "oh, boo-hoo where did we go wrong" - Show them this!
Yes, annoying beyond all human comprehension and...
I like "stepping" and I like most hip-hop dancing. A lot of the hip-hop stuff goes back 35 years or so to break dancing -
And those young women in the marching bands in teeny-tiny costumes that are 2 sizes too small? Shaking their booty and what all else they got? White/black - doesn't matter - it's disgusting and demeaning. What are young women thinking???
Ok, now - Have a niiice day!
well theres 4 minutes I wont get back lol That's definitely not my cup of tea.
Against my better judgement I'm going to listen to it. I didn't even know who Barney was until he was past his prime for kids. I think Barney Fife not purple.
Watch for my future Comcast rant. And I remembered they were the ones I posted about who actually found it and asked if they could help.
I think it is so sad, young girls, think they have to be visual, sexual objects, flaunting their "booty" to be cool. They are really advertising their wares, in a slutty manner that surely can't garner respect from boys! There is so much time to grow up and have the responsibilities of an adult, why not enjoy being innocent and childlike for a few more years? Ahhh....what is the world coming to?
Ok, just watched a bunch of "stomp" videos - saw none that featured the marching band ho's - most featured guys. Turns out I have seen the movie "Stomp the Yard" and "stomp" and "stepping" seem to be interchangeable terms. I've been following this dance form for quite some time and I am a huge admirer. It's not that far off from Irish step-dancing or tap. It's athletic, rhythmic and complicated as all get out. Definitely a respected dance form; a classic dance form brought up to date. Also there is "pop and lock" - Love that too! Much like Michael Flatley who took the classic Irish step dancing into the modern era. I was planning on showing a quick Michael Flatley clip some time this week, think I'll do it today.
Most of the trash dancing I've seen is in marching bands - the college bands are totally x-rated!
Wow...I feel old. And my next birthday will be the first of my life sequence of 29th birthdays. Thanks for cluing me in...sheesh...I take one year off of teaching and I'm already clueless. Also, I am really disappointed in Will Smith. I always thought he was a wholesome person and doing a good job with his kids. Now I'm not so sure. I don't care how much money my daughter could rake in if I was in his place. SHE"S 9! Last I checked that means she's still a child and still under my rules. Sheesh.
I have already seen this video. Willow is cute but the song is very annoying...so I won't bother watching it again. Hopefully, my six year old granddaughter won't see it. She is easily impressed.:(
Willow is a pretty little girl but she's just that, a little girl so why the heck is a 9 year old doing something like this. I'm so glad my kids are grown.
Preach it, sista!
My son is in the room with me, so I dare not play the video yet. I actually am undecided if I want to be cultured (with the crap that is our modern culture, anyway). based on what you said, I can guess that the video is pretty bad.
Very, very sad today what's going on with parents pimping out their kids. The Bible says that the world would eventually do stuff like that-- that parents would eventually sell their son for a coat and their daughter for wine. :( Of course, there have been crappy parents all throughout history, but the difference is that today doing this crap is "cool" and marketed as desirable. Yikes.
Parts of that look suspiciously like the goat dance of joy. I think I should sue.
So far I've managed to avoid actually HEARING this song, and I'm going to keep it that way, since ear worms tend to get stuck in my head for DAYS and DAYS. So I know ABOUT it, but I can remain in blissful ignorance of knowing what it sounds like.
For now.
Until someone (or perhaps their kid) at the fire station has it as a ringtone. After all, that's how I found out about 'Apple bottom jeans and the boots WITH THE FUR..."
DG--That's what bothers me--that the little kids LOVE this stuff. Now, that said, if they had just changed the words up a bit and didn't doll her up to look 23, I'd be fine with it. Let's not glorify trash and gangsta to the younger set, okay? Oh, and tell your daughter to be careful whipping her hair all around. Her neck is gonna hurt plenty when she gets to be my age. :)
Vanilla--Yeah, but I'm coolin' ya'll up! Now that you know what it is, you can properly 'dis it. :) I feel like my grandpa hating on this.
Casey--My problem is that she is just acting/singing/dressing waaayyyy too grown up for 9. Where do you go from here???
Anita's Mom--I think there were a couple of those boys in the video, weren't there? Sigh. I'm with you, pally. Pull your darn pants up!
Wen--I thought of you when I saw this one! And you thought the pep assembly was bad! YIkes. Scary stuff, eh?
That is truly scary. OMG. This is one of those times when I almost don't mind the cruel trick of no children Mother Nature played on me.
The things I didn't know that I didn't know!
Jodi--Thanks for the back-up on this one, Jodi. I know I sound like my grandpa, but I think this one just goes too far. And so does the whole "ho" thing in high school. It saddens me that our kids think ho/gangsta is the way to be cool.
Grace--I love how you know that her name is Jada. :) I have not seen a marching band, other than some in the deep south, that wear the slutty colorguard uniforms. I have NEVER seen an inappropriate outfit in the high school level. And while I'm not saying this is a race thing, I do find that this "steppin'" craze is only popular with the black culture here. I don't care for steppin' or hip-hop dancing--it is a tad too slutty for me. That said, my kid just made the dance team--ask me later how that goes.
blueyes--Not for a 9 year old anyway. At least you know what you are avoiding now. ;)
Helene--I find it is good to be up on these things--then I can at least know what the kids are watching. Ugh.
Hot Rocks--That's exactly how I feel and I wonder why some parents think this is cute/funny/cool to have your 9 year old do. Sad.
Grace--You are gonna kill me....are you ready??? I DON'T LIKE IRISH DANCING. There. I said it. I don't. I don't enjoy it and I definitely will not watch it. I turn off Michael Flatley. I'm not Irish--maybe it is a cultural thing. I'm more of a purist when it comes to the dance that I enjoy--classical ballet and clean tap--I don't like that sloppy foot-slidin' Savion Glover-type of tap dancing. I hope we can still be friends, Grace. :)
Nancy--I have found that the coolness factor wins over parental better judgment most times. Parents would rather their kids be cool than appropriate. What's with that. It's a good thing I'm here to keep you up on this stuff now that you aren't teaching. :)
Jean--It's how she is dressed, pimped out, her actions and what she sings that bothers me. What happened to being a little kid??! Sigh.
Ann--My kid just got on the dance team. Why do I think this is gonna come back to haunt me? Eeek!
Rebecca--Oh, it isn't that bad, but I don't agree with having your 9 year old kid made up like that and shakin' what she doesn't have yet. I'm sure Will and Jada think they are doing a fine job with their kids. Whatever. I'll have straight kids but no money. See what I know?
Pricilla--Now THAT is something I'd like to see to this song! Get working on the video, Pricilla!
Shieldmaiden--You big chicken! How am I gonna cool ya' up if you don't watch it?? At least you know what shawty is from the other song, right? Right?????
Stephanie--Well, there are kids and then there are KIDS. My kids were not allowed to dress like that at her age. Not even for the dance recital.
I want to listen, I really do but I am at my parents house and I don't want to give them a heart attact. As it is, I am pretending to work.
But I WILL sneak back later because I am curious and I am totally clueless.
I saw Willow perform this song on Ellen. I still can't get over it. She acts so much older than 10 (oh yeah, she's 10 now) and it's sad her childhood isn't the simple, happy go lucky childhood it should be but at least she'll be rich I guess.
Michael Flatley is awesome, Grace. I met him a couple years ago at one of his shows.
My ears are bleeding! ugh! I just don't get the songs they sing nowadays...
I think I prefer to stay uncool than listen to this kind of music :D
I'm not Irish either, far from it, and classic Irish dance can get tedious which is why Michael Flatley is so fabulous - he turned it on it's head.
Saw a dance-off between Savion Glover and Gregory Hines - Gregory Hines blew Glover away. But then Gregory Hines out danced Baryshnikov too!
Ballet and most modern dance ala Martha Graham or Alvin Ailey lose me very quickly - tap never does.
Oh, and Lin, you're gonna hate me but - I like bagpipes too!
Sharky--Aren't you glad you have me to clue you in, Sharky?? ;)
Highway--Yeah, wait until you get home--we don't want to scare your parents. :) hee! hee!
Beaded Tail--Yeah, she'll have money--but at what cost? Aw heck, she probably doesn't know what it is like to be normal anyway. That makes me sad for her.
Helene--Isn't it nice when you meet a celeb and they are great in person too? I wonder if they know how important that is to folks? Oh--Michael Flatley grew up just minutes from me.
Nessa--I like to sing it because it drives my kids nuts and it makes their friends laugh. :) I guess it is better to know what they listen to than not, right?
Grace--I always liked Gregory Hines--man, he was one cool dude. Baryshnikov--my FAV! That number with those two in White Nights was do DIE for. I get lost in modern dance--it's too out there for me. And you had me at bagpipes, Grace----I LOVE THEM TOO!!! We must be twins separated at birth! ;)
Bwhahaaaa Lin, I love you!
Yep, I wouldn't pimp my daughter out if I had their money - I don't even pimp my daughter out on my blog and I don't have their money. lol
The ring tone on my cell phone is "Amazing Grace" played by some Scottish Military Guard...I had Willie Nelson for a short time but I missed the bagpipes!
I watched and listened. Yuk. That's it-just-YUK.
Yeah I know he's southside Irish-I forgave him for the southside bit.
Most annoying thing ever.... second only to Justin Beiber...
xo Catherine
I made it to 1:20 before I had to stop it. I consider that a small miracle.
Annoying seems to be the catch phrase in "music" today. Do take note that the word music is in parenthesis.
YIKES!
Storm--I just have to wonder why parents allow this to happen to their kids and why do they think it is okay? I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this not good.
Grace--Now that ringtone is much better than "Whip my Hair", Grace. But I'm sure the kids won't think so. ;)
Helene--WHAT??! You do know that Hobbes is southside. ;)
Catherine--Oh, criminy. Don't get me started on that idiot. Have you seen the videos where he walks right into a door because he's flipping his hair?? Sheesh.
Jen--That's what I keep telling my kids, but they just think I sound like my grandpa. Whatever. Their music sucks.
I couldn't agree more, Lin! The music kids listen to these days sucks. Why parents allow their kids to do this is beyond me.
