- You buy candy that you like so if you get no trick-or-treaters, you have a little treat for yourself, or
- You buy candy that you don't like so you aren't tempted to eat it all.
I used to love sitting in those WW meetings, listening to all the old ladies bragging on how they bought Crappy Cardboard or Icky Bars so that they wouldn't be tempted to dig in before the kids, and all I kept thinking was "Yeah, but the kids are just throwing that crap out". I may have even said it one or two times--you know me.
And to those weight-conscience folks who give out pencils, stickers, or pennies--that stuff gets tossed too. Kids want candy, folks--and the good kind. If you are in any doubt on what the "good" kind is--ask any kid in the store, they'll tell you.
Or you can ask me. I happen to have many years of experience digging through my kids' Halloween bucket.

I'm #1. It never makes it to Halloween though.
Let's all sing Thriller for A Marie living across from a cemetery.
Happy Halloween, Lin!
Have a wonderful weekend!
I am #1 for sure! What's weight watchers? LOL!
Today is Saturday and we will be buying the Halloween candy. And yes, my husband only buys what HE likes. So it's peanut butter cups for sure (bleech!)
If you buy the good stuff, there won't be any left over to tempt you because all the kiddos will grab handfuls and you'll run out.
I buy the good stuff - some that I like and some that I don't. This year I bought it early so I wouldn't be stuck with the crappy stuff. And then I hid it in the pantry where it has been tempting me ever since.
My house is a popular stop on the route to excess of sweet treats and tooth rotting. I give out cans of orange and lemon-lime soda. When Halloween passes I have been known to make cafeteria trades w/ the kids--their Milky Ways for my leftover cans of orange soda. hehehehehe
(PS years back I added a pencil with the candy and my girls told me I was turning into the Mr. Feeny of the neighborhood)
I don't get any trick or treaters.
It makes me sad.
I buy what I like, usually chocolate. We don't get as many children as in years past so I always have some left.
My son would like it if he got stickers though.
Happy Halloween!
Yep, we buy the good stuff. I want to be the "cool" house. I buy the trinkets too, but I have a giant cauldron full of stuff, and we let the kids choose 2-3 items based on what they want. We do 5-6 kinds of candy at least, too. :)
I never have any left but I always buy the kind that I like. Not only am I thinking of the kids I'm also thinking of the parents who raid the trick or treat bucket after the kids go to sleep :)
Love the pumpkins! I'm type #3. I don't buy any candy at all because we live in the country, back from the road, and no one comes trick-or-treating here!
Happy Halloween!
We're type #1 and then we shut out the lights and eat all the candy ourselves! LOL Well, okay, we do keep the lights on for a little while. We don't have many kids in the neighborhood so there's always plenty of candy left over.
I must admit ~ I am type #2 ~ but with a twist ~ it's candy that my son has loved every since he was little ~ but I don't. Skittles and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups! I hate them ~ kids love them. :)
Hope you are having a nice weekend Lin!
xo Catherine
I'm a Type 1. I buy A-class candy and let the kiddies have what they want. The kids came last night. Hubby for his own amusement threw in a few Cliff Bars (protein healthy bars that are expensive, btw). Darn if a few kids went "NEAT" and took those!
We don't get trick or treaters by us. This is the first year that I did not buy a single bag of candy.
We have the full size bars at our house, Kit Kats, Smarties, Aero etc. We only get about 20 kids or less as we are in the country. I always buy the good stuff, however I have excellent will power and won't be eating any leftovers. I will leave that job up to the hubby and son! Happy Halloween, Lin!!
Helene--I'm a #1 too and so far, we've only had to buy one replacement bag for Halloween. That's a new record for us!
Veronica--Do they do Halloween by you??
Melodie--While I love WW, there are some that just go there to swap recipes for desserts. ;)
Grace--You don't like peanut butter cups????! You may be losing me on that one, Grace. Who doesn't love those????!
Bumbles--Here's MY theory on why we should buy the good stuff: I'm hoping we get lots of kids and there is none left over because that is good for my waistline. IF I eat it beforehand, I feel guilty taking from the kids and I don't eat too much. AND the calories that I'm imbibing on are quality calories. :) See? We are ALL happy that way. Hooray!
Jodi--I like the soda idea and really, you are giving those kids a workout making them haul a little extra weight on their backs. :) Ixnay the pencil idea, Jodi.
Pricilla--Awwww. But then you don't have to spend the whole day being a slave to your doorbell! I kinda like that idea. I get NOTHING done on Halloween for all the interruptions.
DJ--I buy the chocolate too because we do have a few bars left over as well. We didn't have many kids last year, I wonder how many we'll get this year?? I like the excuse that we are eating the candy "to get rid of it"! ;)
Ann--Right on, Ann! I can tell you, as a parent, I love those people who send us moms and dads home some yummy stuff! Tell me all parents don't dig into the candy!
Sharky--I think I would buy it anyway and just pretend that we might get one kid at my door. ;)
Vanilla--Happy Halloween to you too, pally! Happy Trails!
Beaded Tail--Oh, you are gonna get egged if you don't answer your door!! Our Grace used to love when our kids would come in from trick-or-treating and dump all their candy on the floor. She'd be amongst the kids sniffing and licking all the candy!
Catherine--What is with you and Grace not liking the peanut butter cups???! Dang, I wish you lived in my house--there'd be more for me!
Highway--Yeah, until they ate them, right??! :p nah--kids like that stuff almost better than the candy these days! Good choice.
Lola--I'm almost afraid not to have any candy around. We had around 10 kids last year, so I went low with the candy this year too. But I have some just in case.
Hot Rocks--WOW! I'm coming over to your house!! Full-size bars???! Yahoo!
Lin, I think the kids end of drinking the pop along the way...hauling candy makes little goblins and ghouls parched ;-) Kevin gives bags of cheese popcorn to kids from his police car...not working tonight, so he brought his case of cheese corn home to give away with the pops.
The good kind= peanutbutter cups :) yum... Happy Halloween!
The Halloween spirit seems to be catching on as I see more people hosting halloween parties these days. I wasn't invited to any!! In the past, Halloween was celebrated only among the expatriate community. I wanted to organize one in our condo but the reponse was poor. Costume rentals are expensive and we're all too darn lazy to make our own.
AND (be warned this may be harsh) if you don't have the self-dicipline to stay away from it anyway, then you're not gonna EVER lose weight. We can avoid buying sweets, but we can't avoid what others bring to work, holidays, etc.
I'm the one who buys stuff I don't like -- gum, Smarties, Laffy Taffy, etc.
And then I raid my kid's stuff for the chocolate. And then I hate myself in the morning for gorging on chocolate. A vicious cycle, for sure.
