Maggie and the Cow Candle

Our final marching competition landed, unfortunately, on Sweetest Day. Not that it mattered to most of us, but that didn't stop those love birds, Maggie and Ed, from celebrating.

They pulled up their van to where we were tailgating with the band kids, and Ed opened up the back to start setting up. He pulled out a card table, flowery tablecloth, two comfy folding chairs, and placed the cow candle in the center of the table as his centerpiece.

And while the rest of us just stood and watched, Ed presented Maggie with their table-for-two and his version of Sweetest Day Dinner--even if it was in the parking lot of the University of Illinois stadium. Maggie and Ed went on with their boxed dinner like the rest of us, except theirs was more like fine dining.

I'm not sure what was with the damn cow candle, but it had me cracking up.

"Light the cow, Maggie!" I kept screaming. And we tried, but the wind was working against us and the darn cow just wouldn't light. Damn! So much for ambiance. It was still cute though, that stupid cow candle.

There is just something about Maggie and Ed--there is this unspoken love for each other that is so very apparent to the rest of us. They aren't sappy or overly affectionate--they are just sweet to each other, doing little things like setting out the table and chairs for your best gal.

And while Joe and I love each other, we aren't like that. And for the most part, that is fine with me, but dang it--I was jealous of that darn Maggie's cow candle.

I want one. The candle, not the husband.

And who can blame you? That candle certainly evokes jealousy in me. Who wouldn't want it?

I know the post was all about sweetness and light - but it's the light that seems to be getting the attention. Having lived in Vermont, where all things cow are worshiped for their income potential, I never saw the charm. Having lived next door to cows may having something to do with it - that and the sweet smell of fertilizer, chemical and what-all-else, wafting through your windows on a warm Summer's day....

True story - I am from NYC so I have ridden elephants and camels, petted lions and tigers and seal and walruses. But I never seen a cow - I never thought about milk. Where did it come from? The store of course. After moving to Vermont, I mentioned to my husband that those were very odd and large black and white dogs living down the road - I could see them from the window. He laughed and said "they're cows" I was quite taken aback. Cows were very foreign animals to me.

Forgot the "had" in "But I had never seen a cow"

Yeah, Joe should have taken "Mary Ellen" and propped her on a table for you at the tailgate!

DG--Maggie turned her back for one moment and I had that sucker in my hands. I really did! But I knew she'd be sad, so I put it back. :( Darn.

Helene--But if you had one like Ed, you'd want a husband. They are one of the sweetest couples I know. And I have no idea where he found that darn cow candle!

Vanilla--I had it, Vanilla. I had it in my hands and was gonna snatch it when Maggie wasn't looking, but I chickened out. You can see that Maggie is sort of protective over that cow candle in the photo and I wouldn't want Maggie to be sad about her cow candle.

Grace--That is very scary, Grace! Didn't you have books with cow photos in them or anything??! I like cows. I beep my horn at them when we are driving down roads where I see cows. And what is better than a real cow? A cow candle!!

Jennifer--That cow candle was GREAT! I mean, who's got a cow candle just lying around the house???! Apparently Maggie and Ed! ;)

Betty--Isn't that sweet??! Nothing says love like the cow candle. Too bad we couldn't get it to light. :(

Pricilla--Or a stripey cat candle! That reminds me--the duck and wheel at the end of the block is now "Flamingo and Wheel"! I've GOT to get a photo.

Lola--We would have if we could lift that damn thing! We are trying to ditch Mary Ellen, but it is too heavy to just go around and drop on somebody's porch. Kudos to whoever did it to me!

Now that is just too sweet. I envy couples like that.

Every couple has different dynamics. As long as you know that love abounds in your hearts, that's what matters most. Complementing each others needs, understanding and accepting each others weaknesses will surely deepen and makes the relationship grow. Why am I talking like this and seems so interested with love? LOL

Anyway, I definitely agree that the cow candle is cute! :D

P.S.
Thanks for following up on me. I am doing way better now! So happy here... :D

Now that is some sweet stuff. We're not overly cheesy lovey dovey anymore either, could have something to do with these kids we're in charge of keeping alive...

You are right. That is one envy-building cow. Watch out, or it will getcha! And, I kid you not, my verification word is cheez

Ann--Sigh. Me too.

Chuck--Dang! I shoulda stole that darn cow candle. I had it in my hands....

V7--REally??! No way! That totally looks like a cow!

Catherine--Oh, there are adventures everywhere, Catherine--you just have to watch for them. :) I'm just sad we couldn't get it to light.

June Zach--You are very right--I think every couple has their own relationship that is very different from the next. You are like the Dalai Lama of Love, pally! ;) Who made you so smart???! Glad you are doing better, my friend.

Highway--I wanted it too. I had that beast in my hand, ready to steal it, but then I thought Maggie would either be really sad or mad--neither of which I wanted to do to her. I put it down. :(

Casey--Joe and I were never lovey-dovey, we just aren't that way. And neither are Maggie and Ed, but they are just so very kind to each other. They are so cute together.

Sharky--Hahaha! Cheez--what is with that??! I was just wondering who would have a cow candle just hanging around the house?! It made me laugh.

I love it. I love the candle as well as the sentiment. I do sometimes wish Mike did things like that for me too but you can't have everything.

It looks like one of those butter cows that bakers create for the NY State Fair. Cute!
