If you want something done right......

Every year, some Band Parent videos the season's performance and puts it on YouTube for the kids and parents to see--it's kind of a posterity thing. But this year, for some reason, nobody did it and it sort of bugged me--so I decided to video it myself.

Now, I'm just gonna go on record in saying that I hate videotaping things because I miss out on the actual event, but I stepped it up....for the kids.

So, there I am, at the game with my video recorder, tripod, coat, blanket, and my cool cushion for my butt--loaded down like a freaking pack mule, and I wait for half-time to come. And I wait. and wait. and wait. And I finally come to the conclusion that I really, really hate football--it is really boring and I hate sitting there waiting for half-time. Thank goodness I had my friend, Karen, and her daughter, Sarah, there to wait with me and make me laugh.

Anywho, while I grow tired of waiting, I keep asking Joe where I should videotape. We sort of sit to one side of the stadium and that is not a prime videotaping spot by any means--you gotta be on the 50 yard line if you want to get the whole band. So, I'm debating this whole issue on where I should videotape and when should I go to my ideal spot--but Joe doesn't really care. Figures. He just wants to watch the game and doesn't really care about things like half-time and videotaping. He gets like that when he's watching sports. Sheesh.

So, I'm sitting there, waiting for my big moment and then there is like 3 minutes on the clock--which is my cue to move towards the press box for ideal videotaping.

And when I get there, I end up talking to the folks up there and much to Joe's surprise.....

I end up on the TOP of the press box!!

Not kidding. I set up my lame-ass tripod and outdated camera and proceed to wave to my family and friends like I'm the Queen of England--if she ever stood on top of a press box. I was so scared up there that I could hardly see, but I've got some full-field shots of the band. Okay, so I'm so high up that the band looks like ants---but, I've got the shot!

So, here is my pathetic attempt of capturing the Marching Astros.

Pour yourself another cup of coffee and stick it out until the last 2 minutes--it gets really good at that point--even for you non-marching fans. And oh--Em is one of the 6 featured rifles spinners, just in case you were looking for her.

Do you people realize how high it is to be on TOP of the press box?

You even edited words in there. Look at you go! Love those snappy drum majors too! I liked when they were in that kinda heart shape! They're good, Lin!

Way to go, Astros! You put it in orbit this time.

Nice work, Lin. But I bet you just enjoyed it a bit too much, towering over everyone and all.

That's so cool! I don't get how they remember where they are supposed to be and what note to play all at the same time. It's good that you have it on film so that Em can see it later. You go marching band mama!

They are most excellent. Love the formations and there were parts where it looked like they were gliding not matching. I never could understand either how they keep track of where they are supposed to be going AND play an instrument. ::applause, applause::

You did a really good job and so did the Marching Astros! That was fun to watch!

Like Wow! They are really, really, good!!! I loved the formations. They looked perfect to me. You did a great job videoing them. BTW....I would rather watch marching bands than football any day.:) Y'all must be a bunch of proud parents!

Little band did a fab job! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed!! I must say I was impressed how the fans seemed to have quieted to watch and enjoy the show.

Try getting yourself a Flip UltraHD video camera. I'st small to tote and takes nice video. That's what my spousal unit used to tape our band last weekend.

To solidify my band geekness I did a Youtube search for your field show months ago. Band Geek I know. And proud of it!

Hail to Queen of England!!! Fun video!

Too cool. Love the Queen (you). I can just see that. :-) I'm a fan of the marching bands, just not a fan of football.

Yesterday I told Alex to ask Santa Claus for the Thomas the Train remote he wants. He said "who's Santa Claus?" If I never tell him will he write a tell-all memoir about how I stole his childhood from him once he finds out?

Wow, lucky you! Looks like you have a new job now;)

Well Done Mom!!! But I am a little surprised you didn't put giant arrows pointing out your kid. You obviously don't love them enough ;-)

Impressive, Lin! Way to go! Maybe it's a new career in the making.

They did a fantastic job. You are rightly proud of "your" band

Violet--I was so proud of those darn words! ;) If the video was better, I'd be REALLY proud!

Vanilla--It was scary up there, Vanilla! Joe almost died when he saw where I got myself. Hee! Hee! You'd think he'd expect that by now.

Chocolate--I don't get how they do it either, but they do. And our band stands out because we rarely "stand and play"--we move almost the entire time. Do you know they get out of gym for marching season? I think it is well-earned.

Grace--I like the end when they jump over the legs of the guys kneeling down. I know it is hard to see, but that is cool to see them running. I don't think I could do it!

Beaded Tail--Thanks! I think I'll need better equipment for my new career though. ;)

Jean--I do love being a part of this with my kids. Our band does really well in competitions, especially if they group us by size. It is really hard to compete with bands that are 3 times our size, which is very common. But, we still hold our own in that venue too. It's such a blast!

Mike--Really? I thought I'd lose everyone today. :) Thanks for watching, pally!

Jodi--Our really good show was 2008 at Western Il Univ.--we took Grand Champion that year. We are small, but mighty!

V7--Well, the quality and sound isn't all that great, but the kids who know the show appreciate the attempt. We get higher quality video from the schools we perform at, but I can't load those to YouTube. :(

Helene--I think you can do the Santa thing, but not make it so grossly materialistic that most folks do. My neighbors just did stockings from Santa and everyone was happy. It is a nice childhood memory, Helene, you should do it. It's all about spirit and magic and all that.

Nancy--But like anything else, I need to get some better equipment! And I don't really want to go on the press box again--it was too scary!

Fran's Dad--Aren't they? We somehow pulled that show together and it was beautiful. We are small, but mighty.

Wen--What we don't do for those kids!! Hard to believe it is all over, isn't it? :(

LJ--You are CRAZY! I'm lucky I got the darn words on there! :)

Hot Rocks--Well, I think I need a better camera and a quieter crowd. :) But it was the thought that counts, right?

Pricilla--We are small, but mighty. Surprisingly, we do really well in contests for our size. Our biggest competitor this year was a band of 30 kids, believe it or not! It's amazing what they can do with such little numbers.

oh they are very good. What a great view of them. No matter how entertaining they may be when watching them from the stands it can't beat watching them from above. So brave of you to go to such heights to get the video.

What fun! I almost could feel the cold night air. I can't imagine standing on the top of the press box. The things mothers do for their kids!
