In honor of Christopher Columbus, I'm taking a day or two to go 'splorin. I love being outdoors in the fall, so I'm gonna go get my hands dirty and dig around the garden, move some plants around, and ready the yard for winter. As sad as I am for everything to look so darn barren, I like the idea of "tucking in" the yard for a long winter's nap. The pond has a few more weeks yet to keep running. I'm not ready to turn that waterfall off yet nor say goodnight to my frog friends. I don't think they are ready either, as they are warming themselves in every available sunbeam before the really cold blows in. It's a love/hate kinda thing with fall--I love fall, but I really dread the impending winter.
Happy Columbus Day, pallies. May this holiday find you exploring your own surroundings. Go outside and see the colors change. Enjoy the falling leaves and crisp apples that are so bountiful this time of year. Embrace the earth and breathe deep the sweet smells of autumn.

--love fall, dread impending winter. Ditto. 86 degrees today. What's up with that? Again, love it.
I have a love/hate kinda thing with fall too since tax season follows it. That dread sort of takes the joy out of the last few months of the year. But, every day is one day closer to spring!
Nicely said there, Lin!
I live in the tropics so I could not relate to autumn or winter.
There are lots of things to explore. What we all need is to open our eyes and look around. :D
I did some 'splorin' in my garden/jungle yesterday and after taking a sickle and scythe to the underbrush, found a small volunteer rose bush growing near my bee balm. Huh! I also found three (3) bacon wrappers. Weird.
Are you all really off for Columbus Day--from work and school?
I got a Fall surprise when I walked out in the yard this A-M...the leaves started to drop while I slept. Love fallen leaves, HATE raking.
Enjoy your days of "splorin"!
I cleaned up most of the garden yesterday. I don't have Monday off. Or ever, really. Thank God for weekends.
Hope winter goes as fast as summer did.
We don't have any of that stuff here ::sigh::
Grace looks beautiful! I do love a grey cat:) I'm hoping to get to a Maize maze this fall- doesn't happen every year, but sure puts you in the mood! The best part is when it's over you can buy all of the fall foods like apple butter in their store:)
I can relate to the love/hate thing. Happy exploring, I'll be off to work and I would rather not be exploring there :)
Yup, the colors are starting to develop here nicely. Have fun!
I've already done way too much 'splorin for this holiday weekend. You wouldn't believe where I've been.
I love your idea of tucking in the yard and garden for winter instead of just thinking of it as the death... Enjoy!
Sigh, I love fall too! But you said it way purtier
Vanilla--Good camping weather!
Beaded Tail--Live for today, pally. Don't look ahead!
June Zach--I think I would miss autumn and winter because I like the changes. Have you ever seen the leaves change colors? I think you would like it if you did--it is lovely.
JD--Hahaha! I love the bacon wrappers! Sounds like somebody's been in the garbage! ;) I've been cleaning up the yard every single day this past week--the weather has been GREAT for that!
Jodi--We took off to go see Colin at school. It was nice a day off to finally go see him!
Helene--I don't get paid if I don't go in, but I figured I needed a day off to get some things done and to go see Colin. It was a nice break from the madness here. I've been working on the gardens all week!
Grace--What? Leaves?? or changing colors? :(
Nancy--I love fall and roadside stands with pumpkins and gourds and stuff. I need a road trip every fall to enjoy all that good stuff.
Ann--Ugh. Work. I needed a day off from that. Of course I don't get paid, but sometimes you need a break. :)
Sharky--The colors just started and they are going fast now. I love the reds and oranges. :)
Lola--Uh oh. Is that a good thing??
Stephanie--Well, it is sort of just sleeping, right? I really don't like shutting down the pond--then I worry about my frogs for the whole winter.
Tracy--:) I love the colors of this time of year. And the smells. But I don't always like what follows.
Hope sweet kitty had a lovely weekend of exploring! :)
xo Catherine
I hope you enjoyed your day of exploring. Well, I swept my stoop today and the kids drew on it and the driveway with sidewalk chalk. Does that count as tucking in for the winter? :-)
I think I would hate closing do. That has to be a lot of work... it's beautiful and admire the patience you have with doing such a great job every season.
I have to say I'm enjoying these photos of Grace in all of her elegance. Hey, will she sit on your lap and let you pet her?
My graceful cat, Chloe, refused to sit in my lap or on the couch cushion next to me. She would sit on the back of the couch close to my head so I could pet her, but she always needed a quick escape route.
Catherine--I have two very crabby kitties because as we ran, they had to be in the house. That does not make them very happy.
Petula--It does count. It is taking advantage of the warm weather before the cold comes. It's nice to enjoy the outdoors while you can and have that last "goodbye".
CG--Grace is very much like your Chloe--she needs an escape route. But every single morning, girlfriend comes into the bathroom with me and sits on my lap, turns over and gives her belly to me to rub. I guess that closed door means she can let her guard down--for a total of 3 minutes. I don't expect much more than that from her.
You know what I love about you, Lin?
Your joie de vivre is infectious. You always find pleasure in the simplest things. Good for you, pally!
