Red Box Trauma

We spent the past two days cleaning up the yard and the gardens, clipping back spent blooms, and splitting perennials. It's good to be done with summer and yard work, but then again, I'm gonna miss my frogs singing and the hydrangea blooming.

After a long day of working in the yard, Saturday night brought us to the line at the local Red Box. Red Box is the movie rental machine at the local Walgreens, if you aren't familiar with it. It's kind of luck-of-the-draw renting, leaving us with whatever was left after hours of folks tapping that machine for $1 movie rentals before we got there. But it's only $1 and so we go, figuring whatever we get can't be that bad.

Yeah/no.

Being that the machine is outside, most cars pull up and park right by the machine. Saturday was no different and there was already a car there choosing their movie. We got out just to see what they had and to wait for our turn right after a mom and two little boys finished.

Mom was sitting in the car, waiting for these two kids (around 5 and 6 years of age) to decide what to get and to run her credit card through the machine. And while we were chatting about what to get, one of the kids decides he's gonna help us.

So, he's pointing out this movie or that--mostly things like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or "Cats and Dogs"--all pretty child-friendly fare. And when I point out Huckle from some kid movie, the kid scrunches his face up and shakes his head "no". Apparently it's too babyish for homeboy, and he points to a movie and yells "You GOTTA get 'Kick Ass'" and he says "ass" and everything.

I'm trying to be real cool and I tell him, "No way, kid! That's got a curse word and you shouldn't be saying stuff like that!" and he just looks at me. And his mom is right there and she doesn't blink an eye. So, I was telling this kid that he shouldn't be using words like that and I'm not getting that movie because I don't like curse words (yeah, right) and that movie looks awful anyway. But he kept insisting and finally he gave up and his mom screamed for him to get in the car, which he did, and we were left there with the Red Box machine and no idea what to rent.

The four of us (Colin, Emma, me, and Em's friend, Lauren) stood there debating which movie to get, which was hard because Lauren saw like all of them, and then someone else pulled up and we had to pick something quick. And before we knew it, we had "Kick Ass" in our hands and we were all laughing because some 5-year old told us to rent this movie.

Which was our first mistake.

I'm just gonna tell you that this movie traumatized me. It was the most violent, graphic, and horrible movie EVER. It was meant to be funny, I guess, but I was so freaked out by the scenes of an 11-year old girl slaughtering folks left and right, dropping f-bombs like no tomorrow, and getting punched in the face in the end. It was so horribly disturbing that I kept walking out of the room. And all that I kept thinking was that mom let her 5-year old watch this crap.

I'm not sure what is scarier--that he watched it, that he recommended this to me, that his mom let him watch it, or that I actually sat there and watched it too.

That's the last time I ask a 5-year old Roger Ebert for a movie suggestion. Sheesh.

And that tells you everything you need to know about why after these kids shoot people their moms speak out saying "but my son is a GOOD boy!". Its a Chicago thing.

What is scarier? You list four equally scary concepts. Sheesh (as you say).

This child was only 5 years old? Oh man...no wonder I look at these little kids running around nowdays and think, "Good Lord...there is the future of our Country! Help Us Dear God!" Seriously!! That Mom needs to be smacked upside the head!

Never heard of the movie but I'm just about as astounded as you are the kid was saying curse words and the mother didn't do a thing about it. Makes you wonder sometimes when you will be seeing that same kid on the news cuz he did something wrong. Never heard of that movie but it is definitely something I don't have an interest in seeing for sure now. Usually the red boxes have good movies in them.

Isn't it amazing what is considered 'entertaining' now a days. Did you ever watch The Bugs Bunny Show? I remember when they had to start editing the parts where the coyote got squished or Elmer Fudd shot Daffy Duck because it was deemed 'to violent'. Now, the crap they show on TV makes what was edited out of the old shows as laughable.

And the movies? Where does one start on the subject.

But, at least the movies are rated. Try figuring out what is in the music young kids are listening to. There's no regulations on having to put 'parental advisories' on the cd covers. Some artists choose to, some don't. When my son was 15 - 16 yrs old I ended up taking away 6 of his CDs. 4 he got back when he was 18, and the other 2, I told him he didn't get back until he moved away from home. He's still here ~ the CDs aren't. Haha!

Don't parents know how to say 'no' anymore? It's all very disturbing.

Well I can go on and on about this subject as it greatly disturbs me... can you tell??? :)

Ok ~ enough said.
Have a Happy Day Lin!

Funny, Himself brought that same movie home from the Redbox...and it went right back without ever being popped out of the case, because before we watched it he read me reviews (including Roger Ebert's) and I said, there is no way I'm watching this movie. Even the people who liked it talked about how violent it was.

You're not seriously closing up the pond already? It seems it was just a few weeks ago that we were all talking about tadpoles - now that is sad.

Your story about the kid and the movie - seems there is no happy medium with parenting - either they are over involved or not involved - either way the kid loses!

Now that's disturbing . . .

That mother should be ashamed of herself.

omg, thats horrible.

its a lot like the video games, even though just saying that makes me sound like a geezer and I know it but its true.

I'm not sure which sounds worse, the movie or the fact that a mother would let a 5 year old watch something like that. All I can think is he'll probably grow up to be a career criminal.

O.K. 1. YES, very shameful on her part. But, have you noticed how movie ratings all of the sudden don't have the same meaning as they used to? That's not to mention...there were only 2 G movies that came out last year. 2! No selection for the kiddies anyway.

2. Anything my boyfriend likes I know will suck. He had wonderful things to say about this movie. Now it is confirmed: I will die having never seen it. His taste is really lame.

3. Red Box really isn't a magic cure all is it? I was excited when it first came out; it was quick and easy and you always got what you wanted. BUT...now that there's not even blockbusters as a back up, you can NEVER get what you want at red box and end up having to rent from the 17 movies that are popular enough to be in it, but unpopular enough to be left as a choice....

Oh, Lin, you are too funny. I think the worse part is him recommending it. I would never let my younger kids watch this. Well, I guess I am disturbed because I actually enjoyed the movie. I did have to cover my eyes a few times and winced when the little one got him and the first time she cursed. It was surprising, but I must be becoming too accustomed to the craziness of this day and time.

Oh, BTW, it's been awhile since I annoyed you so I thought I'd go ahead and tag you with a meme. :-D ... Love ya! LOL

I went to the drive-in last night saw Takers and Lottery Ticket--dumbest movies ever! (Advance warning for when they come to Red Box and try to steal your dollar.) Both equally 17 and up movies. You wouldn't believe the number of kids aged 3-11 that were eyes glued to the screen. I'm with you pally, what are parents thinking these days?!

That's pretty sad of that mom. Not my kid, that's for sure. What we watch is when the kiddo is asleep!

I agree with you. I'm just not in favor of freedom of speech or movie selection for 5-year-olds.

I can't believe she approved that movie choice. Yowza! I mean I'm not into sheltering my kids until they're 18 or anything, but that is way too young!

You should ask me for movie suggestion Lin :)

OMG...I CANNOT believe that a 5 year old was allowed to watch a show like that! The parents need their heads examined! We are still really strict on what our 12 yr old watches. You know I am not a prude, but in some of the movies these days the language is just insane! I mean its ok to let out the odd swear word when called for, but I am finding that some are just crude for no reason whatsoever. Anyhow, I enjoyed your story, and laughed at the fact that you ended up choosing the suggested movie!
