I Love Hobbes Thursday - The Pacifist

Joe was out grilling dinner when he noticed that Hobbes was a tad too interested in the garden back by the fence. Okay, so hostas are fab for a shady nap on a hot summer afternoon, but homeboy was digging around and looking for something with way too much intensity.

Typical of the dad, Joe let him alone until Hobbes re-appeared with a new gray fuzzy mustache--the kind with big ears and a long tail.

Hobbes carefully carried his new-found treasure to the grass and gently set it down to admire it. He lie down across from his new friend, tucked his arms under his chest, and settled in to just watch what the baby field mouse was gonna do next.

Joe picked up Hobbes and called to us, knowing that Em and I are suckers for those cute little things whose ears are almost bigger than they are. And while we came running, the poor wee thing just sat there, breathing heavy, scared to death of the giant orange ottoman that could have crushed him if he so chose.

We all ooohed and ahhhhed over the wet-with-spit fuzzball and then Joe gently guided him back to the garden, where he scurried under the fence to safety. Hobbes was in the house at this time, getting a drink and something to eat while wondering what all the fuss was about.

When he was finally let back out, poor Hobbes went right to the spot where he had left his mouse, confused as to what happened to his friend. He looked and sniffed all around, knowing that he had just left him right there, and now he was gone. It was like he was thinking "I know I left him here somewhere...". And all the while, we just chuckled.

I wonder if he knows that he is supposed to kill the mouse? Sigh. That's my Hobbes. Making friends with the enemy.

When I grow up I wanna be just like Hobbes! Because right now I have an enemy list and am plotting revenge and....you get the idea.

You took his new friend away? Awww.

My cat got out out on the loose last summer, and within an hour delivered two field mice to our back balcony door....unfortunately, ours were not in the condition that Hobbes left his in, and I had a nice mess to clean up!

Awwww. It breaks my heart when they go looking for what they left riiiiight there... Same happens with Pimp when I save a lizard or bug from him "playing" with it.

Hobbes is a lover not a fighter! So sweet he didn't hurt the baby mouse! We just love Hobbes!

My cat Fuzzy is a pacifist, too. Maybe they have Swiss blood???

I had a cat years ago that brought home all kinds of little fuzzy creatures to play with in the yard.

awwww! lol I can only imagine the chaos that would have happened had it been my zoo.

What a nice cat Hobbes is! That was pretty mean to take away his friend and make him think he's losing his marbles.

Cats often play with the mouse a long time before they kill them. You have let one little mouse live a bit longer.

Heze used to just catch things and mouthe them until they occasionally died of trauma or drowned in spit.

Helene--I'm not sure the mouse wanted to be his friend back, Helene, so we had to intervene. Do I need to intervene by you too???

Daisy--He just couldn't resist putting his mouth on that guy, Daisy. I think boys are that way. ;)

Hot Rocks--Ewwwww! I like 'em alive--not dismantled. ICK!

A.Marie--They were sort of cute together, but I knew I was pushing my luck if I let them "play" any longer.

Phyl--Oh, he was very cute! His little ears were bigger than he was! I'm glad Hobbes didn't kill him.

Tracy--I wanted to get a photo, but I knew I was pushing my luck with those two. I think that mouse is thanking me today.

Cute--It was so funny to see him looking for it--like it was gonna stay right where he left it! I was cracking up!

Beaded Tail--Didn't hurt him--just got him a little wet with cat spit. Poor thing!

Rebecca--I'm thinking that if we caught him any later, that poor mouse would have died from fright. I'm actually surprised Hobbes caught the thing!

Ann--Hobbes and Grace are pretty good (bad?) at not catching things. Either they are lousy hunters or they aren't hungry. I'm thinking the latter.

Storm--Hahaha! That mouse wouldn't stand a chance! I did quickly close the cat door so he didn't bring his little friend inside!

Karen--Oh, that little mouse's heart was POUNDING! I felt so bad for it--I'm surprised it didn't have a little mouse heart attack!

Marilynne--I think you are right and we were pushing our luck as it was. I'm surprised that A) he didn't bring that thing in the cat door B) that the mouse didn't die of fright or C) that Hobbes would kill it playing with it.

Hahaha... poor Hobbes!

If it was my dad's cat back home that mouse wouldn't stand a chance. His head would be somewhere in the drain and his guts... errr... you get the picture, not a pretty sight!:(

That was his friend!! How cute Hobbes is!

My Sam (dog) loves to lick bugs, especially beetles. He'll lick it and then wait for it to crawl around. He never eats them. I think he thinks that they are his friends too.

It's so nice to meet you, and so kind of you to stop by and give such great pointers on recognizing Cardiomyopathy. It's good to know there are signs we can look for, as Rumblemum is a bit worried for me too and it's good to have some symptoms to watch for.

Well...you know...it's nice to make friends ~ even with those we are not 'supposed' to be getting along with! :)

Mine would have shred the mouse.
And left me the intestines.

Hobbes is such a sweet boy :)

Nessa--Yeah, Hobbes is NOT a hunter--thank goodness!

Chocolate--Hobbes does that too--he licks everyone! What is with that???

Violet--It was funny how carefully he was carrying the little guy. It was so funny!

DG--I'm not sure what would have happened if we left him, but somehow I think a mouse heart attack would have happened before murder.

Inigo and Rumblepurr--Oh, pally, I'm am SO feeling for you! My heart broke when I read your story. I am saying prayers that things improve.

Grace--No kidding. And to think I trapped raccoons! I guess this little guy is a menace on a much smaller scale.

Catherine--I wish I would have gotten his photo, but I wasn't pushing my luck. There are times when I wish I had my camera around my neck!

Pricilla--Ewwww! I guess Hobbes has it too good--he prefers store bought cat food. :)

Stephanie--He is--but I still wouldn't kiss him for a few days. ;)

It's funny when you see their instincts come out. I mean, you are a fat well fed cat with no need for a mouse to eat, but they still just can't resist a good find!

Lin said...

Nancy--It counts as a workout, doesn't it?? :)
