I found a dead goldfinch out in the yard yesterday. Being that they are dangerously hanging out on the low-to-the-ground dried seed heads of the cone-flowers, I knew somebody was gonna get it one of these days. Those yellow birdies are just so enticing.
I pointed the dead bird out to a certain Stripey Somebody, but he played it off like he'd never seen it before. There was the initial "Oh my, what do you have there, Mom" sniff and then he just walked away, showing no interest whatsoever.
I called after him, "I know who got this birdy, Hobbes", but he showed no remorse. "Funny how a little yummy yellow bird just happened to fall from the sky, Mister."
And so, the summer ends like it started---with adventures in the yard.
Summer goes too fast, doesn't it?

Stop! I can't handle the idea of being bundled in my nanook while my flip-flops rest in the closest.
As for the "kill" finding...Uli took a rest at our house ever since she ate a frog last week. Nothing like a bitter taste of toxins that makes an animal foam at the mouth to rid our yard of the "kill" findings.
Here's hoping Hobbes realizes his kitty vittles in the bowl are more yummy.
Hobbes, you are smart to feign innocence regarding the yellow birdie.
ps: "feign" is a funny word.
huh, cats must be different than dogs in that respect. When my dog kills something she proudly drops it at my feet saying here mom look what I got for you.
I can just imagine Hobbes looking it the bird in your hand and saying "Geesh Mom, if I wanted to eat it I already would have.."!!!!
Jodi--Ewwww! Uli needs to get a clue on those frogs. You'd think after one or two, she'd wake up and realize they aren't so yummy afterall. I guess the thrill of the hunt is just too tempting, eh?
Daisy--He's an "actor", Daisy. And a darn good one. "Phoney Baloney" is a good word too--for Hobbes, anyway.
blueyes--Cats do that too sometimes, except I think he knows that I would yell at him. He caught it for sport--not as a special gift for me. For that, I am thankful. :)
Oh it zips by so fast! It is supposed to get down to -5c (23F) tonight ~ middle of September ~ how dreadful! I'm glad Hobbes is soaking up the last bit of summer sun.
Have a terrific Thursday Lin!
xo Catherine
Hobbes is one heck of a smart cat! :D
Goode ole Hobbes pleads Not Guilty your honor.
My cat Sophie used to proudly bring mice she captured and drop them in front of me, as if to say "look what I got for you! Aren't you proud?" And I was all ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Cats are so funny. They want you to notice what they've done when you're busy but if you DO notice it after it's happened they act like you're crazy. Geez...
Colby likes to try and catch birds through the window. I don't think he'd know what to do with one if he did manage to catch it, though.
Here's to a loooong autumn before the cold of winter.
Cheers!
Jen
I doubt that Hobbes had anything to do with it. I'm sure that the guilty party was maybe a left over from the group of bandits that was attacking the fish pond.
Nope, it doesn't go fast enough - need to take it off the calendar.
I am surprised he didn't gift you with it....I was gifted with a pocket gopher yesterday.
Lucky me
He looks so happy out in his yard! I wish I could let my cats out to play. Cats here don't live very long if they get out. Another reason I want to move to the country!
Awh, I would be enjoying myself too! Too bad we don't have a yard:( Have fun Hobbes!!!
I tawt I taw puddy tat...I did... I did taw a puddy tat!
( Watch out all small yellow birds!)
Hobbes is innocent until proven guilty! We don't think he deaded that birdy so it must have just had a heart attack while flying over your yard. Yep, that's what happened.
I thought you were going to say "ends like it started- with dead bodies in the yard" Wasn't there a dead frog or fish or something?
Melodie--I think that is EXACTLY what he was thinking! Like I was lucky he didn't eat it. Sheesh.
Catherine--It's chilly here, but not that chilly! I like it cool because Hobbes gets all cuddly. :)
Nessa--He's quite the actor, Nessa.
Chuck--No kidding!
Lola--I think Hobbes knows I'm not gonna be happy so he doesn't try the "gift" thing. Thank goodness! I've had cats do that before too.
Jen--I think you've nailed it! It's all on their terms, isn't it? I'm guessing this goldfinch was either sick or old--otherwise I don't think Hobbes could have caught it. He's not that good.
Ann--That's a story for tomorrow, Ann. I found another 'guilty party' the other night. Sigh.
Grace--I don't like the heat and humidity, but I do like the outside time of summer. I also like the long days.
Pricilla--Ewwwwww. Aren't you a lucky gal?!
DJ--Our kitties only go out when we are home and watching them. They stick around, but that doesn't mean they don't get sick or hurt from being out there. It's just too hard to keep them in with all of us going in and out all the time. It's a hard call.
Nancy--Hobbes LOVES the yard and all of the adventures waiting for him out there. His favorite thing to do is to fall asleep under the hostas.
Hot Rocks--Hahaha! Oh, I felt so bad for the little thing!
Beaded Tail--Yep! A little birdie heart attack! Well, actually, unless your kitty is a good hunter (which Hobbes isn't, really) they don't always catch birds unless they are old or sick. Well, that's what I tell myself anyway. I think this is only his second birdie that he has caught in his lifetime.
Summer goes waaaaay too fast. But I'm over it. Fall is my favorite time of year. And after the summer from hell (it was soooo hot) we just endured, I'm not missing it at all.
BTW, Hobbes is just too cute!
LOL! I'm sure he's innocent.
Yup, the summer does pass by quickly.
I just talked about yellow birds with my office mate. Yellow Big Bird from Sesame Street. I think Hobbes would love to hear our opinion...
Roschelle--There are things about summer that I like--the longer days, sitting in the yard, enjoying the pond. But then there is that blasted heat! Ugh. I'm with you on not liking that part.
Petula--Oh, he just looks innocent, Petula. Don't fall for his lies!
V7--I think he would like to take a swipe at Big Bird too if given the chance!
One of my dogs used to get birds and then throw it up in the air and catch it... over and over. sigh.
I love Hobbes. I've been out back every day knowing winter is coming.
