Dang, the Dalai Lama is soooo right!

This bad boy is hot off my Dalai Lama Page-a-day calendar: (The quote, not the photo, silly!)

"So if you're looking for work and have a choice of a job, choose a job that allows the opportunity for some creativity, and for spending time with your family. Even if it means less pay, personally I think it is better to choose work that is less demanding, that gives you greater freedom, more time to be with your family, or to do other activities, read, engage in cultural activities, or just play. I think that is best."
--Dalai Lama
Wow. What is with that dude??! Gees, he's just so spot on!

It's funny because when I read this, I thought "Gees, this is so ME!". And then Joe read it and he says "Hey, Lin! Did you read the Dalai Lama today? It is sooo ME!". Yeah, no kidding--we are in this together, aren't we?

I was thinking today on how work is tough these days, how you have to do more for less just to keep your job. And how stressed out folks are--being either employed or unemployed.

We try to keep perspective here--remembering what we are working for. Work is so that we can afford to have a LIFE--not to make work our life. Funny how we all know those who have no idea what that means.

My friend Wendy has this on her office wall: "Don't get so busy making a living that you forget to have a life". I like that one too. Why is it that we need reminders to not get so absorbed in working? Why do we have to make actual appointments for stopping the madness to just enjoy?

And tell me, how does the Dalai Lama know all about this stuff?

So true,so true! The Dalai Lama is a very wise man indeed! I am not for sure, but doesn't he believe in reincarnation? Maybe he has the wisdom of many lifetimes...

For some people making a living is having a life! I miss working and being useful and having fun and learning new stuff, and truth be told, I miss being important.

The Dalai Lama is right?! You are selling yourself short-- YOU are right! Haven't you been blogging this very thing for years now?!

As a matter of fact, it could very well be that the Dalai Lama has a calendar full of wise quotes from bloggers, and there's one by Lin telling her readers to ditch the rat race and enjoy the froggies in the pond...

I think that is best, too, Mr. Lama.

Believe it or not, I actually know a guy named Mr. Lama and his outlook ain't even close to Dalai's.

Sage advice for sure. I remember when a friend confided that he hated his job. He said it was sucking the life out of him. I asked him why he didn't find something else. His answer, "I couldn't do that!" He stuck with it another 25 years and then retired from that federal job.

Well I'll be off to work here soon, where I have more work and less hours than last year...but when the bell rings I'll follow the Dalai Lama's genuis words-- I come home to spend more time with my family. Even if the teenagers are driving me batty these days. ;-)

Which is why in spite of not really having enough money to do so we retired early when I got sick. So we would have a life together...

Because he's asian. And to stereotype, (but appropriately, politely, and accurately of course) Eastern ideas are way much more intuitive than Western ones. They beat us at everything, in every way philosophically.

Ok, and then there's the Italians. Have you seen Eat, Pray, Love? If not, see it! The Italian section is all about becoming practiced in doing nothing, just enjoying:)

I would gladly spend less time working and more time enjoying life if it wasn't for those darn creditors who insist I pay my mortgage and car payment in a timely manner

That is just so me too! As a CPA I used to work 2400 hours a year which is expected but now am down to 1600 plus work from home. Sure I took a pay cut but I'm so much happier! My boss on the other hand, work is her life 7 days a week. I really like that saying your friend Wendy has too!

Mike--Really?? You don't like the Dalai Lama???? I like his laugh.

Melodie--I think he makes some really good points. I keep a stack of his quotes in my desk--and I refer to them quite often. I'm not sure about the reincarnation thing--I'm gonna have to look into that.

Grace--I like the interactions of working, but it is not my life. I can see how it is for some folks, but I think it is important to keep a healthy balance. I think you are important, Grace. :)

Rebecca--I like when someone with a "name" says what I am feeling--it sort of gives me credence for the way I live. I will never be rich, but I will be happy. :)Thanks, pally. Those were nice words today.

CG--I imagine lots of folks think the same thing you do about that Mr. Lama and he is probably really tired of the jokes. That name would be a burden, I bet.

Chuck--Oh, man. I don't understand being that unhappy for that long! For what??? Money? Not worth it. I think you can strike a balance with work and home, but to be miserable isn't good.

Jodi--Oh, home isn't all that dreamy here all the time either. But I will always make it a priority over working if I can. I do a good job when I am at work, but like I tell my boss--work is work, home is my haven.

Pricilla--Right on, pally! That's what I am talking about. I work so that I can have a nice life away from work.

Nancy--But what if you don't like Italian food? Everyone drools about that part of the book, but honestly, I don't like Italian food. I haven't read the book because I think that whole part would lose me. Do they talk a lot about pasta???

Ann--I have the same creditors and now I have a very expensive college bill to add to that. But that said, I work to pay for that, but it doesn't own me. I disconnect big time when I am away from work--don't even think about it.

Beaded Tail--There you go! That is making a life outside of your career and your job. Yes, I will never be rich, but I will not be at a loss for rich memories in my old age either!

So funny... I literally JUST had a conversation about this with my mother. Well, maybe not exactly about this, but the idea was the same. You know what I mean. ;)

Cute--It's funny that we have to keep reminding ourselves this, isn't it? Especially when I look at my checkbook or bank account--I have to remember why we don't have a boat-load of cash. We made choices as a family to BE a family and not career people.

V7--The Dalai Lama sent me that coat to remember to chill a bit. :) Wanna borrow it???

Tracy--I just bought a new black purse tonight and I thought of you right away. I kept thinking "Will Tracy love this???" when I bought it. :)

I STILL don't like my job. I like I have no co-workers except 89 yo grandpa. I like I have the office to myself most days except for him. I like that I am home by 430 every day.
