Positive Polly and her tomato plant

Okay, who's the joker who was switching labels on the tomato plants at the garden center?

I spent weeks waiting for these tiny things to bloom into giant-sized juicy red tomatoes, only to find that they are actually cherry tomatoes. Ugh.

I plant one tomato plant each summer. One. As in there is only one plant to provide me with an over-abundance of ripe fruit at the end of the season. There is just enough tomatoes to feed the family BLT's until they are weary of them, to cut and serve fresh on the table, to make salsa out of, and to freeze for winter recipes. I learned the hard way--you really only need one tomato plant for our family.

So, I bought the one plant that we need this spring and stuck that bad boy in the ground. And I soon realized that we are not going to be overrun with giant juicy tomatoes--but overwhelmed with a cabillion cherry tomatoes that nobody likes. I'm cursing whoever the knucklehead is that stuck the wrong label in my tomato plant at the store. Idiot.

But being that joyful optimist that I am (not), I'm not letting it get me down. As life hands me lemons, I'm making lemonade. Well, actually I'm making teeny tiny salsa and wee bruschetta. Sure, I'm nearly cutting my fingertips off trying to chop up cherry tomatoes, but I'm not gonna let that plant win--I'm determined that I'm gonna figure out how I can make BLT's that are 2 inches in diameter.

And don't tell me they taste different than those larger varieties.....I'm making lemonade here, people.

Guess you will have to make a trip tot he farmers market for your big tomatoes! :(

Have a Happy Friday Lin!

You could be rich! If a woman get can millions for burning her tongue on hot coffee...just think how you and your family have been emotionally damaged this summer by tiny tomatoes...yep..mislabeling tomatoes = emotional damage......you need a good lawyer, lol!

wee bruschetta---you made me have tears from laughing.

Um no need to call me idiot now...Ok I haven't but while roaming the aisles of plants months ago I mentioned to a friend wouldn't it be cute to switch all these nice little label sticks so no one knew what they had? An NO! I am NOT the one who put the goose on your doorstep!!!
I ended up with 35 tomato plants and not one cherry one. If it makes you feel any better, some of them didn't grow much and have no tomatoes on them.

Two inch BLTs? I'd be laughing, but it seems your life is just fraught with frustrations.

For me? The mislabelled sweet peppers that turned out to be serranos. Which I like, but BBBH hates them.

The only way to eat those things is like they're gum drops. Put 'em in a bowl and pop 'em in your mouth.

They are tasty that way.

I agree, cherry tomatoes are for snacking... or salads. You'll be surprised, fresh grown cherry tomatoes are wonderful.

We have cherry tomatoes growing just outside the back door. Just pop out and get a few to cut in half and drop in a fresh salad. Yum! The big ones are going like crazy out in the garden. Warm weather and plenty of moisture have all the plants growing like crazy this year.

Sorry about the mix up. I've watched people in various stores drop something into the cart, walk a few steps, change their mind and place the item on the nearest or handiest shelf. Do you reckon?

Cherry tomoato recipe: on a skewer string cherry tomoato, hunk of fresh mozzerella, fresh basil, black olive (if you hate'm leave it off), repeat pattern, then drizzle with olive oil. Mmmmmm, yum!

There you have it "lemonade".

: ) Oh cherry tomatoes...
There's always salad too! Cherry tomatoes are pretty easy to throw on salad.

2 inch BLTs — that would be hilarious, you could buy one of those really tiny fancy loaves of bread that they use for wine & cheese.

a friend of mine planted a grape tomato plant and she said it is giving her tomatoes ONE at a time...lol

I happen to like home grown cherry tomatoes. Plus there is no waste - a big tomato for 2 people is too much. Love the little baby tomatoes!

But honey, for lemonade - you should really use lemons. Using tomatoes makes it, I don't know - tomato sauce? tomato juice or maybe with a touch of vodka, a Bloody Mary???

Teeny tiny salsa, wee bruschetta, 2 inch diameter BLTs - oh you are just a hoot! You made me laugh so hard today!

You can make the BEST marmalade out of cherry tomatos. Course that would mean dragging out pots and pans, cutting up oranges and lemons and boiling those little buggers up in 20 pounds of sugar, but darned it's sooo good. Plus then you could share your tomatos with all your bloggie pals.

Have a good safe non-boating weekend.

Oh don't feel bad - I had the same thing happen to me this year! I have all these itty bitties about to turn now. So much for a nice stash of tomatoes.

Catherine--Yeah, we like the first 2000 and then they get kinda tiresome. Now, I'm just crabby about the whole thing. Look out Farmer's Market!

Melodie--Or I can just get that porch goose to roll on them and we'd have spaghetti sauce. ;)

Helene--Aha! It was YOU! ;) You are going to get a goose on your porch for your penance.

Vanilla--We've had the pepper issue in the past, but we didn't count on those as much as we did the tomatoes. I'm just gonna have to tap my tomato creativity now. No frustrations, just adventures, pally. :)

CG--Okay, so that is yummy for like the first 1000 or so....now, not so yummy anymore. Now that damn plant just mocks me.

Highway--I don't want tomatoes for snacking or salads! I WANT BIG TOMATOES! Arrrrggghhhhh! :0

Chuck--It's just so unfair, Chuck. I don't like salads and so it just seems to mock me. And as for those "droppers"--they are retail's worst nightmare. Especially when it comes to grocery stores.

Jodi--Okay, I tried your recipe tonight and I have to admit it was delicious. Problem is that I can make about 10,000 skewers. Perhaps we can sell them with bandwiches???!

Sarah--I don't like salads and that is just too easy. I like the adventure of trying to figure out what I can do with these silly things. I love your idea of mini-bread for the mini BLTs. Brilliant!!

Ann--Oh, now THAT would be worse! It sounds like that plant is just messin' with your friend. I'd have to rip that sucker out.

Grace--Oh, I LOVE the idea of Bloody Mary's!! You are my kinda gal, Grace! Would you care for one while I'm pouring?

Beaded Tail--And I'm not even joking! I really did make salsa and bruschetta with those darn things! I am one determined woman.

Ozark--Oh, I love the non-boating part. Yeah, not gonna do that this weekend. Whew! I never tried making marmalade. I'll bet I'd use up those suckers FAST!

Storm--You and I need to mix up some Bloody Mary's (Grace's idea) with those suckers, sit back, and trash talk those label switchers. Gees, this just ruins my summer recipes.

I love cherry tomatoes on my salad.
LOL about the bruschetta!

Have a wonderful weekend, Lin!

I'm a Roma person myself. That would bother me too.

I bought a mislabeled tree once and it turned out to be an apple tree. You should see the apple mess in my back yard.

Love the idea of 2-inch BLT's! Perhaps someone somewhere bought what he thought was going to be a big pig and it turned out to be a very tiny pig instead! You could get together and start your tiny restaurant empire!

Pricilla said...

They do make an excellent sauce 'cause they are so sweet.
So sorry.

Lin said...

Veronica--Yeah, I like the first 300 or so, but then they get old real fast. I've got to start being creative with those darn things!

Harriet--Is that a good mistake or a bad one?? We had an apple tree, but it was awful. We cut it down because of the mess.

Betty--It's gonna be the hottest ticket in town! Can you imagine all the dishes being tiny???! I'm gonna make a FORTUNE!!

Pricilla--Really??! I may get to that point. I wonder how many it takes to make some sauce? Thanks for the idea. ;)

Haha...Ok, so I guess you do only plant one then, not 18 thousand. But still. I actually agree with the kids...don't really like the cherry tomatoes either. They do taste different. But perhaps finger foods will become a new summer tradition in your household?
