And while I stood there telling those beastly murderers to beat it, they just sort of stood there and looked at me like they were thinking "Yeah, yeah, lady. What time's the buffet?". That's not a good sign--they aren't the least bit scared of me. I poured some extra coyote pee all around the pond that night--for good measure. I don't think it's gonna change anything, but it made me feel better for the moment.
Did I mention that the cocky Garden Center Dude was wrong about the heron? I may have to go back and rub it in a bit. You know, just for fun. I said it was a raccoon from the start.
I hate being right.

Well, you were one-third right.
(How can you hate on those cute little bandits?)
Herons like to stand in your pond and eat your fish too. Raccoons are so darn cute, I don't know how you'll get rid of them.
Oh my ~ but look how adorable they are!!! Sweet little raccoons! Not that I would want them in my yard though... ;)
Good luck with your situation Lin!
xo Catherine
With the right sling shot you could make Joe a nice coon skin cap for Christmas.
Raccoons are not cute and fuzzy like everyone thinks...they are killers, just ask my poultry! Plus they carry diseases and worms! You can get one of those cage traps and bait it with tuna and probably catch them and haul them off to the woods far away....
Or like Jodi said ...coon skin cap, lol!
Hate being right....LOL!
An elderly neighbor lady had a group from church over for dinner one evening many years ago. Folks kept going back for more of the roast beef. For years they bragged about that being the best roast beef they had ever eaten. Eventually it came out that it roasted raccoon. They still thought it was good. And it was!
Oh dear! BTW...where do you get the coyote pee? Just curious!
I admit, I did wonder if it was raccoons eating your fish. We had one on the porch recently, munching my cat's cat food. They have nerves of steel, I tell ya-- eating two inches from the front door with porch lights blasting and my cat watching the show... sheesh.
Raccoons are EVERYWHERE right now. Me, I would just LOVE for the old Daniel Boone cookskin hat to come back in vogue...
Somehow I don't believe raccoons would be worried about coyote pee. So far I have not lost any small koi. But I understand it is only a matter of time.
They are too cute.. A pain, But cute... BTW, where in the heck to you get Coyote pee.. I have never heard of such a thing..
Hope you are having a great week,
Hugs, Linda
SO, when IS the buffet?
Wow, how do you rid of them? If you find out maybe look up how to get rid of a family of skunks. I almost got sprayed the other night.... One of the babies was heading home. It was heading north, I was putting out the garbage. We scared the crap out of eachother. Thankfully I was scareder. Really really thankfully.... and mommy skunk is just huge
My father had 2 pet raccoons when he was in the Army - he was away on maneuvers one weekend and when he got back the raccoons were gone. Upon investigation it seems some of his camp mates were from the South and homesick so they took the opportunity of his being away to cook them up some raccoon stew. I think my father then took the opportunity to cook some red-neck parmigiana!
A tale that must be told:
When I lived in NJ I fed the stray cats.
Outside.
Of course the raccoons came to dine.
There was one memorable raccoon.
She had been hit by a car and her back end was paralyzed.
She would walk dragging her back half behind her. She climbed the steps ON HER FRONT PAWS. Like in a handstand.
That fall she brought her LITTER to eat at the cat food.
All four of them.
Like a good mother.
They followed her up a 15' high flight of steps. She on her front paws, they trailing behind.
She was a good mother.
Raccoons are just trying to eat.
I know, just not your fish.
Well that sucks! Although...they are cute and they do need to eat too! Maybe neighbor's annoying dog can be on the menu?
Yep, that's who gets (steals) most things around my yard. As long as they can get to your fish, they will. I wish I knew what to say to help, but they are not afraid of anything. They will eat the frogs too!
I almost feel bad about saying they are cute. Cute however, is no excuse for eating your fish.
Oh no, not cute raccoons! That's too bad they are the culprits. Hopefully they find a buffet somewhere else from now on.
Well, I think they're pretty cute... But do they have to be so mean??!
Vanilla--Not in my backyard! If they left the pond pallies alone, they are more than welcome to stay, but somehow I think they all have dinner on their minds. Ugh.
Marilynne--"Someone(s)" is eating my fish, water hyacinths, snails, and I'm hoping NOT my frogs. After I saw those 3, I know exactly who it is. The telltale sign was the dead fish left on the lawn. Raccoons fish for fun and oftentimes leave the fish to die on the grass. I may have to pay to have them trapped.
Catherine--Yeah/no. They are cute, but very damaging to a pond.
Jodi--A slingshot or an air gun wouldn't be half bad. I don't want to hurt them--just scare them off.
Melodie--Thank you, Melodie! I'm not catching them, but I may have to pay to have them taken away. It is illegal here to trap them.
Diana--Me too. It's hell being smart. (well, this once)
Chuck--Oh, YUCK!
Hot Rocks--Bought it. $20 for a bottle. Look at my 7/20 post--there's the package photo.
Rebecca--I saw your photo of your raccoon--the beast. I'm afraid they'll hurt the kitties and my frogs. I may have to have them trapped to get rid of them. Ugh.
Highway--Supposedly they are prey to coyotes and are afraid of the pee smell. I don't know. But right now, I'm trying anything besides spending the $$$ to have them relocated.
Linda--Look at my 7/20 post--I actually show the package of it. Cost me $20!! I don't know if it works, but I'll try anything at this point. (it is very stinky!)
Betty--Shut. the. front. door. ;) That's my cool new Rachel Zoe saying. ;)
Tracy--Oh, I'll take my raccoons over skunks any day! Yikes. That is scary AND stinky!! I think I will have to pay someone to trap and relocate this gang. Beastly things.
Grace--Oh, that is sad, Grace! How awful!
Pricilla--Awwww. I think I would have put food out for her. I understand they just want to eat, but when you put so much into the pond, you hate to see all your pond pallies half eaten in the yard. I go out tentatively each morning, half expecting one of my frogs to be dead.
Nancy--Hahaha! No such luck! Damn it.
DJ--I know! That is what I am dreading. Fortunately, my frogs hop in at the mere sight of the kitties, but I'm afraid of when it gets cooler and they slow down a bit. :(
Ann--Right. I don't want them to hurt the kitties OR the frogs. There really aren't any fish that they can get now. The minnows don't come up to the surface.
Beaded Tail--Me too. I'm so afraid they are gonna get my frogs. :(
Cute--They aren't mean as much as they are hungry. They have learned to scavenge off humans and that is what they are doing. And here I am, offering them what they love most--water to play and eat in. Ugh.
they are cute. but i'd be afraid to ever go back outside again...eeek!!
Now ain't THAT some shit. I hope you get those little buggers.
I think your raccoons are cute. Why not welcome more wildlife into your yard? I would not have a clue on how to get rid of them.
Roschelle--I have to admit to being a little tentative when I go out at night. It's not good to surprise them. Two ran off right away, but the one was gonna put up a fight. That sorta scared me!
Mee2--Me too. While they are cute to look at, they are wrecking havoc on my yard.
Karen--Everyone is welcome as long as you behave and don't eat others. It's a simple rule here-- "Be kind to your pallies" or at least tolerant. If you are eating or fighting with others, you have to move on. I am not feeding the birds and I've got a ton of plants in the water to discourage them from going in the pond. I sprinkle the coyote pee, but I don't think that does much. Next I will probably have to pay to have them relocated.
Maybe talk to animal control if you have that in your area... They might be able to give you a trap to use to catch the little beasts!
