Keep your eye on that grand ole flag!

Back in my sophomore year in high school, our spring musical was "George M". And while I wasn't one for speaking parts (go figure) back then, I was all about being part of the chorus of tap dancers. Add some patriotic songs to all that tippy-tapping and you've got one happy show--and one happy me.

One of the great adventures of my life was learning to tap dance for the high school musicals, I can still do a mean time step if prompted. And I still know all the words from every song from that show. We'd sit backstage, cranking out the tunes with the "stars" while waiting for our cue for the next big number. I guess we were a little loud because during rehearsals the director would scream from the booth "Shut up backstage!". Always the buzzkill.

Anyway, so anytime anyone is the least bit patriotic, I start singing "You're a Grand Ole Flag" on the top of my lungs. Yeah, this goes over swell with kids. I just blame it on my "stage voice" and my years with the theater.

So, with that image in your mind, feel free to belt out a few lines yourself today while watching your parades or fireworks. Embrace your patriotism!

And add a few tappy toes while you are at it.

I have a weakness for Grand Ole Flag. I had to learn it in elementary school and I still can belt all the lines.

Have a happy forth!

BTW....when did fire trucks and siren's become mainstay of hometown parades? WTF does a blaring horn and 95 decibel freak show have to do with apple pie and chevrolet? Fran's Dad

That song is going to be stuck in my head all day now but that's okay, it's supposed to be on the 4th I guess!

Hope you enjoy your day!

Will you show us your tap dance in video Lin? I am dying to see even a short one.

You can ask Hobbes to company you too if you feel shy to do it alone :)

I remember my kids way back in Montessori preschool singing that song when they would put on their little parade- around the block.

Hope yours was great.

Melodie--It's our only get-even, Melodie. They did things that embarrassed us too, right?

Highway--It's a great song sung loud.

Fran's Dad--I don't know, but I'm with you on this one. I despise that awful ear-piercing siren portion of a parade. I always ask "why?".

Tracy--Only my yearbook has proof of such escapades. It was hilariously fun to do and I have fond memories of those tapping days. Kinda makes me want to run out and buy a pair!

Pricilla--I was looking for that on TCM yesterday, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Sigh. The world's youth is missing out. Although mine got a reprise in the kitchen yesterday--albeit a little winded version. My song and dance stamina is a little gone.

Beaded Tail--I'm guessing you sang it to your kitties. :) You just can't help it--it is a fun song!

Ann--I hope you Googled it so that you could belt it out. I hope Duke wasn't too scared of the fireworks.

V7--I do not have video proof of such talents and taping that now would just embarrass me. My thighs would be flapping with my arms and that would NOT be a good thing. :) Just imagine a younger, thinner me tapping like a fool in my younger days!

Roschelle--We did! Did you??! We had fun with friends on their boat. Ahhhhh, nice. Relaxing and fun. :)

Harriet--Or those words. That song has a way of just sticking in your brain. We had a great fourth--did you?

I need a video of this so called "tap dancing". I'll bet you're awesome.

Casey--It wasn't "so called" it was REAL tap dancing and I ROCKED IT! This was the days before every idiot parent owned a camcorder,so you are just gonna have to imagine the talent! Nowadays, there's more flapping on my thighs going on than my toes. :(
