Yeah, I'm sure there has been more than one call to the murder hotline by distressed, over-the-edge family members who can't take it anymore. It does test your stress levels at times, I have to say.
So, while all that is going on, there is one thing that always sticks in the back of my mind:
We left them in the care of various sitters--Sammy the Wiener Dog's mom and G'ma Phyl all made sure they were well taken care of. Wiener Dog's mom made sure there was fresh water, plenty of food, and a clean litter box, while G'ma Phyl dished out the lovin' on a daily basis. Hobbes is a lovin' guy--he can't go without out smooches for more than a day or two.
In spite of our best intentions, the cats always manage to act all miffy when we get home. It is our penance for daring to leave them in the house for a whole week.
Grace walks right past us and darts out the door--relishing the fresh air that she was missing all week. Who cares that she doesn't really go outside when we are home--it's just that she had no choice in the matter while we were out of town.
The only thing faster than Grace plowing us down to get out the door is Hobbes. You have never seen 17 lbs of orange ottoman breaking land speed records until you have seen Hobbes after being in the house, with Grace, for more than 6 hours. Homeboy was gasping the stale air conditioned air, suffering for days upon days--or so he says with his reprimanding mews.
There is no petting or attention for us lame humans for at least an hour or so. We must be taught a lesson and there is no forgiveness--well, until they realize that they need a little scratch on the chin. Ahhhhh, there is no love like Mom love--just ask them. G'ma Phyl is good, but she doesn't know about that spot right under the chin.
All is forgiven now that we have been home for days, but Hobbes still insists on darting out the door first thing in the morning. He isn't taking any chances that we might leave again.

Tooooooo cute. Glad they are so well taken care of.
I put a comment somewhere. It's diabetes not Leukemia so I guess that is somewhat good.
When my mom and dad come back from vacation, I make a very loud crying noise. This helps them feel guilty for leaving.
Okay, you've been duly punished; now let's get on with the lovin' you owe us!
I just wanna know who has the stinkiest feet?
Only cats can get away with acting like that, lol!
Cats are so funny... they do act that way when their humans return. Yet, they spurn us when we are there all the time. (mostly... maybe not Hobbes.)
Isn't it amazing the 'cold shoulder' us humans get after leaving kitties for a day or two. They certainly punish us where it hurts ~ right in the heart. :(
But luckily they always forgive us ~ usually by the first opening of the cat food can! :)
Happy Day!

I never understood people until I learned to love and appreciate cats. Okay, cats are a bit more extreme, but you've got to love them. And unlike people, they don't stay mad.
If we go away for too long, Spike will be spiteful and will sit on the neighbor's lawn as if to say "Hmf! They love me over here." It takes a couple of nuzzle sessions with Brownie to convince him to sit on our lawn again.
This is Cody, A.Marie's cat. I also get very, very miffed when my Mom goes away. This is my advice to Hobbes: milk it for all it is worth. Don't give into the scratchin' and lovin' until they have plied you with lots of yummy treats!! I am typing as fast as my paws will let me because Mom doesn't know I am up here; uh oh...here she comes. Oops..gotta go....
They do know how to dole out the punishment!
I'm glad you're home and obviously Hobbes is too!
so glad to hear that Hobbes doesn't punish you for too long. He's a smart one
Cats sure can hold a grudge. I think that's what I like about them, not dumb with the attention span of a goldfish (like my dogs).
Oh yeah, they get all huffy and puffy. No matter how much attention they get it's not the RIGHT attention. Since we have moved here we can't travel together because we have no one to watch the kitties, still they manage to get all pissy even when one of us is here and the other is gone...like ya know, one human is not enough, they MUST have two...
It sounds like Hobbes and Grace missed the outdoors more than they missed you humans.
awwww... he has abandonment issues...awwwwwww
Helene--What??? Who?? I didn't see that comment--tell me what's up, pally! I hope you are okay.
Daisy--Ooooh, that's a good one, Daisy. That must be very annoying/effective. :)
Vanilla--Yeah, it's funny how fast they turn sweet again. That's what I love about kitties.
Jodi--Well, it wasn't really feet, but it is a classy blog here, Jodi. You know those family conversations. ;)
Melodie--No kidding. The dog can't pull that one because he needs somebody to let him outside!
Sharky--We are mere pawns in their world, aren't we? Hobbes is a sucker for lovin', thank goodness. But he is definitely the first cat I've ever had that is like that.
Catherine--Yeah, the stomach always wins!
Chuck--Give me a cat any day, Chuck.
DG--Hahaha! I love him having a sit-in over at the neighbor's house. That's hilarious! I like how you send Brownie over as the liaison.
Cody--You will be proud of Hobbes, he didn't really come to me for smoochies until last night. That was 3 days of holding out! Not bad for a guy who digs his lovin'.
Pricillla--Yeah, what is with that??! Isn't it funny how they ALL do that??
Violet--It is good to be home. I like being with the kitties again. Hobbes is just glad we don't have the electric kitty litter box going--he doesn't like that thing.
Ann--Oh, he's no fool. Both he and Grace can only stay mad for so long.
Casey--Dogs are just so dependent on humans, I think that is the difference. The kitties are fine as long as the dish is full and the litter box is clean. Other than that they don't need us really.
Grace--We can leave the kitties for a day or two, but anything more than that, I like to have someone look in on them. They have a tendency to barf somewhere in the house--it is their secret "surprise" for us when we get home. "Find the Barf"--what fun.
Sparkle--Gasp! Do you think so, Sparkle????! :0
We vacation at home--I couldn't bare to leave our pets for a whole week! I even hated leaving them for just a one night when I went on a retreat!
Karen--I think it is good for everyone to get away for a bit....as long as you have a good pet caregiver. That is the key. I have to know the kitties are gonna be okay or I'd be staying home too.
Glad they had good care but I'm sure they were so happy when you got home, even if they had to pout for a bit. My dad comes out and stays here if we leave but the cats still stick to us like glue when we get home and Sadie follows me everywhere I go. It does the trick of making me feel guilty for leaving them in the first place!
Scratch on the chin... If it has double chin, that's mean double goodness? :D
Beaded Tail--Yeah, our caregivers couldn't be better, but there is just something about routine for the cats. They are so darn spoiled, aren't they??
V7--Oh yeah! The only part of Hobbes that isn't big is his chin, pally! I swear he keeps growing!
Our 47 lb black and white 13 yo cat. Diabetes. Thought the kitten had given him the leukemia but nope. He is diabetic and fading. On insulin now. Went to Walgreens for $128 of insulin and needles for....kitty. I went at 5am sheesh. Um this is for my....cat.
Sigh, my kitty was always like that, teaching me a big lesson.
gingers much less dignified. Shes not afraid to show shes glad Im home :)
