This butterfly is just a tease. He lands on everything BUT Hobbes, which is driving him mad. It flits from one flower to the next, casually buzzing the orange guy's personal space in the interim.
Hey, Happy 4th of July, pallies. We have absolutely no plans whatsoever, which is like heaven. We are gonna meet up with friends here and there, but no official parties or scheduled to-dos anywhere in the agenda. Hooray! I may just have a hook-up with the hammock after all!
We are celebrating a certain kid's (Colin) 18th birthday as well. Scary to think he's so old and I am not. I am requesting that everyone refer to me as his "older sister" now, and not his mother. I think I can pull that off, don't you?
Anyway,I wish you peace and the company of those you love this weekend. May you escape the clutches of electronics and enjoy life just a bit. I'm gonna try to catch up with all of you and then head out into the back 40 for a little breathing time as well. Enjoy!

That is one beautiful picture!
Did you make that up about the name of the butterfly?
Happy 4th! Love that picture. There was a coyote near here this morning. Gotta love the north suburbs.
Older sister? Um yeah I am sure Colin will love that. Happy birthday to Colin.
Oh yeah, older sister for sure.
Poor Hobbes with the butterfly always staying just out of reach!
Yup ~ older sister ~ I think that will work! :)
Happy 4th of July!
xo Catherine
LOL, I always tell my kid, man how can I have a kid as old as you when I'm only 23?
Love that pic!
You could pull that off. Colin might not like like it, but you could. I'm not sure if I should wish the stripey guy good luck or not. But this is America and we're into life, liberty and the happiness of pursuit. Go Hobbes go!
FWIW, Midnight loves to play with wasps. I don't think he's been stung--yet.
That is a great pic of Hobbes!
Yesterday a 7 year-old referred to my husband as "Your Daddy" - Laughs all around...
Happy Birthday to your younger brother. Lol!
Happy 4th of July! Be sure to let Hobbes join you in your hammick. Maybe he'll be lucky enough to wake up with one of those admiral butterflies within striking distance.
Gorgeous picture! Have a great fourth!
Gorgeous picture! Have a great fourth!
The butterflies are driving poor pumpkin nuts too. In our case I believe they are Painted Ladies.
Happy Fourth to you!
I see that Hobbs has the same taste in flying creatures as I do! I love moths and I am always hoping for the rare and special treat of an actual butterfly to make its way into the house... and my clutches!
My human says you already look like Em's older sister, so that would also make you Colin's older sister by default (she thinks it might be pushing things too much to try for the "middle" kid, LOL!).
You have two great ideas here: refer to you as older sister, and no specific plans for the Fourth of July. Ah let freedom reign. Let's protect the Bill of Rights and enjoy the day.
That's a lovely photo of Hobbes!
Happy Birthday to Colin! You most certainly could pass for an older sister! Not sure if Col and Em would agree.
Enjoy your holiday weekend!
Vanilla--Nope. It really is the name of the butterfly. These will actually come sit on your head!
Helene--We live near the forest preserves and get a stray coyote or deer every once in awhile. I'm glad it isn't too often!
Ann--But I'm not saying how much older! ;)
Catherine--He spends half his day watching these little guys! He caught a dragonfly the other day, but has yet to get a butterfly.
Tracy--How can that be???! :) These kids don't know how lucky they are to have such "young" moms!
Chuck--Hobbes was into bees last year, but he found out quickly that batting them isn't such a good idea. I wonder if he remembers??
Grace--Oh, I like that one! I'll bet you never let him forget that one!
Lola--Hee! Hee! Yeah, he's thrilled about that one. ;)
Ozark Mtn Cats--Hobbes likes to sit under the hammock. I'm thinking it's because I make lots of shade!
DG--Isn't it funny?! He's such an easy target to shoot.
Jennifer--Hey, we have a couple of those playing with him too! It's funny how they tease that poor cat.
Sparkle--Hobbes caught a dragonfly the other day, so I think he likes the flying bugs too, just like you. I think he learned the hard way with bees last summer. The kids just LOVE that I'm posing as their sister....NOT! ;)
Terra--It's nice to just relax for a change. I'm going with whatever comes up....or doesn't. Happy 4th, pally!
Beaded Tail--The kids don't think I'm funny, I don't know why. ;) That Hobbes sure gives me great opportunities for fun photos. Kinda like your troop at your place. Now if I could only get him to smile like Sadie. :)
Happy Birthday to Colin!
Have a wonderful 4th July weekend, Lin.
Wishing you guys the same. Hey, hope Hobbes gets a chance to be up close and "personal" with the Admiral really soon :)
Happy Independence Day! Wouldn't it be cool if an Admiral landed on Hobbes' head? That would be an awesome photo.
Veronica--He's 18!! Yikes! Don't blink--it will happen to your boys before you know it. Ugh.
Roschelle--He's working on it--everyday. I'm gonna bean him if he catches that butterfly!
Daisy--It just might! But I would be laughing so hard, I don't think I could get the photo!
:-) Love that picture! You always catch him at his "bestest!"
I spent my holiday weekend rescuing critters from the clutches of our cats. Our yard is home to a family of squirrels living in the knot of a tree, a family of chipmunks living under a stack of scrap wood, and a family of bunnies living under a temporary dumpster - all of whom have been either trapped by or carried in the mouth of one of our cats before being saved by us. There are also moles, birds, snakes, and bumble bees making narrow escapes. You would think they would have learned by now that 2 kitties own this yard. Sheesh. I can't save them all, but I try. Our cats must think I'm the biggest fuddy dud ever.
