Yard Art/Crap

One of the subjects we talked about at our mini-BlogFest last week was our favorite blogs and bloggers. Of course, all of your names came up--heck, we did have a few hours to visit. And while Lola, CardioGirl, and I share a lot of the same pallies, I had to share with them my latest crack up: Along Life's Highway The Yard Art Game.

If you know the story of Duck and Wheel With String, you know that my blog got its name from a wacky yard at the end of my street which features a metal wagon wheel, a large white duck, some weeds, and a wayward piece of string. Okay, so while that is strange, I want you to know that there is a whole blog based on the concept of scoring points for the crap that is proudly displayed in yards across America.

Highway, as I lovingly refer to her, is a new pally who cracks me up daily. Her readers are brave, brave folks. Folks who not only unabashedly take photos of stranger's yards, but they also make up lies when confronted with what they are doing. They then send their "entries" to Highway, and she scores them points for the various elements of "art". I'm not cheating or anything, but if you score one of those seahorse birdbaths, girlfriend sorta goes nuts with the points on your behalf.

And while I can spot yard crap a mile away, I have yet to conjure up the guts to snap a photo of it and send it in, although I keep threatening to do so. Heck, it took me over a year to sneak a photo of Duck and Wheel With String.

OOOH! OOOH! I wanna play. Let me get my camera. What do you think I'll get for a catamaran that sits on someone's lawn all year long? I'll bet it's worth bonus points when it's covered in snow!

What a great blog idea! We can never have too much "art" in our lives. My camera is now at the ready.

Seriuosly. About 2.5 weeks ago I could have won a photo yard crap contest-- when the vampire was still next door.

I just popped over to Highway's blog ~ too funny! I don't know if I would have the nerve to take pictures of other people's "Beverly Hillbillies" yards ~ so I will have to be satisfied by popping back over to her blog once in awhile to take a peak. Ha!

I didn't realize that is how you came up with your blog name ~ from your neighbours front-yard 'art' display. You are classic Lin!

Have a fun day friend!

Lin, I am so very honored. And I DO NOT grant special privileges for the the seahorse birdbath. Although I do admit, I lavish those finds with special praises. (Mommy has a favorite)

I found your blog because of the duck, wheel and string story and yet I am very sure I have never seen it.

Melodie said...

Can we enter pictures of our own tacky yard crap!?!?!?!?!

DG--Oh wait--if we get points for that, I'm gonna win big time! I'm wondering what my neighbors 4 foot stack of cardboard on my fence would earn me. I think we need to make a separate blog for those annoying neighbors.

Merry--I've got some doozies around here, but I'm too chicken to take the photo.

Jodi--Vampire?? I'm not asking.

Catherine--I love to click on the photos and then read her comments--they are hilarious! It makes me laugh. She is snarky--I LOVE snarky.

Highway--You haven't seen it because I was too chicken to take the photo. Now they have moved Duck closer to the stairs--away from wheel. It's just not the same. :(

Melodie--Oh yes! And perhaps you will get bonus points for ratting yourself out!

Lin, I posted your entry on the fan page. Some of my rabble may come over for a visit. I hope they behave themselves.

JODI said...

Lin, I should have referred to them as the Klopeks. We also referred to them as the vampires since they never let sunshine in the house.

It's sorta like "The People of Wal-Mart". You know, "The Yards of the People of Walmart".

I actually have a soft spot in my heart for people who have eccentric lawn decorations. Not rusted out old cars and trash, but yeah, I love me a flock of pink flamingos!

lifeshighway said...

Grace, you misunderstand. I have a soft spot for them too. It's my southern heritage. Heck I have stuff in my yard. My own brother scores my yard as he walks up to the front door.

Grace said...

I have wanted to photograph the window and stoop decorations here in South Philly bit I think I would get in major trouble if I tried it. OMG do these folks like to decorate - they are decorating fools - the operative word being fool. Any occasion is cause for a trip to the dollar store, we won't even talk about the major holidays. And then there is, of course, the sports team decor...oy!

You got the sharpness of stripey tiger's eyes Lin. If only you bring me along. I let you do the spotting while I'll do the snapping :D

Oh BTW, the chubby kid pictures are delivered to where she belongs, her parents. They were so happy till the extend of asked me to re-shoot the same theme but with them as the model. No no no... Thanks but NO! :D

I'm one of Highway's rabble, although I've never submitted photos to her; I leave that to my daughter who is currently the top scorer!!

Enjoyed your blog!

I would happily snap some photos for you in Weirdville next time I visit. Of course then you have to help me figure out how to accomplish my NY resolution of being on People of Walmart.com.

I'm definitely going to snap a photo of that yard 1 block over this week. There, I've said it, now I HAVE to do it.

Hmmm, here is is just artfully preserved goat poop.

I wanna play too. Sounds like a really "fun" and "sneakily exciting" game.

Got lots of photos in the Mississippi Delta that would certainly be enormous conversation pieces ;)

Oh man, my back yard. Gulp

I have got to go check out that blog sounds like fun. I'm always a little shy about taking pictures of other peoples yards, I have to check and double check to make sure no one is watching ...lol

hahah that's great.

Highway--They are all welcome here! The more, the merrier!!

Jodi--Oh, we've had neighbors like that. And she'd only come out after dark! And she was young too--like 30-35. Such weirdness for a young woman.

Grace--It's such a fine line of one or two cute things, but soon it looks ridiculous. I'm gonna have to get brave one of these days--there are some classics in Weirdville.

Highway--Who can resist all that cute crap they sell at the stores??? It's easy to start ringing up a score if you aren't careful.

V7--We'd be dangerous as a team, pally! I can see us slowly driving the streets of Weirdville, sneaking up on unsuspecting yard crap...and SNAP! Got it! Oh, I wish you were here to give me courage. I knew those parents were gonna LOVE those photos!! They are beautiful.

Mom L--Oh, welcome, new pally! Yeah, I'm with you, I haven't submitted yet, but "yet" is the key word in that sentence. I'm trying to grow some cahunas.

Lola--Okay, maybe you can come over and well just drive around Weirdville snapping photos. Folks are really gonna think we are weird then!! ;) I'm waiting for your photo submission.

Pricilla--But I'll bet there are some doozies in the area, right?? Some of the best (?) offenders live in the country.

Roschelle--I think this is everywhere--you just have to be brave enough to take the photo. I've got a couple here, but I'm such a chicken!

Tracy--Well, at least it is in the back and not the front, right?

Ann--Yep, me too! Read yesterday's post there--they actually get busted and they come up with a really good excuse! I'm not that quick.

Stacie--Did you???! I have some yard crap too, but it is in the back and there isn't much of it. I doubt my yard could score.

My new digital has a killer zoom lens, and there are some, um "interesting" yards in the southwest part of my little section of NE L.A. Maybe I should give it a try.

Jennifer MacNeill-Traylor said...

Right up my alley! Thanks for the link:)

Casey said...

OH, I love that idea! And why do you have a picture of my house in this post?

BeadedTail said...

Now I'm going to have to start paying more attention to yard art! I'll see if I have nerve enough to snap a photo or two.

Lin said...

Janiss--Really? You don't have yard crap in CA??? Maybe it is a midwest thing. I think you should send in what you got. I'm curious.

Jennifer--This blog has me cracking up each day--no lie. It is a pleasant mix of snarky and hilarity. I only wish I was brave enough to submit an entry.

Casey--No--that would be MY house!!! Well, it feels like that anyway.

Beaded Tail--It's all about the nerve. I've got some good stuff right at the end of the street--it's just a matter of taking its photo. I need some courage, big time!

I love most things that speak to a person's individuality. If it comes out with a duck, a wheel, and a bit of string, you make it an art and write a blog.

BTW we have four geese in our yard. They look so real they capture people's attention.

Hot Rocks said...

That is hilarious...I have to check out her blog! Not much for weird art, junk yards in my area, but whenever we travel, I see loads of them. Usually strange farms, small town weirdness, desolate acreages. We leave for holidays on Thursday, so this time I am going to see if I can get some pics! Oooh, puts a whole new spin on road trips!

Terra said...

Hi, I am your newest follower and now I am going to check out the funny yard art blog you mention here.

Lin said...

Writer Lady--Hi, new pally! I'm with you--I love things that make us all wacky and different. I got more chuckles out of the plot at the end of the street that I named my blog after it. Life is good....AND funny!

Hot Rocks--Oh yes! Have fun snapping pictures of strange sights! I can't wait to see if you submit a photo to Highway's blog.

Terra--Welcome, new pally! Oh, you are gonna love that blog! The scary part is that you are gonna take a second look at your own yard and hope nobody is taking pictures of it!
