Status of the Pond

  • 3 frogs - one large, two small
  • 2 tadpoles - one w/legs working on arms, one with stubby legs
  • 2 fish - never got around to getting a new one yet
  • 3 (?) snails - Dang! I never remember how many I buy. But I did find a baby the other day, so I know there's some action going on in them there waters.
  • Minnows - I think there are about 15 or so--they never sit still enough to be able to count them. Add to that, there's been action in that department too, so tiny minnow fry are everywhere.
What I love most about the pond is the constant change. Every time I go out, there is something new to notice, something to poke or look closely at. Sure, there is some maintenance anytime you have life, whether it be fighting algae, trimming back plant life, or medicating a sick fish, but it is all so rewarding.

Happy Weekend, pallies!

I hated sick fish in my fish tank :(

It looks so pretty. Sounds like the pond is a hopping place with all those residents. How exactly does one go about medicating a sick fish?

That is very pretty!

I dug a pond once when I was so furious with my husband I thought I would explode. I dug it in clay soil, double-lined it with a garbage bag, filled it with water, then added what we called mosquito fish - a gold-fish-like fish that loves mosquito larvae. By the time I was done, my fury had exhausted me and my husband lived through it.

I do love the idea of a pond.

Your pond abounds with life and that's mainly the reason you get to find something new and interesting every single day. :D

Your pond sounds like a very worthwhile addition to your yard and I'm always for anything that amuses the cats!

Your pond sounds like the match.com for fish and snails.

I had tadpoles but my koi at them :( I wondered why the suckers were not as excited about the koi chow.

It must be fun having something like this at home. I wouldn't know how to keep everything alive though.

V7--I'll see if I can get closer--I don't want to fall in though!

Tracy--I hate fish really. They are hard to keep healthy and hard to fix when they are sick. I'd like to get away from the big fish and just stick to the minnows.

Ann--You have to medicate the water. You have to pull the filter and put it in. It's hard to fix fish though and they usually die.

Grace--Thanks, pally. :) Unfortunately, it's kinda turning green a bit. Ugh. That's the only green I don't like!

Marilynne--So, did it work? Did you have a pond then?? There is nothing an angry woman can't do! ;)

JuneZach--I love to go out at night with a flashlight to see everything coming alive in the dark. It's amazing what you can see at night. Too bad I can't take photos then!

Karen--Grace doesn't pay any attention to the pond, but Hobbes will drink out of it and he'll try to scare the frogs back into the water. He likes when they "eep" and plop into the water.

Janiss--No kidding! I caught the snails doing something the other day--now I KNOW what they were doing. Ick.

Pricilla--That is actually only one lily plant in there. I have one lily, and 3 other water plants that I don't remember the name of, and some water hyacinths.

Highway--Awwww, darn! I don't like koi for that reason--they'll eat anything. I draw the line at fish who will eat spit. Ick.

Petula--It is nice to have that right outside my door. :)

Stephanie--Thanks! It's a great addition to the yard and garden.

Ratty--You kind of learn the hard way. My first frog spent a winter in a tub of water. The poor thing! I didn't know it needed more land than water at that point. The fish, tadpoles, and snails have all been trial and error too. And it also helps to have a good pond and/or reptile store around too. I've asked many a weird question, believe me!
