Do you know the back-up sound trucks make? Well, that's what it sounds like all day, every day. It is so annoying that at one point I yelled up to the bird that I was gonna eat her baby just to shut her up. I'm sure the neighbors confirmed my wackiness at that point.
I finally saw the little guy, and yes, he is still pretty little. Two days ago he still couldn't fly all that great, so I get why she's a little nervous, but all that peeping is driving me batty. Even Hobbes came in to the air conditioning to escape her birdie rant yesterday. Ears folded back, he laid down on the rug and sighed, relieved to be rid of her annoying voice.
I spotted the baby about 2 feet from the street the other day, so I hollered for Colin to come help me corral it back closer to the house. I've seen too many squished baby birds and I didn't want this one to become a statistic--god knows how long his mother would cry about that.
So, like a good kid, he came out, arms held wide as he tried to scoot Baby Bird a little closer to the house. Oh, criminy--Mom and Dad came at my kid full force swooping and dodging, threatening to eat Colin's eyeballs like grapes. It was like a scene from "The Birds" and poor Colin was just trying to save their beastly kid! All the while, I sat in my car (I was going to get Em) giggling to myself, but trying not to laugh and make Colin mad.
Baby Bird hopped a few feet in the right direction and Col bailed for the safety of the house. Whew. Of course, the P's (parents) were more upset than before and proceeded to peep louder, if that was possible. I shook my head and drove away--with the sound of angry birds still ringing in my head.
I'm not sure how long it's gonna take for Baby Bird to be on his own, but if it takes any longer than a week, I'm gonna lose it. On some level, it's good to know that it is still alive and making it--her constant peeping tells me Baby is still hopping around on the lawn. She is also a birdie GPS for Hobbes because she lets everyone know where his stripey self is at all times. If I'm looking for him, I just have to go in the direction of The Peep--sure enough, there he is--ears folded back in annoyance. But, there is that other level that wishes he would just fly or die already so that Mom could can the noise.
I hate baby bird season. And I think Hobbes agrees with me on this one.

All the employees where my son works got pecked at by an angry mother bird the other day too. Those gals get wicked protective!
2 weeks ago I visited a friend who works at the Evanston YWCA. On swim meet night no less. Tony lot, too many cars. A duck had her eggs safely on the grass. But this night she was strolling the parking lot. Not a place you want to be with North Shore drivers in their SUV's. The women were worse than the men. We couldn't get her back to the side so we stood guard since these bozo drivers were more likely to see us.
That was TINY lot. Sheesh
The crows are at it here! LOUD!
I had to laugh at this, well who didn't, really. It seems this year we actually have birds around here - don't know where they live and what they eat but I am grateful for them, so are the cats!
Hee hee. Only you can weave a tail about a bunch of boring birds into this riveting mystery-thriller mini-novel.
*sigh* I am really missing such moments. Life is way too hectic.. if I had two clones, it wouldn't be enough. I will remember this summer as the summer I lived vicariously through the bloggers. I yearn for quiet times and watching the birds and the flowers grow again....
I am in tears laughing. Hobbes needs his own reality show!!
Heh.
We have a robin nesting in the eaves of the barn. No babies yet...
Now I know what I have to look forward to.
Oh poor Colin but what a good sport he is to honor your request to save the bird.
We had a nest in the bushes on the side of my house last year and every time Duke went out momma bird went ballistic.
I have never had the pleasure of a nesting Robin but a Nesting pair of Blue Jays are down right lethal. Very funny story.
Violet--No kidding! We've got Dad joining in here too. It's just ridiculous.
Helene--I wince every single time I see a mom and ducklings or geese crossing very busy streets for that very reason. I think folks these days don't care if they mow a family down. Hooray for you, protecting them!
Bossy Betty--We don't get many crows here, thank goodness. But I have heard they are REALLY obnoxious. Is that for their babies or just general purposes?
Grace--Oh, birdies are fun to watch, I can see why your kitties are happy. I think Hobbes might have poked the little guy just for fun, but I know he wouldn't eat him--he's not hungry enough. Either way, mom wasn't taking chances!
Rebecca--I can see you have a ton of things going on--but they are all good! We are too busy this summer too, and I'm hoping after this weekend it will begin to slow. I need to read my favorite blogs again.
peewee--Well, maybe Hobbes and Colin!
Pricilla--I hate baby bird season--it is just too full of death. I know it sounds morbid, but I hate finding dead baby birds and broken eggs. They just make me sad. I don't put up birdhouses for that reason.
Ann--Colin is a sport and has a kind heart. You should have seen him scram when Mom Bird went nuts!!! Poor Duke! I guess all four-legged pallies are Mom Bird targets, eh?
Highwa--Ooooh, I cannot imagine!! And the noise! Yikes!! I guess I'll stick to my robin. Today she is quiet so I hope the little guy is okay.
We don't see many baby birds around here but we do get the shrill screech of blue jays year round. They are the noisiest birds I've ever heard and start at the crack of dawn.
I hope your baby bird flies the coop soon! And thanks to Colin for saving it from being squished!
Awwww. I'm sure that Robin would be less than thrilled at the sound of a human baby crying all the time. It's just your turn. ;)
I love birds, but that would drive me crazy! I'd hide inside with Hobbes too!
Wow, that's unusual for a baby robin to be hopping around with the parents. We have had so many this year but once they are out of the nest, the parents are on to other things. I know what you mean about the mama's complaining. Hang in there.
For the sake of all concerned, I hope Junior has taken wing.
And why do birds need to tweet so loudly at 3:30 in the morning when you have your bedroom window open trying to catch a breeze and trying to sleep?
hmmm....
xo Catherine
As the Reverend Johnson said in Blazing Saddles, "Son, you're on your own."
Beaded Tail--I cannot imagine blue jays having babies--Yikes! I think it is gone now as I haven't heard them in a few days. That is either good news or bad. I'm not thinking about it.
Cute--Oh, it is unbearable! Poor Hobbes couldn't go anywhere outside without her yelling at him.
Storm--I like singing birds, but not screaming birds. And she was non-stop!
Mtn Woman--Maybe you don't notice with all that space around you. We have really small lots here and I think those momma birdies have to really watch their young if they leave the nest too soon. Maybe it fell out or something. Whatever it is, it is quiet now. I'm not sure if that is good news or bad.
Vanilla--Yeah, me too!!
Catherine--Worse than that is the blue jay that insists on singing above your tent when you are camping. Why, oh, why do they do that???!
Chuck--Maybe that baby bird was just trying to escape his screaming mother! I don't blame him if that's what it was.
