Fake Sea Turtle ROCKS!

Hey, do you know what that stupid sea turtle is good for in my pond??--a hatchery. Yep, we're expecting about a cabillion baby minnows! Yeah, great, 'cuz I need like a thousand more minnows in my life.

Every so often, I find a minnow acting strangely, darting into and out of a crevice, zipping this way or that. I've watched Finding Nemo enough to spot a Daddy Fish watching out for his offspring, and that is exactly what the minnows do--they dart to scare off predators from the zillions of eggs they have hidden somewhere. Little do they know that I found their hiding spot.

We've had tons of rain this past week, and I spotted the infamous fake sea turtle flipped over, it's plasticky underside loaded with the minuscule eggs of some wacky minnows. Wow, it is amazing to see those tiny black dots of life swimming in their see-through eggs. If you look carefully, you can see those black dots move, but you have to be really still, and look really close.

Who knew Fake Sea Turtle was good for something? Sheesh, and here I was trash-talking that thing. I guess I'll let it stay after all.

And while life begins on the underside of a fake plastic sea turtle, I'm sad to say my little handicapped fish swam to the Rainbow Bridge the other day. Apparently he must have walked there because we found him dead in the yard. Poor little friend, I will miss him.

Damn circle of life.

I thought you were going to say you hosed off the bottom of the sea turtle to get rid of that.

Uh, that's what I would do. So it's a good thing I don't have a pond.

p.s. 36 hours...

Your pond sounds like so much fun...there is always something new going on. I would have loved to have had one when my son was little ,so many good nature lessons! So sorry you lost your little "special" fish..

You said, "If you look carefully, you can see those black dots move, but you have to be really still, and look really close." Well Pally, I stared at that picture. I enlarged it and scrutinized it intensely. I spent a half hour doing that and never so the tiniest flicker of movement. Were you shining me on?

Okay. It was another neat post and very well done.

I'm so sorry about your loss of your fishy pally.

A moving tale of how a plastic pond ornament triumphs over life and adversity. sniff

Wow, I would have though that was mold and wiped it off. Too cool that you get to see a Nemo plot unfold in real life. Minus the shark. I won't let my kids watch the first part where his mom gets killed, it's so sad...

Is that the same stuff as CAVIAR?!?!!

Who knew a fake turtle could be a hotbed of fish fertility? Sorry to hear about your fish who hiked to the rainbow bridge....

Thanks for coming to my blog and helping to convince others I am not crazy!!

You have a strong attachment to your pond Lin. Maybe you are like God to the pond habitat... :P

That is amazing how much is going on right in your own backyard.

Maybe Hobbes helped handicapped fish along.....

Very cool about the little fish eggs.

CG--Nope! I love to see all the little fry invade the shallows. I think only a few make it to full grown anyway. Ah heck, what's another few dozen minnows?

Melodie--I knew that little guy wouldn't make it very long--he had some very odd things going on. At least I know I gave him a good life while he was here. It's never too late for a pond, pally. I'm probably more into it than the kids ever were.

Chuck--Well, it kept you busy for a few hours, didn't it???! Hahaha!!

Highway--There's always a silver lining or a soft underbelly, right? Who would have thought it on a fake sea turtle??! :)

Casey--Well, the frogs and other fish can eat the fry, so I guess the shark scene does really take place after all, I just don't see it happen. I knew it wasn't mold because of the perfect little eggs/bubbles. I also learned about fish eggs the hard way--after taking in a plant with them on there and the garden store lady just laughed a wicked laugh.

Daisy--I guess so, but I doubt there is a huge market for minnow caviar. I'll ask Hobbes to taste it for us. Eewwwwww!

Bossy Betty--I cracked up when I read your post because when it happens it is so darn confusing! I gave the kids a million questions before we figured out that they really didn't do anything to the table! Although I think my neighbors still suspect us in the breaking of theirs.

Vanilla7--Nope--I just marvel in what God does in that wee pond outside my door. It is daily miracles on the smallest levels. I like to just notice it and point it out to everyone else. :)

Tracy--See, that is the whole point! All this is happening everywhere and we don't even stop to notice. I love the earth and it's little miracles. :)

Violet--I wonder if anyone else even notices?? I love to go out there and see what is going on, although these days the pond has turned on me and is icky green. Too much rain wrecks havoc on the clear water and it drives me nuts! I can't see a thing!

Pricilla--Nope. We were gone on vacation and the kitties were inside. Also, the pond is deep in the center (3 feet) so animals can't really "fish" in there with that set up. The only thing we thought is that he died and somebody dragged his body out. He wasn't damaged though--just a Flat Stanley. :( He wasn't right from the start and I knew his life span would be compromised.

oh poor handicap fish. may he rest in peace or whatever it is that fish do when they cross the bridge

Who knew handicapped fish could walk? :D

And I started looking real closely at that photo to see movement before I caught myself just in time from being too bonkers!

Lin said...

Ann--They wait in peace until you meet them there and you both cross into heaven together. Criminy, I've got a zoo waiting for me!!!

Beaded Tail--I think he had a little help, unfortunately. But I do think he was dead before somebody decided to take him for a walk. Poor little guy--we knew he wouldn't live a long life. :(

I did the same exact thing that Chuck did...stare to see if I saw anything move. Duh!

You're like the Pond Whisperer. You've got skills!

Lin said...

Chocolate--Hahaha! I guess I need to be more clear on the photo thing. :) It's not me--it's the pond that provides the entertainment each day.

You know, it's a good thing I don't live near you. I'd probably be hanging around your pond all the time, staring at it. People would start wondering who that weird woman sitting by your pond was.

Petula said...

Wow, you're gonna be a grandma! That's a lot of little fish. Caught daddy red handed, huh? Well... like you said it's the circle of life. LOL. I'm glad the little fake sea turtle has some true purpose in the circle 'cause he really does enjoy your pond.

Lin said...

Janiss--I know what you mean! I go out to look at it ALL the time, even at night with my flashlight. There is always something brewing in there and I love to find it. :) I guess it's you and me who is weird.

Petula--I guess it's officially gotta stay now. It has some algae on its fins and I was gonna scrub it until I saw the eggs. Now I just go and look to see if they babies have hatched. :)

Agreed, It makes me want one and then I get overwhelmed so I just come here :)
