I escaped suburbia on Saturday to see this:
And then I saw corn.
Lots and lots of corn--and soybeans.
Row after row of green shoots erupting from the earth,
making the world seem orderly and safe. And beautiful.
and I started to ask questions.
Lots of questions.
Questions that poor Jerry had to answer instead of
relaxing in a comfy chair with a cool drink under the shade of a tree.
But he did, and did so patiently.
And I learned a lot about corn and soybeans, and erosion
and crop rotation.
And then I took photos of the corn.
I got down in the dirt
and aimed my camera low to capture the beauty of the earth,
while the rest of the group just watched......
and laughed
at the city girl in the field of corn.

Sigh... no one understands the positions a person will twist into in order to capture a good photo... except another photographer! ;) Laying flat on the ground, upside down, in the middle of a street, knee deep in a puddle... whatever it takes to get a good angle for the photo ~ am I right?
Looks like you had a happy day in the cornfield Lin!
xo Catherine
I love to watch crops grow. I used to be a country girl and made pocket money and later clothes and gas money working in the fields. Now I live in the suburbs but my horse is in the country and we ride beside fields of crops. It is comforting as well as beautiful. I love the shot you got.
Laugh? You would think the farmer would dance with joy at a city folk taking such interest in his passion...and then to make a photographic record of his talent's product. Sigh. ;-)
What a great way to relax...and get educated! Way to go by gettin' down in the dirt, to get the shot!
Kind of gives meaning to the phrase "Down and dirty" doesn't it? Very nicely done Lin! Looks a lot like my neighborhood, except your corn is a little further along.
I love farms and I would definitely talk for hours about crops. Glad you had such a great time (and being able to entertain the locals is just an added benefit).
The lady on the right, in the background, kinda walking around kicking the gravel - wonder what's going through her head.
Lovely. Now you have a better appreciation for the contentment I find living here in Cornfield County, Indiana.
I applaud your zest for learning.
"No day is wasted in which one learns something."
I love corn! Let's grill it and put some butter!
Its a luxury to witnessed such great view Lin :)
I go off on wild question tangents too. DRives my hubby crazy.
Try being a city girl running a goat farm....
Oh Lin, they're worried about you! LOL
I would have been in the dirt with you. The picture turned out lovely! I'm glad you got to get away for a while :)
Happy Tuesday,
Jen
Gotta love farm country. There's nothing like being in the great outdoors when it's not cluttered with buildings and traffic and smog. I would have been right down there in the dirt too
I don't know, I think Joe is going "yep, that's my wife with the booty in the air taking photos of corn." The other guys are just jealous!
you really have a gift of noticing and capturing images...mmmmmm
hugs my friend
I used to love corn, until I learned it's ALL now what they call "Roundup Ready" by Monsanto. Bio engineered to withstand all the chemicals put on it to kill weeds. Yup, worse than Crestwood water! And it's fed to cattle, and cows, pigs etc. It's in our cereal, gatorade, .... just about EVERYTHING we eat. Ask em about it next time. You'll never look at corn the same way again. Fran's Dad
:-D Lucky for me I grew up (well, my teenage years) in a house that was right next to a corn field. So, I've seen the beauty up close and on a regular basis. I need somewhere to explore so I can get some cool photos. As of late I haven't been too photographically inspired. Great shot.... love the one of you being laughed at. tahee hee hee
Hi Lin.
Hi there.
I am putting together a site called The Prairie Blogger. It's a consortium of blogs written in by Illinois bloggers.
I'm doing this with the intent of producing a listing of blogs so that we can support one another in our efforts and promote ourselves as Illinois bloggers.
If you would like to join me, I would love to add your site(s). I also have a page to display badges/banners from your business if you have one.
There is no charge for joining. All I ask in return is that you post an image, that I will send you a link to, on your site and submit by email to me a post to display at least once a month. You are welcome to post more often and your posts can be anything you have posted on your own site or something new.
Please let me know if you are interested and I'll add you to the listing!
Thanks!
Catherine--That is why I like to be alone with my camera and then I don't have to answer to anyone. It's hard to be creative with snickers in the background.
Highway--I like the country and the freedom you feel being so far away from everything. The blue sky and open field really caught our eye that day.
Jodi--He did. Jerry is in the center of the "fan" photo and I think he likes when we ask about such things. And I like to learn about what they do. It's a win-win. :)
Hot Rocks--I love going to the farm. It's just so nice to escape the city for awhile and all that craziness. And the corn is just so.....so....friendly. :)
Chuck--You got corn for neighbors too?! I'm jealous.
Anne--They couldn't believe our reaction to seeing all the stars too. We have stars, but only the really bright ones can be seen through the city lights. I guess we are very entertaining. :)
Grace--That's Tammy and she has as many questions about the farm as I do. I think she's kicking the rocks because she forgot her camera. ;)
Vanilla--I like to learn about things I am not familiar with. The farm has endless opportunities for me. We were in Indiana here. I wonder if we were near you??? You'll have to send me an email telling me where you are.
V7--That's my new nickname for you. :) I LOVE their corn and better yet, I'm gonna see if I can nab some edamame come July. They never eat the soybeans at that stage, so I guess I taught them something in return! ;)
Pricilla--Can't even imagine the learning curve on a goat farm! I'm not kidding when I say that I might surprise you one day. :)
Violet--Isn't that funny?? And it doesn't even bother me I'm so used to that reaction. Whatever. Who's having more fun???
Jen--I was really just holding the camera down and shooting blindly. I wanted to see what I got and it turned out pretty well. I wanted to play more, but you can see a crowd was forming.
Ann--It's only about 2 hours from here, but the land and the family is what regroups me when I'm frazzled. It was only for a day, but I am re-energized. :) It's funny how fresh air and space can do that to you.
Beaded tail--Joe is just used to the wackiness, I guess. :) Oh well, somebody's got to provide the laughs, right?!
Natalee--I notice a lot of things other people walk right by. And when I point them out, I get some odd looks. Whatever. I find joy in the midst of it all--that is all that matters. :)
Fran's Dad--Nothing is safe anymore. Not our air, not our water, not our food. But, I'm not sure of other options. What to do? What to do?
Petula--Yeah, it is easy to get out of the mode of looking at things a different way. I find when I'm busy I don't notice things as much. With 3 little ones, I can see why you haven't been motivated. Dust off the camera, pally!
I love that you got down on the ground for the photo! I would have done the same thing. Fields of crops growing(anything),is something we don't see in our area. Someday I would love to run through a field of tall grass!
Harriet--YES! I would love to join your group. I just hope that I can represent the state in a positive light for once! ;) Do I have to "pay to play"?? LOL! (kidding)
DJ--We just talked about running through a field of wheat! I guess it is more than just you who would like to do that. :) I love the perfect lines of crops that are all pretty much the same size. It was beautiful.
You should go back for a taste of corn picked and shucked and tossed into boiling water in just that amount of time. Nothing tastes better.
Lin - very sweet posting. I've lived my whole life in the suburbs of NY City and I get just giddy when I see the places that grow our food. Even the genetically engineered variety as Fran's dad pointed out.
I would have probably had the same questions since that stuff is so foreign to me. Corny, ain't it?
Marilynne--They bring it to us when we go on vacation with them! It is to die for!!! I think it is grown with pride and love. :)
Linoleum - Everything has something wrong or dangerous with it, but I've got to love the earth and it's green. I do. I love the earth, the farm, the blue skies, and the fresh air. I love escaping the city (like you) and I love the country. I can breathe there. :)
Casey--hahaha! I ask so many questions each time we go! But it is amazing what the farmers know and we don't. I like to learn about things I don't see or do regularly and they are willing to teach me. It's always an adventure--especially when they let us in the farm equipment for rides! Wheeeeee!
