I read his blog daily and soon got up nerve to contact him personally through email. We exchanged a few emails discussing this or that, and he gave me the encouragement I needed to finally get back to expressing myself through the written word--something I did and loved as a child.
We wrote of blogging and filters, and mostly about letting go and opening up to the outside world. I have to say, I thank Jon for pushing me onto that "rickety limb of doom", as I called it--he encouraged me to tread into waters unknown, with my heart open to the world. Or whatever little readership I had at the time.
I got the chance to meet Katz in person a year or so ago, he was in town for a book signing. I had a great time talking to him about photography and again, boundaries and filters. It was nice to meet someone who had such an impact on me--I wonder if he ever really knew how much he inspired me.
I no longer read Katz, for personal reasons. Sometimes we don't always agree with or like what others do and it makes it hard to like them after that. So, while I don't read him anymore, I do stop by his blog periodically just to see what's going on.
And I did that the other day.
I hadn't been there in long time, but he surprisingly wrote a line from a poem that he quotes often and that I have posted on the wall by my computer--it is Mary Oliver's "Mornings at Blackwater". It is a poem that Katz loves and it inspired me as well--brought me home, so to speak. I get emotional when I read this poem because it changed my life.
Mornings at Blackwater (Mary Oliver)It's funny how your life is fluid and changes with time like a river. It's odd on who comes in to change the course of things, makes you think a little differently, or who sticks a pebble in just the right place to make the current of your life move just a tad differently.
"For years, every morning, I drank
from the Blackwater Pond.
It was flavored with oak leaves and also, no doubt,
the feet of ducks.
And always, it assuaged me
from the dry bowl of the very far past.
What I want to say is
that the past is the past,
and the present is what your life is,
and you are capable
of choosing what that will be,
darling citizen.
So come to the pond,
or the river of your imagination,
or the harbor of your longing,
and put your lips to the world.
And live
your life."

It's a lovely sentiment.
Sometimes we we pull our inspiration from different sources, give it a mix with our spoon, and come up with or own recipe. And you my dear Lin have got the magical touch! :)
Lovely poem.

I am not a big poetry person but that was lovely.I can see why it is one of your favorites!
That poem made me think of the water samples I took from a pond in the small town where I went through school. I took the samples to the biology lab and looked at the microbes that infested that water. Thanks I'll go to the well and pump water from the deep--cool, clear and clean.
Thank you for sharing this inspiration - printed out the saying and added it to my journal.
Duck's feet sounds tasty... :)
Beautiful poem Lin.
Duck's feet sounds tasty... :)
Beautiful poem Lin.
Great poem. Not much into poetry, but I like that one a lot.
Great, great poem. I love her stuff. Everything I read from Oliver makes my head swim. Thanks for sharing this one.
Jen
Beautiful sentiment and one I hope I can live by. Thank you for sharing the poem and that little piece of you that is offer on the table each day.
Life is one big karmic milkshake.
Sorry I missed you yesterday...it was a bit busy around these parts ;)
I love the poem. It does speak to us all.
Pretty purple flowers...
Beautifully written. Love the poem as well. I hate to admit that I'd never heard/read it before now and can so relate and feel it. Your post and the poem kind of remind me of a "Christian" saying, 'Sometimes people or things are in our lives for a reason and sometimes just for a season.' That stream flows differently depending on the season. :-) Thanks for posting this.
I don't always understand poetry but that poem really got me. This whole post was just wonderful today Lin. It made me stop and wonder about all the twists of fate that I've experienced to get me where I am today and I'm thankful for all of them!
Love the poem and the thought behind it.
DG--I thought I would lose everyone about 2 paragraphs down. Thanks for sticking with me, DG.
Catherine--Thanks, pally, but I have to tell you that you inspire me with your photography. I like your photos and it makes me take a second look at mine. Thank YOU!
Melodie--I typically don't like poems either, but that one is pretty straight forward. I like the message a lot. I'm glad you read it and liked it too.
Chuck--I like the part about drinking water that was flavored by the feet of ducks--that is just my life in a nutshell. I remembered this as I watched Hobbes drinking out of the pond last night. I'm sure there are lots of microbes in there!
wardhouse--Hi, new pally! I'm glad you liked it too. I think it's important to remember you have choices in life. It just helps to know that, doesn't it?
Vanilla7--That's my favorite part too, Vanilla7! Yum! I thought of this while I was watching Hobbes drinking out of my pond--flavored by frogs and snails and such. :)
Lola--I don't like poetry either, but this one means a lot to me. I like how it encourages one to take chances. We all need that message every now and then, right? :)
Jen--I figured if anyone would like it, it would be you! :) I have a small book of her poetry--the only poetry book I own. I like how she writes.
Highway--Sometimes I like to look back to see how I got here. I guess Katz and Oliver both encouraged me to climb out on my limb of doom in spite of my fears. I'm glad I tried. :)
Pricilla--Isn't it wonderful?? I love that I met you and so many other pallies through this experience. It's funny how I can tell people I have friends from all over. :) AND I am an aunt to lots of goats!! (That's my favorite part)
Marilynne--I think if you are a blogger, that poem really speaks for what we do. Katz's message is to "send your message to the world" and I agree wholeheartedly! No matter what our message is, it deserves to be heard....and sent. :) Glad you liked the poem, pally.
Grace--GRACE!!! What about the poem??! Or that I don't read Katz anymore???! Don't you want to know???! Flowers.....sheesh. ;)
Petula--Oh, I LIKE that a lot too. Especially the part of "only for a season"....how true. There are lots of people who come in, toss a pebble, and keep moving. It is the acceptance of that idea that is hard. They don't always have to stay. :) Yeah.
Beaded Tail--I'm glad you liked it too. It reminds me to trust in me and what I have to say and to "send my message to the world" like Katz says. I'm not typically a poetry reader, but I do have a small book of Mary Oliver's poetry--I do like her thoughts. She's pretty easy to follow most times.
Ann--I don't typically read poetry, but this one just came to me at a time that I needed it. I like the water flavored with duck's feet--that's my favorite part. :)
A nice poem with a very good message. I can see why you like it so much.
I can see why you like the poem -- and how perfect for you. Not only is it a great sentiment, but it's about a pond!
Lovely poem. Inspiration can come from anywhere I am late to learning.
I answered the xanthan gum question over on my blog for you :)
Hey Lin ~ to answer you question on my blog ~ you are so sweet with your comments on my photos. Nope ~ no lessons ~ just lots of practicing. Honestly ~ sometimes I take 20 photos of the same thing and only get 1 good shot out of them. And as for the 'fancy' photo stuff ~ photoshop!!! Love it! I actually bought the newest version (Photoshop Elements 8) for my new iMac. I just missed it too much! :)
You have a wonderful day my friend!
xo Catherine
Ratty--Well it spoke to me at a time that I needed that message. It's funny how we get messages like that sometimes.
Dorian--Yeah. I like the part about the water being flavored by the feet of ducks. Mine is flavored by frogs and snails. :)
Stephanie--Oh good, I'm going over to see what the heck that is! It is strange where our messages of inspiration and encouragement come from. But who cares as long as we get them, right??
Catherine--How did you learn PSE?? Did you take a class or just putter? I have a book to learn it, but it just takes me so long!
No class ~ just many hours sitting at the computer tinkering with the program and my photos.
Hence my skin untouched by sunlight and a butt that needs control top pantyhose... :b (I don't know why I'm laughing at that...it's quite sad really...hahahaha!!)
Pretty purple flowers...
