It finally got warm enough for the fish to go out in the pond again. The fish are happily munching on algae and reacquainting with those pesky minnows, glad to be back in much larger waters. The inside tank is prison in comparison to the pond. I'm glad they are back out there again and I think they are too.
We have two fish now--one that is quite large and one that is....well....impaired. I think he is a product of inbreeding, but he is mentally impaired--swimming in circles constantly and does the oddest of things. This poor little guy is much smaller than his sibling and has definitely got something wrong with him.
The larger fish seems to know there is something wrong with this little guy, so she doesn't hang out with him much. It's kind of sad, really, so I think I'm going to break down and get the bigger fish a new friend. Goldfish are very social creatures and they need a friend or two. So, while little fish has spinning and big fish, big fish kinda needs somebody to do some fish stuff with and tell fish jokes to. Hence, the trip to Petsmart today.
They had better not make baby fish.
I have always wanted a turtle for the pond, but they are very difficult to keep from what I understand. Apart from the fact that they destroy all your plant life in the pond, they can also just up and walk away--something I'm not fond of after dropping $25 on a stinky turtle. They also have to have a water/land tank for the winter and quite frankly, I'm sort of sick of bringing in the fish as it is. I need to downsize responsibilities, NOT add them at this point. So, no turtle. Sigh.
And just for the record, Joe is very anti-turtle in the pond. Whatever.
To compensate for the turtle ambiance that I am lacking, I bought this little turtle that floats around in the pond all day. Okay, don't be pointing out that it is a sea turtle and a pond would never have a sea turtle because they live in the ocean and I have a freshwater pond--that's all they had at the garden store. So I am stuck with non-cohesive turtle ambiance. Sigh.
And while I'm sort of disappointed with the lack of turtle options at the local garden store, apparently the frogs think this turtle is just fine.

I want to be like frog and sit around sunning my back. I'm counting. Four more days!
My brother and I had pet turtles but they were land turtles and indeed one day they did wander off - for all I know they are still wandering around Queens to this day...
DO you think that frog is tryin' to impress all the lady frogs by crusin' the pond on his shiny new sports-turtle!
I have a soft spot for turtles!! Funny, but our turtles here seem very easy to keep. They're kinda neglected but are growing very well. Not one has escaped! Perhaps they thrive better in warmer climates.
Happy Monday!
It's been a couple years since a saw a turtle in this neighborhood. A couple of days later, a neighbor bragged about the great turtle stew his wife had made the night before.
I am quite taken by the skill and equitation of the frog on his mount. Apparently he has had years of turtle back training.
I think that is the best turtle to have...he can't get away from you and won't munch all your beautiful pond plants. And if the frogs like him...well then... :)
You are so right Lin ~ when the beautiful weather calls to us we should be taking advantage of it. The blogasphere understands ~ plenty of cold and rainy weather will come to catch up with our friends!
Take care friend!
xo Catherine
omg.. i am amazed... this city girl Loves this!!!!
I think your sea turtle looks nice in your pond. Maybe he needed a change from the salt air!
And if you need to take time off to enjoy the sun, you do it! We'll all be here waiting when you get back, all warm and tan with grass between your toes! :)
Jen
Jodi--I am jealous! Oh, to have the summers off! :(
Grace--The frogs wander off, but I only pay like $3 for a tadpole--not a big monetary loss there. But $25??? Uh, no. Now I have a mental image of your turtle flagging a cab down. Thanks.
Melodie--Hahaha! Maybe! ;)
Veronica--I think they do better in tropical areas. If they hike away here, it is a death sentence as water is blocks away and the path there is like "Frogger". A good outcome is not likely.
Chuck--OH NO! I don't know how you eat a turtle. Unless, of course, you are starving. Same goes for frog legs.
Highway--Ha! Good one!! :)
Catherine--Yeah, but he just floats. I want a little slider that suns himself on the rocks and plops in when he's had enough. Sigh. But with that just comes more work. I guess you are right.
Natalee--Hee! Hee! Believe it or not, this IS the city! We live in the suburbs of Chicago.
Jen--Yeah! They do migrate, don't they??! Why do garden supply stores make sea turtles?? That is so dumb.
Hey, whatever makes you happy.
That's what it's all about.
I think a turtle that can't run away is a good idea! It truly warms my heart to see how much enjoyment you get from your pond each year. :)
I had to scroll back up and see the fake turtle since I thought he was real the first time I looked. Great substitute, Lin.
And btw, I stop for turtles all the time, lots of gators and turtles in our area. Want me to send you a turtle? Or a gator? How about a toddler?
It's a commuter turtle! At least he's multi-talented.
I think he's pretty cute even though he is a sea turtle.
We have wild turtles in our yard. They winter under one of our out buildings. Our dog checks every morning to see if she can spot one. If she does she gives him a big ole slurpy kiss and moves on. One of these days he's going to take a nip out of her tongue.
Frog went a-courtin', and he did ride, Uh-huh,
Froggy don't need no high priced turtle...lol
I like your little sea turtle! Looks like a great compromise to the real thing considering the work involved and the frog seems to enjoy it too. Hope your new fish work out too!
Watch out for those goldfish. My girlfriend had 2 and then suddenly she had 20.
I'm crackin' up at that frogger image. lol!
Pricilla--Now if I can just get the rest of my bunch to understand that!
Violet--It does harbor some great blog posts, Violet. Who knew?!
Casey--No, no, no! He's a SEA turtle!! I used to have a better fake one, but he dried up and rotted. :( I miss that turtle--he was real looking! Oh, and I'll take one turtle, two sweet babies, and hold the gator, please.
Chocolate--I'm amazed that the frogs can get on top of that thing! They do it all the time, but it still cracks me up when I see them on there.
Ozark Mtn Cats--Awww, that is so cute! Hobbes looks for the frogs to make them jump in. They make a little "eep" sound and apparently he likes that. Goofy animals!
Ann--Uh huh, uh huh. :) I'll bet Duke would like the pond. Do you think he'd swim in it??
Beaded Tail--I used to have a more realistic fake turtle (does that make sense?), but he rotted. Sigh. You just can't get a good turtle these days. Sheesh.
Lola--Well, how do you think my little inbred guy came along??? My fish did the same thing--bred like the dickens!! Both of my fish are born from a long line of fish in our pond. That's what keeps me from getting another fish.
I love your sea turtle! Hey, if you're happy, Joe's happy and the frog is happy, who needs the real thing?
I hope they not procreating there... Can't imagine the result... Frogtle? or Turog?
Hey - a floating turtle. That's cool. Never saw one of these before. And your froggy sure has the right idea!
He may be a sea turtle, but he's pretty cool. :)
I'm struggling with the same thing - it calls my name.
Janiss--But I'm not really happy with the "sea" turtle--it's too fake. :( I'm on a quest for a better turtle--THEN I'll be happy.
Vanilla7--I don't even want to think about it! I'm hoping he's just being silly and going for a ride.
Duni--Yeah, it just adds ambiance to the pond, but it's just too fake. I'm gonna have to see if I can find a better turtle.
Storm--Oh, I think he's sort of hokey, but he'll have to do until I find a better turtle. We used to have one but he fell apart. :(
The frog on turtle picture is pretty cute.
