A Little Sunday Morning Drama

Early Sunday morning, I opened the front door to grab my newspaper before the neighbors saw me in my jammies, and this is what I saw. Hobbes stalking yet another helpless victim:

DUCKS!!

Big, giant, pterodactyl-sized, loud-quackin',
obnoxious DUCKS!

Hobbes was nearly peeing his pants from the thought
of grabbing one of these bad boys. What he was going to do with a duck,
I don't know,
but he was thinking about grabbing 'em.

Hobbes defeated.

Somehow, they spotted his Orange Stripeyness and took off before he could even think "Duck Dinner". Although he is a stealth hunter, his giant orange ottoman-like body is hard to disguise--no matter how large the landscaping.

He was honestly thrown by the thought that they could take off like that and leave him high and dry. (Check out his "The hell?!" ear he's got going on here.)

Another hunt foiled. Poor Hobbes.

Ah, Duck for l'Orange. Not. Poor Hobbes, indeed.

OMG! Those ducks look like the ones that used to come visit our backyard every morning last summer. We named them Fred and Ethyl. We never let the cats out during that time, though. Too risky.

Better luck next time, Hobbes! And don't be sad. The fun is in the hunt!

Better luck next time Hobbes! (Though I really wouldn't want him to catch the ducks ~ just tease them a bit!) Ha!

He is so awesome!! He needs his own show on TLC or Animal Planet!! LOL!

Ducks?!! Where did they come from?

Poor Hobbes! Lucky ducks!

Oh, while we're on the subject of ducks, what does 'quack-up' mean? I read that a lot but don't know the meaning.

Helene said...

Vanilla-Why don't I ever think of awesome comments like that?

Jo-we got the blog so can the tv show be far behind?

Lin-I'm only about 20 miles north of you-how do you get gorgeous ducks in your yard and how do you get green grass? My lawn looks like a prairie with the dandelion stems 10 feet high.

Ok back to letting Lin do the comments :-)

That is so funny. We live across from a lake and every now and then we'll get the ducks and geese taunting my dogs.

My kitties are very very envious...

Somehow I think the ducks would have won...No offense to Hobbes.

I have seen cat v duck and duck usually wins.
heh

Better luck next time, Hobbes. Although I think they're cute, so you should leave them alone. Just sayin.

The folks next door acquired a chicken as a pet. And then let said chicken have the run of the fenced in back yard. At first my one cat Pirate thought this was a new plaything, but they actually became friends. I can't see the ducks being nearly so friendly.

Dream big, Hobbes!

You just need to plant a few orange colored shrubs for the poor guy. He is not camouflaged properly for bright green landscaping.

I am laughing so hard I am crying! God I love that cat. He should be a reality show

You really MUST stop snapping photos of your lawn. I'm foaming at the mouth with insane jealousy. lol. Please reveal your secret, great master, for such a luscious carpet of turf. I figure part of the secret concoction might be no flooding? (We have had 1-3 feet of flooding here multiple times over the years *sob*).

Hobbes is cute. I have an orange stripey cat. He's so old that he cannot meow anymore; he quacks like a duck. What an embarrassing irony, eh?

Helene--You would have loved it, Helene. He just cracks me up! Everyday is a new adventure with Hobbes.

Vanilla--Hahahaha! Good one, Vanilla!

Kathy--For the ducks or the cats?? :) I swear that female was gonna get him if I didn't keep an eye out for him.

Catherine--I think that female would have done him in. She was soooo mad at him!!

Jo--If he had his own show, it would definitely be a comedy. There's no drama with Hobbes!

Veronica--We have lots of forest preserves around here with lakes and such. They flew in and flew out--much to the chagrin of Hobbes.

Veronica--I think it is a play on words--Ducks make the "quack" noise and it is a silly way of saying "crack up" (laughing).

Helene--We have a small lot, so taking care of the lawn really doesn't take much money or effort. I can cut both lawns in under an hour--start to finish. And because we don't have any trees, the grass is lovely this time of year.

Harriet--Oh good, Hobbes isn't alone in his torment! That female was giving Hobbes the business--she didn't like him one bit!

Grace--He knew to keep his distance though. Somehow I think he knew she'd get him if he chased them. She was quacking up a storm at him!

Pricilla--Yep, I think you are right. That female wanted no part of Hobbes.

Cute--Do you have experience with that??! I think you are right--those ducks weren't going to tolerate any kitty chasing them. I stood there to make sure HE was safe from the ducks--I was thinking like you were.

LJ--No, I don't think they were going to tolerate Hobbes wanting to play. That female was gonna get him if they didn't decide to fly off.

Daisy--That he was!! I think he needed Harley's help to wrangle those ducks.

Highway--I'm not sure there is a bush big enough to hide Hobbes! I love how he was crouching down so they didn't see him. :)

peewee--He's a goof alright. He makes me laugh everyday, peewee.

Hobbes is just so cute! Was he to the wiggle butt stage? It's good he didn't catch them though but he probably has duck dreams now!

Lin said...

Beaded Tail--He was just hunkered down and was chattering up a storm, but no butt wagging. I think he knew better than to wage a full attack on those two!

Ann said...

Oh I could just imagine what Duke would do with ducks, or maybe I would just rather not think about that. Did Hobbes at least get a good consolation prize

JODI said...

I'm thinking Uli has a great recipe for Orange Duck that she would love to help Hobbes whip up. The hunting lessons are free ;-)

Karen & Gerard Zemek said...

Hobbes is an awesome cat! He is quite brave to go after big ducks. My cats never met a duck so I don't know if they would be interested in them or not.

VanillaSeven said...

I didn't know Hobbes wear pants. He supposed to wear boots....

Lin, you mean you out to collect newspaper everyday in PJ and with a camera hanging on your neck? :D

Lin said...

Rebecca--My secret to a great lawn is that my lot is only like 50' x 110'--you can't screw up anything that small!! We can fuss a ton over it and it takes like an hour! :) We also don't have trees, so spring and fall it looks great. Summer--it's a little dry. I like your quacking cat. :)

Ann--Hobbes was SO excited to see those ducks--you should have heard him chattering at them! He was very disappointed when they flew away.

Jodi--I think he needs help as Hobbes is not a good hunter. Although that is probably a good thing.

Karen--Ducks are pretty big and this female was quacking up a storm to ward him off. I think he was terrified of them! Maybe that is a good thing.

Vanilla7--Hahahaha! He actually makes a face that we call his "Puss 'n Boots face" from the movie Shrek! And yes, that camera is handy at all times. Doesn't every good photographer wear their camera all the time????

Reminds me of the kitties and ducks at the hospital where I used to work. The ducks were meaner than the kitties. They would go after the kitties so the kitties totally ignored them.

Sparkle said...

Poor Hobbes - in that green grass, he stands out like a sore thumb! If I lived nearby I would give him one of my freeze-dried duck hearts as a consolation prize.

June Zach (Fledgling Blogger) said...

Too bad Hobbes! Do better sneaking next time! LOL

Funny post! I like it a lot!

Lin said...

Chocolate--I would have loved to have seen that! I'll bet those ducks were mean and I have a feeling this female would have gotten Hobbes given half a chance. I stood there watching--to protect Hobbes. :)

Sparkle--It's the kitty's little get-even, eh? :)

JuneZach--I'm not sure if he's sneaking or hiding!

Storm, The Psychotic Housewife said...

Too funny! I bet his eyes were really bugging out, too.

Lin said...

Storm--Yep! And he was chattering at them the whole time!
