So, if you are looking for me, you can find me with my nose stuffed into those teeny tiny blossoms--enjoying their teeny tiny gift of the most lovely fragrance. Some things are just so worth the wait.

Sniff 'em while you can
On the side of my house I have an arbor and 3 trellises that host a viney plant called schisandra. It is a lovely twisty-stemmed vine that blooms the tiniest of flowers that smell just heavenly--problem is that the blossoms last for all of about 4 days out of the whole year.
These next four days are the one and only time that I actually just stand on that side of the house inhaling. The rest of the year it just smells like dog poop because the neighbors don't believe in picking up after their dogs. Sigh.
So, if you are looking for me, you can find me with my nose stuffed into those teeny tiny blossoms--enjoying their teeny tiny gift of the most lovely fragrance. Some things are just so worth the wait.

GAAAAKKK! Hate neighbors that don't clean up their dog's poop!
One time, my mom picked up all the neighbor's dog poop that was on our lawn and threw it over the fence onto that neighbors front step....that dog never pooped on our lawn again... :)
Have a lovely day Lin!
xo Catherine
My MIL has horrible neighbors and when she used to scoop her yard she always flung a pile or two on their roof...!
Many of Spring's pleasures are short-lived; so we appreciate them all the more-- and have a whole year to wait for them to arrive again.
Enjoy.
In a way I'm glad our condo management prohibits dogs in the premises ( but they should really make an exception for cats 'cos their poop is never seen) but occasionally I still see dog poop in the playground. Some people are SO inconsiderate.l
I like frogs - their tummies are just so soft and velvety...If the opportunity presents itself - rub a frog's tummy...
That last sentence is so pregnant with meaning. At times the air around here is rich with the smell of poop. It is spread on the fields to grow the stuff that ends up on my table. Or as my friend the hog farmer says, "That's the smell of money." Dog doo is another story.
I had no idea what a schisandra is and not being in the mood to discuss dog poop I looked it up. So not only does it product a very cute flower and a beautiful fragrance is a herb as well:
"Ancient Chinese described the herb as a stimulant, astringent, antiseptic and many other things. They have used schisandra traditionally to heal various ailments, and lately Chinese physicians have begun to apply schisandra as a remedy for hepatitis."
So wow, it is magical.
Oh, you're making me so wistful for what you're experiencing! I love that little froggy sittin' there too.
But where is our picture Lin? Can't you call the county about the dog poop next door? They ought to be required to clean up once in a while.
How heavenly.
Sniff a few for me, OK?
I haven't heard of those flowers before but it's a shame they only bloom for about 4 days a year. Hope you enjoy them before having to go back to the smell of dog poop!
enjoy the 4 days of heavenly scent and then skidaddle back to another part of the yard before the dog poop starts in
I watched a program on 11 about the Hubbel Telescope detailing the expansive billions and billions of miles of outer space, galaxies, and solar systems out there. Then there is the teeny flower right here on earth. Fran's Dad
I see a green rock with legs! I have a rose bush that I hate, hate, hate for 51 weeks a year to the point where I want to rip it out. But for that one week, it is beautiful!
Catherine--I hate dog poop too and that is precisely why I don't own a dog. So why is it then, that I have to smell somebody else's dog poop? And how do they not smell it?? Ugh.
Melodie--I don't think these folks would notice, but I like the smelly roof thought. :)
Vanilla--Yep. I really do wait for this plant to bloom each year--as short as that is. :)
Veronica--I don't know how these folks stand the smell. We had to call the police one year--it was a health hazard. I would be furious with poop in the playground.
Grace--I actually caught a frog the other day in my net (on accident). I was touching his little hand until he realized who was holding him--then he plopped back in the water. He didn't think it nice that I touched him. :(
Chuck--I expect it out in the country, but not on 60 foot lots in the city. We had to call the police one year--it was a health hazard. Ugh, I hate neighbors.
Highway--Hey, good work there! I've heard they use it for medicinal purposes, but didn't know for what. Should I be smoking it??? ;)
Violet--I like to just stand there and smell the sweetness. But I also like the flowering trees this time of year too. Too bad they aren't like that all summer.
Buggys--I took some photos today for you--I knew somebody was going to ask. We did call the police one year because it was a health issue, but it just goes back to the same thing. If we call the police, then WE are the problem according to the neighbors. We are supposed to just suck it up and deal. That doesn't work for me.
Pricilla--I wonder if they taste as sweet as they smell?? I'm not doing THAT for you, Pricilla. LOL!
Beaded Tail--Oh, mid-summer it starts to smell just grand. Ick. I can't open my side door on that side for the smell. I don't know how they live that way.
Ann--We don't have large yards here, so it is sort of hard to ignore. And if we say something, WE are the difficult neighbors. I can't figure that part out.
Fran's Dad--Yeah, the world (and beyond) is wondrous, isn't it? :)
Sharky--See, I'd be yanking that bad boy. If I don't have some joy in the plant the rest of the year, it's a goner. This vine is all twisty and turny and makes a beautiful winter accent as well as a pretty green vine the rest of the year. That is the saving grace and so I keep it.
I love flowering plants but we can't have a lot of them in our yard. Too many deer. Maybe you could post a photo for us deprived individuals.
I thought you going to sniff that frog when I saw your title and picture Lin :D
Say no to uncivilized dog poos
Anne--Oh, those darn rascals. I don't have deer in my yard, but I hear they are just awful, eating everything in sight. Hang tight--I'll post more spring flowers.
Vanilla7--LOL! I just realized that myself! No--I draw the line at sniffing frogs!! :)
Lucky you I get to smell a pile of rotting duck eggs plus all their poop. Your pond is lucking good and loved the dragonfly.
That was suppose to be looking not lucking, my fingers just type whatever they please.
enjoy! :)
That's one vital thing the internet lacks - the ability to smell what the other person is blogging. Would love to know what that flower scent is. On the other hand, maybe a scent-less World Wide Web is not such a bad thing, considering everyone seems to be focusing on the dog poop.
Jude--Oh no! Not the ducks again!! Those poor things. I'm sure they don't want to live with that either. That makes me sad to think they are living like that. :(
Peewee--:) I'm trying to. Some days it is harder to ignore the neighbors than others.
Janiss--I'm thinking no smells is probably a good thing on the internet. Imagine what those spammers would send us!!
What a great story!! I have a similar plant: Daphne Carol Mackie, that will bloom shortly, and just for a short while...and it also has a wonderful scent. Isn't it a shame these wonderful bits don't last longer?? too bad about the city/concentrated poop...I cannot imagine that in the high heat of summer...poor Lin....
Will Oaks--I have a garden rule that if a certain plant offers more work than joy, I rip them out. It's funny how this plant's 4 days of glory keeps me hanging on. :)
