Cesspool-B-Gone

A month ago the pond looked like this:

After a little water change,
some good bacteria,
and turning on the pump,
we've got this:

Cool, eh?

I'm excited to see the first lily pads of the season. They start off as little red leaves, but slowly grow larger and more green. That too, will help keep the water clear as the sunshine is what creates the algae blooms.

Next step, the water plants go in when there is no more danger of frost and the fish go in. And even though the weather has been mild, we typically wait for this until mid-May. In the meantime, I watch the minnows dart around and laugh at the frogs sunning themselves.

I can't wait to have a pond someday! Did you build yours?

Our pond looked like the first one about a month ago. Now that the weather has gotten warmer, the biologicals are working correctly and I can see all my Koi made it through winter.

A sign of happy times a-comin'! How is it going today?

Looking good. Won't be long. I've always wanted one of those things.

Karen--There are some summers though, where it stays green. The fish love it, but I don't. :)

Jennifer--Yep. It is one of the best things we have added to the house. It does take some work though, but it has been worth it for me.

Highway--Hooray! I have fancy goldfish, so they are still in the house for now. Although the minnows are partying out there--a lot made it through the winter.

Pricilla--There is a big frog out there sunning himself as I type. There are only 2 frogs from last year--looks like I need some tadpoles.

DG--Yep! And tadpole time! I only have 2 frogs left from last year.

Buggys--It's going...and going....and going. :) The worst part is that I'm starving!!!

Ann--Oh, I love the pond--there is so many little creatures who come because of it. It is amazing on what life it harbors.

That is pretty...where do you buy lily pads?

Diana--The nighttime temps are still dancing with freezing temps some nights. You'd be surprised on how quickly the water temp drops when it is so cold at night.

Grace--You buy water lilies at the garden store. It is a plant submerged in a pot at the deepest part of the water. It's little leaves (lily pads) shoot up from the plant to reach the sun. We cut it back in the winter and it stays submerged all year round. You can see it in the photo if you enlarge it. And yes, it blooms some lovely white flowers too!

Are the plants and fish new every year or do you keep them inside? I've always wanted a water garden, but with water rationing, I just don't think it's time to do it.

The pond does look so much better and it'll be so fun to have the fish back again soon! Hope all the frogs are okay!

Another sign that Spring has sprung.

One question - does the sound of running water (from your pond ) keep you awake at night?

My parents' neighbour had a miniature pond and it used to make we wanna go to the toilet all night long.

Missed ya, Lin!!

I live in Los Angeles, so we don't have a pond, we have... a jacuzzi! And sadly, it looks not unlike your first photo. We never use it and I'd almost rather have the pond (except it does sound like a lot of work).

Only 2 frogs? Sad. And there isn't any way you can bring them in for the winter?
