You know spring is coming when the tennis team starts practicing. Okay, so it's
March and yes, snow is still on the courts, but you've got to start training early in high school sports. So, they shovel the courts and brave the cold to start hitting again. And no, gloves are not allowed---something about flying rackets as trajectories not being a good idea.
I'm not only hoping for spring, but for a
warm spring. Last year, Joe and I sat through the whole season in winter coats, hats, gloves and blankets. Nothing like bundling up like Nanook of the North to cheer your kid on. Ugh. Is it too much to ask for a bit of warmth in spring?

So, Col is on the tennis team--in the cold--while Em chooses a climate-controlled sport this spring-----badminton. This is her freshman year on the team, so we have a lot to learn about this sport, coach, and team. Will she like it? Will she be any good at it? I don't know. Only one word keeps coming to mind--"indoors".
Have I mentioned that I love that kid?

Must teach Nanook of The North how to play tennis... or table tennis is you prefer indoor :)
Badminton is the only sport I can play besides swimming. Some of the top players in the world are from Malaysia.Interestingly, did you know that Thomas Cup Champion Soo Beng Kiang is my neighbour!!
YES! I love climate control. You have raised a very bright girl there Lin!
Smiling here . . . Granddaughter does water polo. In a warm pool in a warm room. Season is about to start. Good luck with that tennis thing, and hope the badminton works out for Em.
Hi Lin! Thanks for the cheering on my blog! I need it :)
I used to play softball and I HATED practicing in the cold. When that ball connected with the metal bat I thought I'd broken both arms!

Oh how I love tennis!! I just wish I still looked as good in those adorable skirts. Oh, youth is SO wasted on the young!
(I can't believe I just said that)
(when did I turn into my mother?!?!)
I checked our 7-day forecast - one of the days, I forget which, said "warm and sunny" Can you believe that? And it is next week!
Badminton, huh. We used to play that when I was a kid - bought the set in Woolworth's, played without the net - whacking the birdies around, and back and forth, as we walked - course we played tennis too - against any walls we could find - kinda like handball with a big extra hand - I'm not too sure it occurred to any of us that the nets were an integral part of the game - ah, city kids, what do they know.
Enjoy the warm and cozy badminton games...
Badminton sounds interesting? I picture everyone standing right next to the net but maybe that's because I could never hit that thing very far. But she is very smart to pick an indoor sport!
I can't wait for spring. Another cold front headed for SouthFlorida. Only 56deg here @12:57pmest.
I can't "play" anymore, but I still love to watch!
Came to also, drop along with a comment. No widgit? What Happin? Come over to my place for a chat 8>)

Can't say I know much about badminton except for always laughing at shuttlecock as an adolescent
Hello, I’m just stopping by to say thanks for your continued participation. I have you listed on my “Favorite Places” page at my blog. http://goaskkatie.blogspot.com Hugs! Katherine
Yes, tennis is cool; but this time of year: way cool.
Two of my kids coach tennis in S. Ind. and they are so keyed about the start of the season. Good for them; and for Col and Em.
Vanilla7--Yes! I never thought of table tennis--I'll tell Col to switch his sport!
Veronica--Wow! You live with famous people??! I am very impressed. Wait until Em hears! See if you can sneak some badminton tips out of him for Em, okay??
Buggys--I'm gonna love it when I'm watching in warmth! Yes!
Chuck--I hear the badminton team is VERY competitive, so we'll see how that works out. Happy Polo season! I'll be anxious to hear how Brianna's team does this year.
Jen--That's what Col says--that it stings to hit the ball. I'm still wondering why they can't wear a batting glove or something on their racket hand--it is soooo cold.
Peewee--No kidding! I used to skate back in the day and I used to love my skating skirt. Sigh. If I had known what I know now, I would have worn that thing EVERYWHERE!
Grace--Badminton is uber-competitive and not the silly game we used to play in the yard. I guess it is tough to make the team, so I'm hoping Em can do it. And I had to buy an expensive racket too! Can't use the ones from the garage. :(
Beaded Tail--Oh, they are smashing that thing from far away and into each other's faces! It is very competitive and not what you would imagine it to be. I think I'll be picking the cold days to watch her compete and save the warm ones for Colin and tennis.
Don--I dropped EC as of 3/1. No time to drop anymore and I'm relishing the freedom! I hope you still come to visit. And don't complain--56 degrees is SUMMER here! LOL!
Pricilla--I love badminton! I encouraged her to try out, so I hope she makes the team. I always liked it because you don't have to chase the ball as much as in tennis. When it lands on the ground, it stays there. :) Other than that, it is very wicked and very competitive.
Katherine--Thanks for the link! I'm going to have to join your social site now to find great new blogs. I'm looking into alternatives to EC. I'll be stopping in still. :)
Vanilla--It is silly how early they start here. They are literally playing while it is snowing sometimes. Ugh. Let's hope for a warm spring!
I remember sitting through the early season little league games with three layers of clothes and a blanket. I would love a kid who picked an indoor activity :)
Well ~ if you have to watch a sport it is so much better to watch one that takes place in a climate controlled building!
Bowling anyone? :) (GAAAAKKK ~ except then you have to wear the ugly bowling shoes!!!)
Ann--Little League was bad because you nearly froze at the beginning of the season and melted at the end of it. Oh, what we do for our kids! Uh, just for the record--this will be my very first INDOOR sport! Yes!
Catherine--I'm wondering if you can cheer at a badminton match. Hmmm.... Well, I'm going to, even if nobody else does. And I'm gonna be warm doing it!!
Yay for an indoor sport. Brrrr for the outdoor sport.
I'm not very enlightened on badminton so I think I'd have to read a book to figure it all out. I hope she does really well in it.
No way. Your kid has a school with a badminton team? That's cool; it's like tennis meets volleyball. I love playing badminton but I want to spell it bad-mitten but I see that's incorrect.
You're so educational over here, Lin.
Lin - You are a very supportive mom. I think you log more hours riding the bleacher seats than anyone I know. It doesn't make your butt flat, does it?
I didn't even know badminton teams existed! I LOVE playing badminton, seriously love it!
Indoor sports are def my favorite. Softball in the spring/early summer and football in the EARLY fall...can't stand it too cold or too hot or I'm cheering from the car O_O
Em is a girl after my own heart. Yea for climate control!
Chocolate--I used to play in high school, but in gym and not on the team. It is very similar to tennis, but they score differently. I can't wait to see her in action!
CG--Badminton is extremely competitive now. We had a team when I was in high school and I would have joined except all the prissy girls were on the team. Uh, I wasn't prissy enough.
DG--I'm one of those moms that goes to everything. I won't ever be rich because I don't work full-time, but I've got team spirit. Does that count?? And no, bleachers do not flatten your butt unfortunately. They freeze your butt, but never shrink it. :(
Violet--I love it too! I wanted to play in high school, but the girls were way too prissy for me. Now it is uber-competitive and hard to make the team. I'm very excited that Em is doing that. I can live vicariously through her.
Roschelle--I have sat in freezing temps, snow, and freezing rain for the marching band, so I can do almost anything. We've melted at soccer and little league games and frozen at football games. It's tough being the mom! But I wouldn't miss any of it for the world!!!
Merry--This will be my very first indoor sport--I can't wait!!! To think I'm gonna be comfy in my chair---ahhhhhh. :)
Like Nanook, huh? lol! Watch out where those huskies go, don't you eat that yellow....
