I was cracking up this morning as there were a few mumble and grumbles about the workplace circulating around the coffeepot. Oh, there was some issue or that and a few folks were grumping. I happened to be going by and had to add in my best Pollyanna voice "I like working here. And do you know why?"
"Why?" was the half-hearted required response from someone.
"Because we don't have to work with Killer Whales!" And they all looked at me like I was nuts. Sometimes they don't get me, but I don't care.
I mean, really, you may think your job sucks, but there is never a day when I'm gonna get grabbed from my desk and eaten by a killer whale like that dame at Sea World. Now that is a tough job. And you have to get wet--a lot. I don't think I would like that very much. And getting eaten on the job would really suck, wouldn't it?
So, while I sort of stumped the crab-fest over in the lunchroom, I was thinking about how little it takes to make me happy. And why does it take others so much more?
There has been a Kohl's bag sitting on my kitchen floor for nearly 2 months now. Not much of a shopper, I literally think that bag has been there since after Christmas, which is odd for me. I am meticulous about my house and nothing sits out for more than 3 days--2 months is unheard of around this place.
The bag sits there because it is Grace's favorite thing in the world. Well, maybe second after the new feather-on-a-stick-thingy I bought for the kitties, but it is definitely the highlight of her life, that bag. She sits on it, she taps it, she climbs in and out of it, and she wrestles it. She even threw up on it the other day--to which I washed it off and put it back down for her. I wake up in the middle of the night to a sound which sounds something like a typewriter, but it is Grace tippy-tapping her bag.
That simple bag makes Grace very happy, so I don't mess with the bag. In fact, my good friend, Wendy, actually brought me two new Kohl's bags to replace the tattered mess that is her bag.
So, like Grace, I find joy in the simple things. I like that I get free yogurt every day that I work. I like that Irene and I discuss last night's TV shows over the cube walls or that I actually get paid to write for a living. Okay, so I don't make a fortune or get benefits--I like that I have a job that I enjoy in an economy where jobs are scarce. And best of all? I don't work with killer whales.
It's the weekend, pallies. Go enjoy your lives a bit. Go look for the simple joys in your life--a warm fire, sunshine, a good book, or perhaps a nap. Go through your blogroll and actually catch up on your favorite blogs or spend some time with a friend.
Whatever it is that makes you happy, go do it. Be like Grace and go crinkle the bag of your life, my friends........... and enjoy.

aahh, the simple things. this is a great reminder to us all. i am going to enjoy them today and be thankful for them. the smell of my coffee brewing, the rise of the sun in my window, the beautiful smile of my grandbaby, the sound of her little laugh. i am going to enjoy all of those things today. thank you for the reminder.
have a great day...hugz!
Like you have a job I love. I love it even on the days that it seems like I am working with a killer whale--b/c kids can be like that sometimes you know. I plan to spend my weekend eating [just a few] GS cookies and visiting my Princess A at college... and I smile thinking about it all :-)
I love my job too!! LOL! Have a great weekend!!
Great post. Thanks!
The Shamu thing got me kind of bummed for some reason but that doesn't mean that it's too soon to use Shamu jokes. I used one last night, in fact! Great minds, Lin.
Your job sounds kickass, can I come work with you? Free lunch, zero screaming or sick kids in your face? Silence? A break room where you get to TAKE BREAKS? Sorry, it's been rough around here.
Glad to be back though, today was the first kid free morning I've had in over a week. And I'm spending it on your blog. :) I love Grace's shopping bag story and that you indulge her simple pleasures. You're a great mom, to cats and otherwise.
I love it when you share your wisdom, Lin. Too many people live with a constant spirit of dissatisfaction. Nothing would make them happy. And nothing is what they deserve.
Those who love their jobs are truly blessed. But it is mostly attitude, isn't it?
Suddenly I have the urge to stomp bubble wrap or maybe get a brain-freeze that comes with slurping a 7-eleven slurpee. These simple things make me very happy.
Heh. bag themes this week.
It's nice to see Grace getting some equal time.
Happiness is where you find it and some people really fail to look for it.
There is so much that we can learn from our cats. Especially a wise one like Grace. I'm enjoying the view out my window of falling snow. Trying not to think about the fact that I will have to clear the driveway which has a big drift across it. John Deere isn't free, but he works hard. A pat for grace and a skritch behind Hobbes' ears.
PJ--Oh, those are all good things! I forgot about the smell of coffee--mmmmmm. I like a little baby chuckle too. Enjoy, pally.
Jodi--Dang! My GS cookies are being delivered to the office today and I'm not there! Ugh. Well, enjoy your thin mints for me, pally. And have fun visiting your daughter!! How fun. :)
Jo--Yay! Weekend!!! Now that is something to celebrate right there.
Grace--Did you get your snow yet? I'm praying you don't get too much this time. Sigh.
Casey--Just being able to use the bathroom ALONE is a simple joy--I didn't go pee alone for years. Years!! So, enjoy your killer whale jokes and your time alone. It's a good thing. :)
Vanilla--Well, being happy with your job is tough because there are so many other factors that can make it a chore. I'm lucky because I make my own hours and that enables me to do the things I want to do as well. There is a salary trade-off for that, but it's the time with my family that matters. Most people don't have that luxury, so I count myself blessed. But the rest of it is attitude, you are right. I hope you are enjoying warm sunshine, pally.
Veronica--LOL! I would love to see you stomping bubble-wrap!! That is a good choice for fun, pally. Have a great weekend.
Pricilla--If you wait for big things to be happy about, you'll wait a long time. I'm with Grace--it is good to be happy with something little. (She does look a tad silly with that stupid bag though.)
Chuck--More snow?? Ugh. I'm off to a band concert and some housecleaning. But the payoff is relaxing this weekend. Hooray!
I love how you are singing today...and also how you helped me understand a cat thing here. I have a little open cardboard box with some plastic bags that didn't quite get put away. It's become a "cat nest" that gets sort of fought over. It must be the plastic...I didn't know! And yes, Red is very tolerant...up to a point, and then he gives as good as he gets! Purrmeister is just starting to learn to pull his punches. He's going to be a very very large kitty someday!
Great post.
I don't work, but sometimes I do feel like I'm up against a killer whale. Lol!
Will Oaks--I think cats like the crinkly sound for some reason. What that is, who knows!! I love your jewelry, but I love your kitty posts more. :) They are a fun bunch.
Lola--Can we count the teens as killer whales??
I just finished an 11 hour day of preparing tax returns and was pretty much fed up with my job but once again you helped me put things in perspective. I telecommute so I'm thankful I work from home with my furbabies - and out of ear shot of my boss! As for kitties and bags, we have two crinkle sacks - they're fabric bags that crinkle like those plastic bags - and the cats love them. I'd think they wouldn't like the crinkle noise but they do just like Grace!
Beaded Tail--Ugh, Tax season! You have the right to complain on that one--that is a LONG season of business. Maybe you need a crinkle bag too. :)
You said it Lin, it's those small things that make my day too! I am definitely happy I don't work with whales!
I made the mistake of buying one of those crinkle bags that sound just like plastic bags for our cats. All cute, it looked like a ladybug.
They want nothing to do with it. Plastic shopping bags with logos apparently are way better. lol
(More Grace photos, please!)
Seriously, you ought to join FF - it brings me about 40+ followers per week.
Sorry about the ad - bear with me pally. It has just started to generate some income for me and it might just buy me a ticket to Chicago!!
Okay, I will concede that I had no idea just how irritatingly happy you can be before. Thanks for making that obvious to me.
Lin, I"m so with you. There is almost always a silver lining - a bright side...the half full to the empty glass. People just like to bitch and it drains my energy. On the other hand doing what you did, hell even hearing that you did what you did raises my psychic/spiritual whatever you want to call it - energy.
Thanks for the lift today
I have a job I love too the only thing that ruins it is that there are other people who also have jobs there...lol Seriously though, good post and reminder that the little things are what keep us going
Storm--I learned the hard way--they only like certain crinkly bag sounds or they get scared. We bought an expensive tunnel made out of that stuff and it scared the crap out of the cats--it almost sounded like fire. I'm convinced the less you pay for your cat toys, the better they like them. No whales is a good thing, isn't it?? LOL!
Veronica--Oh, that explains that silly ad. Okay, I'll be patient. What is FF??
Fish--Downright giddy. I'm like freaking Pollyanna these days. LOL!
Tracy--I get that things can get pretty bad sometimes--I've been there. But if it is that bad, then you must leave or make the best of it. It's just funny how easily we can be down at work or school or wherever, just for the sake of conversation, so I like to say stuff like that to stir it up a bit. Some folks get it and laugh, others just look at me weird. Whatever. :)
Ann--Yeah, I get the co-workers thing. I've got one person that all they do is gloom and doom everything. Criminy, it is exhausting! Wish we had killer whales to eat that person. :)
Ahh the simple things :)
Enjoy that job that you love!!
Stephanie--I like working part-time for the hours, but not the pay. I realize it is a trade-off so I don't complain. Right now it works for me, but I'll never be rich.
You are so freaking funny! Killer whale. You do have a point.
I love that analogy about the bag. What's my bag? IDK. However, you must really love that kitty (as if I didn't know that) 'cause leaving a bag on the floor and then having extras is a true measure of pet love. :)
That is nice of you to let her have her bag. I do that for our cats too and my husband thinks it's nuts, especially since he does the cleaning the the box on the floor, their tent and sometimes a paper bag are in his way. Cats Rule though, don't they?
You make a good point about your job too. There are so many other jobs I would never, ever want to have and when I think about that, I am more than happy with the one I have.
I love the idea of Grace typing on her bag. Man, can you post a short video of that. That would be cool.
Petula--I always grow tired of it looking like garbage on the floor, but then you see her so happy on that darned thing and I just can't toss it. It is pretty cute. Oh, the things we do for our loved ones. Sigh.
Karen--Winter is always so boring for the kitties, so I tend to allow things likes boxes and bags to entertain them. Otherwise they are just battling. I used to do that for the kids too--winter is just hard on everyone. Good to hear that you do that too!
CG--But I'd have to get up in the middle of the night! Uh, NO! Well, I'll try if I see her doing that during the day. It is pretty funny to see.....and hear.
LOL, this post made me crack up! For one, your job sounds great! I have to make my OWN lunch.. when I have time. (And I work at home, even!). You are so right about job priorities, though-- although when I worked outside the home, I had a boss who was very Orca-ish. :S
I've also GOT to get some toys for Livvy (I'm procrastinating), but I don't dare get feather on a stick. We have a pet cockatiel, and I don't want Livvy to get a taste for feathers...
I love your attitude Lin! I love my job, too, and cannot imagine going back to the daily bump and grind off the ranch. I get so ticked off at people who gripe because they didn't get a big pay raise. Ummm, excuse me, you have a job, you didn't take a pay cut...WTH are you griping for people?! If you're unhappy with your job you should go try to find something else (and good luck with that). Sorry...I got sidetracked there...
At least we don't get eaten by whales. That's totally going to be the new motto in the cube farm I work in.
Awesome.
Rebecca--Yeah, NO feather toys! This one sounds like a bird flying by when you whip it around, so, no, probably not a good idea. I have to say though, I have never seen Grace act like a kitten with a toy before and she does with this.
Split Rock--I get that the economy is scary and that you can't just leave a job anymore, but we really don't have it that bad. I like to remind them that every once in awhile in a weird sorta way. AND it's good for a laugh.
Kathy--Yeah. It will make them think for a moment. :) But I'm thinking that folks who have birthday parties for plastic bags are totally gonna like the thought.
I think you have found the secret. Life is like a crinkley Kohl's bag. We can choose to see it as a chore- to pick up, put away, etc.- or as something to find humor or pleasure in. To a cat few things are better than a good noisy bag. I choose to be a cat.
