Nanook of the North

Christmas Eve found Chicago under a thick coat of ice. Oh, it was lovely. There were icicles hanging from every peak, branch, and leaf. It was winter perfection, straight out of a scene from Dr. Zhivago--that is unless you had to drive somewhere, which we didn't. So, we just enjoyed the beauty of a frozen world, admiring the work of Jack Frost or Suzy Snowflake or whoever else was working that day.

Hobbes continues his brave quest of chasing birdies each day, going out in rain, sleet, snow, or ice. And he loves nothing better if someone comes out with him to play in the yard. So that I did. Hobbes, me, and the camera went out to crunch around in the yard for a bit. Me crunching a bit more than he, but we crunched--a lot.

We roamed every inch of the back forty (feet, not acres), admiring a frozen this or a frozen that. The grasses offered tiny frozen raindrops, while the hydrangea blossom dripped frozen icicles off its snow-covered head. The tree looked like a giant bark-flavored Popsicle, while the lawn now resembled a skating rink. The waterfall by the pond looked sadly still, and the pond itself was heavy with ice.

Hobbes and I found wonder in the stillness and laughter in our inability to stay upright. Me from the ice, he from the sheer joy in having someone in the yard with him--he just has to roll over in the snow with glee.

There is just something about that cat that makes me laugh. He never fails to make me slow down just a bit to scratch an orange head or just watch him chase snowflakes falling from the sky. It's a good message he sends: Slow down, just a bit--there is wonder and joy in this big world. Even if it is frozen.

Pretty post about winter. There is something very serene about white that covers the ground.

That's a very lovely photo you took of Hobbes. I can see Hobbes tummy getting bigger thanks to his master over-indulge and partying too much

Hobbes really is so photogenic and looks beautiful against the white snow. I love this post... it reminds me of that feeling at the end of the movie A Christmas Story, when the kiddo looks out the window on Christmas morning to snow and icicles. Hope you're have a great holiday, Lin!

I love the silence too. When your corner of the world is covered by snow or ice it seems like it encases everything in a sound proof blanket.

I'm so amazed that Hobbes loves the snow! Maybe I'm not that schooled on kitties but I thought that they really didn't like anything wet and cold. So glad that he finds pure enjoyment (along with you) in the stillness and quiet of the snow.

It is gorgeous!!! When you're able to take more pictures, I'd love to see more of the pond and any others you'd like to show!!

Ice storms are beautiful.
It's sort of snowing here today.uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuui/":;p/

No painting today - more tomorrow. The rhythm of my life right now.

Lovely post - My kitties miss the birds and the squirrels - no squirrels here at all and birds are at a premium. I opened the windows today - temps in the 50's and they all went cat-batty with the fresh air...me too!

What a lovely contrast between the red kitty and the white snow!! My cats are content to look out the window so far...a blast of cold air as the dog comes and goes and they scurry inside to warmer digs...sissies! Driving sucks but the views are great! In fact, I JUST got plowed out from yesterday's foot and a half plus of the "white stuff." Sigh, gonna' be a long winter....

Oh, such a gorgeous pic of Hobbes in the snow...My cat, Charity, LOVES LOVES LOVES the snow. She can't wait to get out, and she meows at the patio door until I let her out. Since she is all white, I really have to look to find her among the snow! :)

Jodi--I love going out in the snow. It's just so quiet--especially now that all of the wacky neighbors are all indoors. :) That's the best part.

Vanilla7--Isn't he a dream, that kitty?! He's chubby because we all tend to pack on some fat for how cold it gets here. It has something to do with the inactivity as well. :)
Wait until spring, pally!

Margo--I have some really nice shots of Hobbes in the snow--he really stands out. I love that he braves the weather! It was just like that movie--the whole world was ice!! Soooo pretty!

Nancy--Yep! And all of the neighbors are inside. That's the best part. I love being out when it snows.

Chocolate--Oh, I got a ton of photos to show! Usually the younger kitties are willing to brave the snow. Grace is older and she gets chilled easier, so she stays in. Hobbes is in and out about a thousand times a day--he wants to go out, but forgets how cold it is! It's kind of funny. More snow and ice, coming up!

Pricilla--There is something productive about the fresh smell of paint! Such promise!Such opportunity for a new room! So clean and new! I'm secretly jealous that I am not painting. :( (Hi, Sherpa!)

Grace--I love spring when we can open the windows again. The kitties lift their little noses in the direction of the breeze, sniffing for tails of excitement outdoors! Ahhhhh, can't wait. I don't think winter and snow smells half as good as spring.

Will Oaks--Oh, the ice and snow is just lovely for photographing these days! I laughed when I saw yours, knowing I ran out with the camera too. I love how Hobbes color just pops against the white backdrop. Thanks goodness he's brave!

Hobbes is so cute out in the frozen tundra! I love the quiet and beauty that snow brings. Thanks to Hobbes for reminding us to slow down and appreciate our surroundings!

Okay, I realize I've never met Hobbes, but I think he's terrific! What a great cat! I don't know if I've ever met a cat that like to go out in the snow before.

There is much we can learn from the stripey goodness that is Hobbes.

Stop and smell the icicle, for example.

I wonder what Gus or Pru would do if I let them outside (on their leash, of course) in the snow. They'd probably think they couldn't move, flop over on their side, and lie there helplessly. Fun.

Excellent picture, and such fun. But the great part is your description of the winter wonderland and the good times.

Hobbes looks so cute out in the snow. Glad you took some time to slow down and enjoy it with him.

Of all of our cats, it's actually Cajsa Cat, the oldest black mamma-cat , that likes to go out in the snow. But she has always been an outdoorsy kind of a cat. When she was young, she used to wander off in the woods on the farm -- for days! I used to have to go out and call her name to get her to come home. Calle Cat, who looks like Hobbes twin brother, does go out even in the snow, but when it gets really cold, he has the good sense to turn around and go upstairs instead of going out.

Great photo of Hobbes!
Lovely text about the stillness of snow and ice.
Hugs,
Anna

I love crunchy snow - almost as much as I love ice that crackles when you step on it. That, of course, means I don't live in snow country. In your memories you are rarely cold.

We did the ice thing here too. It was treacherous and icky without any of the beauty. But I'm glad it didn't coat the trees, because that always damages them. Very nice pic of Hobbes.

I never knew a cat that loved the snow! That is so cool. I love how the snow crunches. We got more snow here in Indiana today.

I love this post! And not just because I have a big cat-crush on Hobbes, either... What a pretty picture you paint. :)

Today I wore a tank top outside. I did buy a sweater at the mall, which was probably a ridiculous purchase considering where I live, but one can hope, right?

our little furry loved ones have a way of making us see things in a whole different way. Great photo of Hobbes, sounds like you two had a great time.

A. Marie--Isn't that funny how some cats just love the snow?! I'll bet photos of you kitty in the snow is pretty funny--all that white!

Beaded Tail--I think Sadie reminds us to take some time too AND smile while you are doing it! Funny how smart the animals are, eh?

Lynne--This is like a Hobbes fan club here now. Ugh. He's just so photogenic, he somehow ends up in all of the photos--especially the snow ones. :)

JD--LOL! I'd love to see Gus and Pru avoiding the snow! Grace won't even get close to the door when it is this chilly.

Vanilla--It was sooo cool out there! To see everything covered in ice was just beautiful. Couldn't resist grabbing my boots and the camera. Hobbes just added the fun. :)

Stephanie--His orangey self just really stood out in the white snow. He is the silliest cat I have ever owed.

Anna--Hobbes doesn't go far or out too long, but we still keep an eye out for him. It has been too cold for him to be out too long, but today he went out long enough to lose his collar. Ugh.

Marilyn--This ice was so thick that you really sunk deep when it gave way under you. Hobbes was scared of me at first--not recognizing the noise I was making. He had to come over to sniff me to see if it was really me! Now, that's good crunchy snow, eh?

Sharky--I wondered about that. And my poor redbud is recovering from a lot of cicada damage from the year before. I hope it makes it.

Karen--I think Hobbes just likes outside in general. He's going in and out and driving us CRAZY!

Cute--Thanks, pally! I do love the winter--if only it wouldn't last so darn long. :( I love everyone here complaining about the snow and cold. I tell them it is Chicago in winter--it is cold and snowy. Why is everyone so surprised at that each year??? Weird. Enjoy the sleeveless life, pally.

Ann--I convinced the kids to go out with him later because he was just so funny out there. He was literally rolling around in the snow, happy that we were out there with him. He is very silly!

So sweet. Sounds nice.

Hobbes is joy. He can find fun and happiness wherever he goes and brings those around him along for the ride.

Casey said...

That Hobbes is a brave guy, I would have thought he'd be staying inside to avoid frozen paws. His big orange self is adorable with that snow backdrop.

Lin said...

Petula--Most adventures with Hobbes are nice. :)

Merry--Oh, how right you are. There is just something about him, he finds silly in everything. And I need about this much encouragement to laugh with him. :)

Casey--Isn't he lovely against the white snow?? No, he likes going outside, but his time out there is pretty short if nobody is out there with him. He's in and out that darn door all day long. Ugh.
